CINCINNATI, Ohio — Customs officials in Cincinnati discovered thousands of live crabs that they said someone was trying to smuggle into the country.Agriculture specialists with U.S. Customs and Border Protection discovered the invasive Chinese mitten crabs on Oct. 16 while conducting routine inspections, the agency said in a news release.The crabs are considered a seasonal delicacy in Asia, according to Customs officials. But they have had a "disastrous impact" on habitats where they've been introduced.The crabs were hidden in packages labeled as various types of clothing. They were being sent to various residences in New York. The shipments were refused entry into the U.S. Across the country, Customs agriculture specialists intercepted more than 352 pests and 4,638 quarantine materials on any given day in the fiscal year 2017, according to the agency. 877

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Two Good Samaritans say they saved a man off the ledge of the Coronado Bridge late Monday night. They said they spotted him while driving home from San Diego, and couldn't help but turn around to get him. 10News Photojournalist Zach Wonderlie talked to them about the life-saving rescue"We were driving from the San Diego area to Coronado and I noticed a kid sitting on the ledge," said Aiden Leavitt. The driver of the car, Charles Crehore, instantly sprung into action - deciding to back up on the empty bridge and help save the man's life. "I'd actually thought about this. I'd thought, 'If if I ever get in that situation, what am I gonna do?" Crehore said. "And I decided if it comes to me and I'm there...I'm stopping my car, I'm gonna get out and I'm gonna stop them."As he backed up to where the man stood on the bridge, Leavitt jumped out of the passenger side and bear-hugged the man on the bridge. "I just didn't hesitate. I just jumped out of the car and I grabbed him," Leavitt said. The man didn't fight back as Leavitt pulled him into the car, and allowed the friends to drive him to Sharp Coronado Hospital. It wasn't long before his family and police showed up to help.The men say they're grateful that they were in the right place at the right time. "I just hope that he works his way through whatever it is that he's having trouble with," Crehore said.If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of depression, the number to the San Diego Crisis Hotline is 888 - 724 - 7240. 1626

Congress has been unable to agree on a new stimulus package, and now, a key feature of the last package--the 0 enhanced unemployment benefit--has lapsed.“We definitely anticipate significant increases in the number of families and individuals that will begin to rely on emergency food programs more heavily as a result of the loss of this 0 additional benefit,” said Zanita Tisdale, who works with the Food Bank for New York City.The Food Bank for New York City has provided more than 30 million meals from March to April, just in New York. With many on unemployment losing almost two-thirds of their income now, there will be an even greater need in the city and beyond.“Our network of over 1,000 emergency food providers across 90 percent of the zip codes here in the city are really bracing themselves and making sure they are already bringing in enough resources,” Tisdale added.A study done by Feeding America shows 1 in 6 Americans could now struggle with hunger as a result of the financial hardships caused by the pandemic. That is 54 million Americans, 17 million more people since the start of the pandemic.“About 30 to 40 percent of estimated clients that are coming to food banks have never called a food bank before for help,” said Zuani Villarreal with Feeding America.“The deeper we get into this economic crisis and also taking into consideration that Congress is essentially late in passing new legislation, the more significant our economic challenges are going to be as a nation,” said Mark Hamrick, a senior economic analyst with Bankrate.com.Hamrick warns if Congress doesn’t act fast to end the lapse of enhanced benefits, not only will more people go hungry, but our economy will take a more troubling hit.“The deeper we get into this lack of action on the part of elected officials, the more it exacerbates the level of uncertainty that we have,’ said Hamrick. “I do believe, and I hope I am not overly optimistic, that both sides will come together.”Currently, the House’s idea for a second package, the HEROES Act, was passed in May. (KGTV) -- One person has been injured after a school bus crash on Coronado Wednesday afternoon, police say. According to police, the crash happened on 9th Street and Orange Avenue just after 1:30 p.m.Police say the person injured was riding on the bus which belongs to Coronado Unified School District. The district later put out a statement saying, "no significant injuries" were reported.  436

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- A family wants the FBI to get involved after their son was stabbed to death in Mexico, according to KABC.Their son was in Mexico celebrating a friend’s birthday when he was killed, and now his family believes the Mexican government is trying to cover up the murder. Taylor Meyer left for Mexico for his friend’s 30th birthday.Photos show the 27-year-old having a good time with his friend’s in Playa Del Carmen. On Friday, his parents got a call informing them their youngest son had been murdered. They first thought it was a cruel hoax, but later discovered it was real.Kris and Krista Meyer say their son was stabbed to death and that a witness told police that three people carried out the attack, taking his wallet, shoes, watch and iPhone. The couple is now searching for answers and wants the FBI to investigate.They say that Mexican authorities are trying to cover up the murder so not to scare tourists away. Sunday, 200 of Meyer’s friends gathered at Hermosa Beach for a candlelight vigil to remember the fun, loving man who brought so many of them together. 1097
