TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa police major is suing several media companies for publishing comments he made in a radio interview in June.Major Travis Yates has filed a lawsuit against Comcast, Gannett, Public Radio Tulsa, Gatehouse Media and others, saying their reports portrayed him in a "false light."During a June appearance on Talk Radio 1170 with host Pat Campbell, Yates said data shows systemic racism "doesn't exist" and "all the research says we're shooting African Americans about 24% less than we ought to be based on the crimes being committed."In the days following his comments, the Tulsa Police Department opened an investigation into Yates, and Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum called on Yates to apologize.Yates later claimed his comments were taken out of context, particularly in the headlines of some media reports. Utah officials suspended the license of a mortuary in South Salt Lake after reports of employees stealing jewelry from bodies, conducting cremations without identification and leaving bodies outside refrigerators.On Thursday, the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing released an emergency order suspending the licenses of the Carver Mortuary Service and funeral directors Tanner Carver and Shane Westmoreland.The directors "engaged in conduct which constitutes gross incompetence, gross negligence or a pattern of incompetency," the report stated.But Westmoreland dismissed the claims as being from "disgruntled" former employees."They're making all sorts of claims that are simply not true," Westmoreland told KSL. "There's never been a body here that's been treated with disrespect," he said. "There's never anything that's been stolen."After receiving a license in February 2008, the funeral home provided services for Intermountain Medical Center, Utah's Office of the Medical Examiner and Salt Lake County, according to the report.Two former employees hired at the mortuary earlier this year testified before state regulators, according to the report.Robert Price said he did not hold a license when he was hired as a removal assistant in February. His duties included removing deceased people from various locations, performing cremations and sewing together an autopsy patient.According to the order from the state licensing agency, he said he witnessed the funeral directors violating ethical cremation practices, including cremating infant remains with deceased adults at the same time.This "occurred on a regular basis" during his employment, Price told regulators.Price also reported the cremation retort was not fully emptied after use, and unidentified ashes were thrown away.Although the mortuary kept a cremation log, Price said the log was often incomplete. Cremated persons were sometimes unidentified or missing paperwork authorizing cremation, according to his testimony.Employees also separated "gold and precious metals" from human remains, selling the metals and keeping the "significant" profits, according to the order from the state licensing division.The second employee, Erin Christensen, also did not hold a license when he was hired as a removal assistant in March, according to the order. He was fired from the mortuary in August, the report noted.He testified refrigerators containing bodies was often full, and unembalmed bodies were left outside of the refrigerators for periods of a day or longer.The embalming room was also unsanitary, according to the report, and appliances and services were not cleaned regularly.Both former employees said taking jewelry, watches and rings from bodies was a common practice at the mortuary. Christensen testified he had seen employees wearing the items, the state report said.The funeral directors failed to provide records state inspectors requested from the mortuary, the report stated."The respondents have failed to comply with the ethical standards of the profession that require all deceased persons to be treated with the highest respect and dignity," the report concluded.State officials will hold a formal hearing to decide the final disciplinary action for the mortuary and its operators.Westmoreland believes the company will be vindicated."Once we do explain all these things, I'm confident that they will grant the license back," he said. 3451

Two young brothers in Peoria, Arizona, are hoping to bring smiles to COVID-19 patients by sending homemade cards to Valley hospitals.Hurshneet and Pravneet Chadha said they created "Project Smile AZ" to spread positivity. They got the idea after listening to their parents, who are both doctors, speak about COVID-19 patients going through treatment alone in hospitals."We wanted to make them feel accompanied on their journey to get better," said 15-year-old Hurshneet. "We want to make sure everyone is fine, and we want to make sure everyone is happy."When they started, they delivered 150 cards to Banner Health. The response was so great that they decided to keep going."We've had many people reach out to us to send cards to our PO box, as well as hospital CEOs have reached out to us, sending us thank you letters to our email so that made us very proud," he said.Now, they've distributed 1,200 cards to the Navajo Nation, Circle the City, a nonprofit, and several hospitals in the Valley."It helps the patients when we give it to them, and they're saying they put a smile on their faces when they receive them as well, so that's my favorite part," said 12-year-old Pravneet.Through social media, they've gotten classmates and other groups to donate cards, but they make most of them in their living room."We come up with anything that we think would inspire the patient," said Hurshneet. Two childcare workers have turned themselves into Florida police custody after a video surfaced of them berating, taunting and throwing a backpack at an 8-year-old child with autism.On Sept. 1, Winter Haven PD found out about a Snapchat video showing 26-year-old Kaderrica Smith and then 19-year-old Alexis Henderson taunting, aggravating, yelling at and tripping a student at Our Children's Academy.The 8-year-old is seen and heard in the video crying and hiding underneath a table while Henderson and Smith continue to taunt him.At one point the child tries to run towards one of the workers when she grabs his arms and sweeps his legs out from under him causing him to fall.The video lasts about three minutes and at one point shows one of the workers throwing a backpack at the child, hitting him in the face."There has to be an accountability measure for folks," said Winter Haven Police Chief Charlie Bird. "Especially when they're supposed to be the professionals. They get hired as the professionals, they're being paid as the professionals."In initial interviews, the two said they felt they were acting appropriately and did nothing wrong. Henderson and Smith just received their certification for childcare last month. "Those aren't methods that you can even begin to defend as being used to defuse a situation with an autistic child," said Bird. They were each immediately fired by the faculty and DCF placed a hold on their certifications.The child was interviewed by a DCF Child Protection Team member on Sept. 15 and it was determined the acts were criminal.Police were initially unable to locate the two, thus giving reason to issue a warrant. 1713
