SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Santee business is empowering veterans to help heal themselves and become independent with yoga.The veterans behind the program say it’s a union of mind and body that can also lead to a paycheck. The business is called Hot Yoga and it’s located in Santee.The business was opened two years ago by Marine veteran John Szczepanowski. John is a combat veteran whose service spans decades including the Persian Gulf in 1989 and later in Iraq and Afghanistan.John retired from the military in 2014 and discovered yoga a year later thanks to a friend. John dove in and became certified as a yoga instructor.The practice was something he wanted to share with others, specifically infantry men and women and Navy corpsman who serve on the front lines.10News was able to capture a day of classes in which 1o active-duty military members took part.Those in attendance had the opportunity not only to see how it feels, but to explore a skill they may use to support themselves.John says if they choose, the veterans can apply for what he is calling a “Warrior Yoga Scholarship” which will provide them with tuition if they choose to become a certified yoga instructor.For more information click here. 1229
Scientists from all over the world recently returned home after the largest Arctic expedition to date.The Polarstern, a German ice breaker, housed hundreds of scientists who spent time over the past year to do research in the Arctic.“The MOSAiC Expedition is an expedition to the central Arctic. We took a ship, an icebreaker ship, and froze it in the arctic sea ice. It stayed there and drifted with that ice for a full year and that ship served as a platform for doing all kinds of research to understand the changing Arctic sea ice and the implications that has on the arctic system and global system,” Matthew Shupe, scientist and co-coordinator of the MOSAiC Expedition, said. He is also a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder.“MOSAiC really represents the largest expedition to the arctic ever,” he said. “MOSAiC is, I would say, very photogenic. It’s really compelling and captivating to all kinds of audiences.”But the data collected and changed observed during the rip serve a larger purpose than just beautiful, picturesque nature videos and photos.“The Arctic is changing. The sea ice is changing and we knew this,” Shupe said. “But when we went there the ice was thinner than we expected.”That change impacts a number of things. Shupe said as the Arctic changes, it’s opening for business. “It’s opening for cargo transportation, it’s opening for tourism.”It’s an indicator of larger changes as well.“Can potentially affect our weather, you can imagine the large scale circulation of our globe is dependent on things like a cold North Pole versus warm tropics and that affects the large scale circulation,” he said.The data these scientists collected over the span of a year will be used for global climate and weather prediction models.“These models rely on information, we have to understand the Earth's system in order to model it,” Shupe said.Hundreds of scientists from 37 different nations, all focusing on different projects, funded in part by U.S. tax dollars.“This is funded by the national science foundation, department of energy, NOAA, NASA, these are institutions that are funding this kind of research to understand arctic change and how it affects all of us," Shupe said.Next year, you’ll be able to experience the Arctic, too.“This planetarium film is an educational documentary about the MOSAiC Expedition,” said Lianna Nixon, a filmmaker, who spent a few months aboard Polarstern. She documented the expedition for a few months to bring the Arctic to everyone. “What we wanted to do was really express what kinds of science people were doing in the field and take that into your local planetarium.”The 30-minute film will be available at planetariums as soon as next year -- a 2D version will also be available.“The Arctic impacts all of us no matter where we live. The polar regions drive a lot of our global climate systems,” Nixon said.Expeditions to the Arctic have been happening for more than 100 years, but this new data collected by MOSAiC will be used in the science community for years to come.“MOSAiC is building on this history of expeditions to the Arctic,” Shupe said. 3131

(KGTV) - A San Marcos woman is speaking out for the first time about her ,000,000 claim against San Diego County.She told 10News that two sheriff's deputies knocked on her door in the middle of the night last August for a welfare check. There was no problem and they left but she said Deputy Richard Fischer returned alone an hour later, saying he needed to use her restroom; then told her she was cute and hugged her, several times."It wasn't an okay hug. I was stunned, shocked. It was very fast and confusing."She resisted. "Yeah, I felt very vulnerable, intimidated, felt weak. I felt little. It's just a mess! Everything is a mess! This is hard to do. He shouldn't have come back to my house and I don't ... everything's a mess!"Three months later, she said she's still frightened."Would I open the door anymore? No. I think he's bad for law enforcement and bad for me. I think he's a bad guy!"Dep. Fischer was placed on administrative duties after the complaint was filed. An investigation is ongoing, now with two more women talking to investigators.Another San Marcos woman told a similar story. An Alpine woman said she was arrested on a questionable charge, handcuffed, and fondled while in restraints. 1329
SEATTLE — If you’re eating seafood in the US, there is a good chance it came through Seattle. Data from 2017 show more than 150 million pounds of seafood worth nearly 0 million came through the city on the sound. But COVID-19 is changing everything.A new study published in the Journal of Fish and Fisheries found that seafood imports, exports, and catches were all down around 40% compared to 2019. A colossal decline.“We were scared, just like everybody. Not only with the health concerns and people getting sick, and then financially we just bought the business a couple years ago from our boss and it was pretty quiet, pretty sleepy down here," said Ryan Reese, one of the owners of Pike Place Fish Market. Just like everyone else, they’ve had to adjust during the pandemic.“We’ve converted our whole operation like a little shipping factory and so we’ve really changed our focus from over the counter service to trying really hard to drive our online presence,” said Reese. Ryan says they’ve been lucky to stay busy shipping fish out to customers.“People still need to eat everyday and they’re cooking at home and luckily they think of us and we ship overnight and so we’re feeling grateful,” said Reese. What we found is it’s kind of a mixed bag with the seafood industry; some companies are adapting really well and getting their product to people and other companies are really struggling and their sales are down from 10% to 40%. “You got to have your gear in perfect condition, it’s gotta be fishing for you, that’s what makes the money,” said Cub Jansen, fishing captain. Cub is doing some maintenance work on one of his boats. He and his crew had a tough season.“The biggest thing would be the price difference. You know, we’ve been hurting on price. Typically in Alaska, we’d get paid per pound for crab, but this year, we got paid .85 per pound. There’s no casinos buying, no cruise ships, there’s limited capacity at restaurants, so it’s made for a tough market,” said Jansen.When you have no place to sell your catch, that can crush an industry.“This year has really hurt our crews and our boat owners earnings,” said Bob Alverson, the manager of the Fishing Vessels Owner’s Association. He says his members are hurting.“The earnings for our crews and the boats are off about 30 to 40%,” said Alverson.There are two huge reasons. First, seafood is mostly sold in restaurants and COVID-19 restrictions have been hard on those businesses.“The restaurant trade is where we make our living a lot and I feel sorry for the waiters and waitresses’ businesses. They have really been hit hard. And anyone who depends on selling their product through the restaurant trade has been similarly hit,” said Alverson.Second, exports to Japan and China have essentially dried up since the pandemic.“We’ve lost our overseas markets to China, which buy the vast majority of our live crab,” said Jansen.That leaves this group of hardworking people with a lot of questions.“The biggest thing with the COVID stuff is, am I going to have a market tomorrow? Am I going to be able to sell this crab or salmon that I have on the boat? Or is everything going to shutdown?” said Jansen. Those are the type of questions that make you lose sleep at night.But it’s not the first time this industry has been hit hard, and it certainly won’t be the last. Maybe you wouldn’t know by looking at them, but fisherman tend to be ocean half full type of people.“In the fish business, everybody is an optimist. Next year can always be better than this year,” said Alverson.“There’s a lot of heritage and a lot of pride. It’s a hard working community,” said Reese. “We all need each other,” said Jansen. We all need each other, a simple phrase that might apply to more than just the fishing community during this pandemic. 3813
