Carnival Cruise Line is canceling most U.S. sailings through the end of this year. It's the latest sign that the cruise industry's recovery from the coronavirus pandemic could still be many months away.Carnival says it's canceling sailings from all ports except its home ports of Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida, but it stressed that it still might not sail from those ports in November and December.Carnival's announcement came the day after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extended a ban on large cruises in U.S. waters through Oct. 31.Carnival isn't the only cruise liner canceling trips because of COVID-19 - Royal Caribbean and Norwegian also announced they are canceling cruises.Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, which operates the Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, announced that it was suspending all its cruises through Nov. 30."The Company will continue to work in tandem with global government and public health authorities and its Healthy Sail Panel expert advisors to take all necessary measures to protect its guests, crew, and the communities visited," officials said in the release. On Tuesday, Royal Caribbean Group, owners of Royal Caribbean International, Azamara, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea Cruises, said in a press release that they were extending their suspension through Nov. 30.However, they do plan to move forward with their Hong Kong cruises, which are scheduled for November, the company said in the release.Royal also added that Celebrity Cruises and Azamara had suspended their entire 2020/21 winter programs. Celebrity stopped all of its winter cruises in Australia and Asia. Azamara has also suspended its winter sailings in Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, and South America. The no-sail order, initially issued in March, was set to expire on Sept. 30. 1861

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — The last two cottages to grace San Onofre Beach and replace the deteriorated trailers near Camp Pendleton will be dedicated Thursday. The Camp Pendleton Cottage Renovation Project has worked to replace 13 of the 30-year-old FEMA trailers at the beach with manufactured homes. The new cottages are build using metal roofs, composite siding, stainless-steel appliances, and furniture. Cottages are also constructed to include wheelchair accessibility, railings, and wider hallways for service members with special needs. RELATED: World War II veteran laid to rest in MiramarService members from any branch of the armed forces can rent the cottages for short-term stays during the summer, based on service classification level for active duty members or retired personnel. While the stay may be short, the trailers that once sat on the beach didn't provide much comfort and were "corroded beyond repair and without handicap accessibility."San Diego Nice Guys, a non-profit that works to help underserved San Diegans, provided the funding for four of the 13 cottages at the beach.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Millennial veteran home purchases surging"The Nice Guys have been long-time supporters of the military and their families," Jeff Schreiber, Nice Guys president, said. "This project is another way to show that we recognize and appreciate those who have sacrificed so much for us."Back in 2015 when two beach cottages were dedicated, Bob Clelland, chairman of the Camp Pendleton Cottage Renovation Project, said the newly installed homes are integral to local military life."It’s a place that allows you to clear your head and get away from the difficulties of life, some of which might be related to military service," said Clelland. "We’ve provided for those with physical disabilities handicap-friendly kitchens, toilets and passages."I think some of the wounds that our servicemembers are coming back with are those that you can’t see. A peaceful place like this can help heal those wounds." 2041

CARLSBAD (CNS) - Attorneys for the alleged victims of a former Carlsbad military boarding school headmaster whose molestation conviction was overturned last week by a state appellate panel asked the San Diego County District Attorney's Office Wednesday to appeal the ruling or retry the case against him.Jeffrey Barton, 62, was convicted in 2017 of five felony counts of forcible oral copulation and one felony count of forcible sodomy for allegedly molesting a cadet at the Army and Navy Academy beginning in 1999, when the alleged victim was 14 years old.Barton was sentenced to 48 years in state prison.A three-justice panel from the Fourth District Court of Appeal agreed with Barton's contentions that the trial judge should not have dismissed one of the jurors during the trial and reversed the conviction on Friday.RELATED: Appeals court reverses molestation conviction for former Carlsbad boarding school headAttorney John Manly, whose firm represents four alleged victims in civil suits filed against Barton and the academy, said, "We disagree with the ruling of the court of appeal. Jeffrey Barton is a serial sexual predator who is known to have sexually molested at least six boys in horrific ways. The evidence against him is overwhelming and we ask District Attorney Stephan to appeal this decision and, if necessary, retry this case in the interest of justice and public safety."So far, two of those civil suits have been settled and two are pending.A District Attorney's Office spokeswoman said, "We have contacted the victims who testified in the case and are working to provide them support. At this time, we are exploring our appellate options, which include retrial."The convictions came in Barton's second trial. In his first trial, almost two years before, a different jury deadlocked on the charges involving the alleged victim. Two other former Army and Navy Academy students testified in the first trial that they were molested by Barton, but the defendant was acquitted on all but one of the counts involving those victims. The appellate panel ruled that Barton's second trial could have concluded differently had one juror not been excused, allegedly for refusing to deliberate with her fellow panelists. The justices wrote in their ruling that the other jurors appeared to disagree with Juror No. 12, but did not provide enough of a showing that she was actively stalling deliberations. The ruling indicates the juror did not appear to find the alleged victim credible."The trial court's error in discharging Juror No. 12 warrants reversal," the panel wrote. "She was the lone holdout juror who consistently held to her belief Barton was not guilty and, had she remained on the jury, it is reasonably probable the case would have ended in a mistrial, a more favorable result for Barton than conviction."The panel wrote that Barton was convicted "within hours" of the juror being discharged. 2921

CARLSBAD— It's the winter sport most famous for being a bit odd. Curling usually soars in popularity during the Winter Olympics, but you can also play year-round, even in sunny San Diego. Each week, members of “Curl San Diego” gather at the Icetown Skating Rink in Carlsbad to teach people curling. “It’s fascinating and something you don’t usually see, so everyone wants to try it,” said Owen McLachlan, the club’s vice president. The idea behind curling is simple. Shove a 42-pound rock as close to the center of a target as possible. In reality, it’s not so easy. “It’s usually called, ‘Chess on Ice,’” McLachlan said. Similar to bocce or shuffleboard, the team closest to the center gets the points. The sweeping heats up the ice, reducing friction and allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter.“An eighth of an inch can make or break a shot,” said Karen Coombs, who grew up playing in Canada, but now lives in San Diego. The Carlsbad club started after the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Organizers say a lot of Canadians in San Diego wanted a place to play, and when the Winter Olympics come around..“We'll have 200 people for a learn to curl,” Coombs said. A close-knit community just a stone's throw away. “Anywhere you have ice, you can have curling,” McLachlan said. For more information on Curl San Diego, click here. 1348
