PRETORIA, April 1 (Xinhua) -- China has pledged to import more value-added products from South Africa to optimize bilateral trade.Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin made this pledge on Wednesday when he delivered a key-note speech at the China-South Africa Economic and Trade Forum in Pretoria.South Africa was the last leg of Jia's 10-day African tour which has already taken him to Cameroon and Namibia. CHANGSHA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The body of an elderly man has been recovered from the debris of a landslide, bringing the death toll from rainstorms in central China's Hunan Province to 12, the Hunan flood-control and drought relief headquarters said Thursday.About 42,000 people were relocated to safe areas over the past day as the rainstorms lashed more than 280 townships in Hunan from 2 p.m. Wednesday, said a statement from the headquarters.The latest victim was a 72-year-old man who died in a rain-triggered landslide in Xupu County of Huaihua City, where four bridges collapsed and 68 roads were cut by flooding, said Zhou Shengqi, publicity officer of Xupu.  A strawberry field in Loudi, Central China's Hunan province is flooded on May 13, 2010. The rainstorms damaged 10,200 hectares of crops and destroyed 480 residential buildings in the county, Zhou said.The violent weather occurred five days after storms that killed 11 people and left two others missing in Hunan.Heavy rains were forecast to continue to pound Hunan for the next five days and neighboring Guangdong Province for the next two days, provincial meteorological authorities said Thursday.

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland will adopt new measures to facilitate cross-Strait travels, including opening more outlets to issue travel and entry permits to Taiwan travelers, a spokesman said here Wednesday.Travelers from Taiwan can get travel and entry permits upon arrival at three new air terminals in Tianjin, Ningbo and Jinan starting May 25, Yang Yi, the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman said at a press conference here.The move will increase the number of such terminals in the mainland to 23.To travel to the mainland, Taiwanese need a travel pass and an exit permit issued by the Taiwan authorities. They are also required to obtain an extra mainland travel pass and entry permit.According to Yang, public security departments in southern China's Guangdong Province have also been authorized to reissue from May 25 travel passes to those who have lost their documents or whose documents have expired.Currently, only seven provincial and municipal police departments are authorized to handle this issue.The travel pass, named "Taiwan Compatriot's Pass to the Mainland," is valid for five years and is similar to the identity card Taiwanese use in the mainland."As more and more Taiwan people come to the mainland for making investments, travels, work, study, plus living, the mainland will improve its entry and exit management system based on the needs of Taiwanese people," Yang said.He also confirmed the mainland's and Taiwan's air service associations would soon hold a meeting to discuss other matters, including adding more direct cross-Strait flights.

YUSHU, Qinghai, April 24 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in northwest China's Qinghai Province on April 14 has climbed to 2,192, the rescue headquarters said late Friday.As of 5 p.m. Friday, 78 people were still missing, the headquarters said.Qinghai has received more than 722 million yuan (105.7 million U.S. dollars) in donation as of Friday, according to the provincial department of civil affairs.This includes 328 million yuan in cash and 394 million yuan worth of supplies, the department said.It said 1,363 tonnes of food, 87,476 boxes of bottled water, 27,842 tents and 130,876 quilts have been delivered to the quake-hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.A television charity show broadcast nationwide by China Central Television Tuesday evening alone raised 2.175 billion yuan (320 million U.S. dollars) to help quake victims of last week's earthquake.
