EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - In a vigil of hope held Friday night, at least 60 people shared their homes that an El Cajon teen who is reported missing in Phoenix would soon be found. Nineteen-year-old Kiera Bergman grew up in El Cajon and went to Valhalla High School, her aunt, Mindy Tarantino told 10News. The teen moved to Phoenix earlier this year with her boyfriend. Bergman's roommate reported her missing Monday when she didn’t return home and had not shown up to work.“We were told she left her house without her purse, without her car, why would she do that,” Tarantino said. “This isn't in her character. She doesn't stop communicating with people.”Kiera’s mother and sister are in Phoenix waiting for any word from the police. Meantime, her family and friends in El Cajon lit candles and prayed for her safe return.“We haven’t slept in this whole week. It’s just horrible,” Tarantino told the crowd, reminding them to stay optimistic. “Somebody is going to crack and lead us to her.” 1014

(KGTV) -- Some parents are upset after a document from the Cajon Valley Union School District was accidentally shared.Cajon Valley Union School District Superintendent David Miyashiro said an employee’s notes taken during a weekend planning summit -- which included the teachers union, school board members, and district management -- were inadvertently released.Under one of the sections in the notes is language describing parents as “stay at home mom, do not want to teach their kids,” as well as references to some parents being “right-wing” and “not all believe this is real and believe it will be finished by August.”Several parents obtained the document and were upset with how they were described. Demanding answers, some parents showed up at a closed-door district meeting on Tuesday evening where reopening plans were being discussed.Miyashiro sent 10News this statement on the matter: “I've both apologized to the parent community on our behalf and also addressed this with the employee. They weren't meant for public view but there's no excuse ... we don't speak about anyone that way.”Parents who spoke to 10News about the notes said they want something to come out of this situation, whether it’s training or education for staff members."The trust has been lost; the trust between parents and the school district. Trust between parents and superintendent, trust between parents and the board, I think. That's the feeling I get,” one parent said.The district, made up of 16 elementary schools and five middles schools, serves over 17,000 students in various communities in and around El Cajon. 1631
EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- One person was taken to the hospital after an El Cajon home where a man was beaten to death with a pan in late 2018 was set on fire Thursday night. According to authorities, the fire started on the 1200 block of Naranca Avenue just after 7 p.m. Nine people were displaced by the fire. Heartland Fire says the flames were contained to one bedroom. Fire officials said the injuries were minor.The fire broke out in the same independent living home where a man was beaten to death with a frying pan in late 2018. Representatives from state and local agencies, county works, insurance, the DMV, and more are all present at the resource event, ready to help with the next steps.“Usually it’s, 'where do I start?' EL CAJON (CNS) - A man was struck and killed by an SUV as he crossed a street in El Cajon, police said today.The man, believed to be 50 to 60 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. Stephen Kirk of the El Cajon Police Department said.The motorist is cooperating with police and investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor, Kirk said. Police said the man was crossing Jamacha Road at the intersection with Granite Hills Drive at 10:15 p.m. Saturday and was struck by a 38-year-old El Cajon woman driving a 2019 Bentley SUV north on Granite.At the time of the collision, the man was walking outside the crosswalk, police said.The crash remains under investigation and Jamacha Road is expected to be closed in both directions between Granite Hills Drive and Washington Avenue until at least 4 a.m.The El Cajon Police Department is asking anyone with information to call 619- 579-3311. 914
