NEW YORK (AP) — Century 21 Stores, a destination for bargain hunters looking for fat deals on designer dresses and shoes for nearly 60 years, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The retail chain says it’s winding down its business, including all 13 stores across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida.Century 21 joins more than two dozen retailers who have filed for bankruptcy since the pandemic which forced non-essential stores to temporarily close.Century 21 said that the decision followed nonpayment by the company’s insurance providers of about 5 million due under policies put in place to protect against losses stemming from business interruption. That insurance money helped it rebuild its downtown Manhattan flagship store after it was damaged by the 9/11 attacks. 794
NEW YORK (KGTV/AP) -- Macy's is hiring more temporary workers to handle online orders for the holiday shopping season.Macy's says it will hire 18,000 workers to fulfill online orders and other tasks at warehouses devoted to e-commerce operations. That's an increase of 3,000 from a year ago. Overall, Macy's temporary hiring is expected at 80,000, down from 83,000 a year ago.The overall decline contrasts with rival Target Corp., which announced earlier this week that it was hiring 100,000 people to work at its stores, an increase of 40 percent from a year ago. The retailer also plans to hire 4,500 workers to help pack and ship online orders at its warehouses. 678

NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Bill de Blaiso suggested that the snow day as we know it may be gone due to remote learning, as the city prepares for what could be it's biggest snow storm in years. The mayor announced that all schools, including in-person learning, would be open Wednesday. The mayor cited expectations that the storm will not begin to hit New York City until 4 p.m. School buses will also be in use. "School will be in session Wednesday," de Blasio said. "We do not expect the snow to even begin until school is complete tomorrow." On Thursday, there will be classes one way or the other. While the decision has not yet been made on in-person learning, all students will have the option of remote learning for Thursday regardless of how much snow the area gets.De Blasio suggested parents have an alternative ready for Thursday. "We're going to be assessing the storm as it arrives, we will be making a decision as we get more information." De Blasio suggested they may have the information they need to make a decision by 6 p.m. Wednesday. The city is under a winter storm watch for late Wednesday into Thursday. New technology could be the way guns are made, and you can use it right in your own home.Starting this week, Americans can start legally downloading instructions on how to use a 3D printer to make their own gun. The guns cannot be traced and there’s no background check required.“This is building a gun in your home by pressing a button, says David Chipman, a former ATF Special Agent and an advisor to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. “That’s an entirely different thing from past technologies.” Chipman says he worries about the future and 3D guns getting in the wrong hands.“Although the threat might not be immediate, next month, five…10 years, it could really change the landscape on how criminals and terrorists get guns,” Chipman says. But the NRA points out there are laws that prevent violent criminals from even having a gun. 869
NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge in New York has ruled that Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf assumed his position unlawfully. U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis's ruling invalidates Wolf’s suspension of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which shields young people from deportation. Wolf effectively suspended the program in July, a month after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against President Donald Trump's efforts to end it. Garaufis wrote Saturday that DHS failed to follow an order of succession established when then-Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned in April 2019. DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ruling. 696
