SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County Fire is offering some residents key safe boxes that allow first responders to gain access to homes in emergency situations, County News Center reports.The boxes, called KnoxBoxes, are installed on or near the front door and can only be opened by local firefighters responding to life-threatening emergencies, the county says.County Supervisor Dianne Jacob says the program fulfills an urgent need.“For older folks with chronic health conditions or in need of help with basic activities, KnoxBoxes can be a lifesaver,” said Jacob. “These devices can also provide some peace of mind in a region where wildfire is a year-round threat.”County Fire received a federal grant to help purchase 200 boxes. The county plans to loan the boxes to residents in rural communities.So far, the county says it has received 70 applications. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is among 25 counties throughout the nation at risk for a measles outbreak, according to a new report. According to the University of Texas, a paper published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases warns that the epidemic will worsen. The analysis considered a county’s volume of international travel from foreign countries as well as non-medical exemptions for children. Cook County, Illinois, Los Angeles County, Miami-Dade County and Queens County, New York are among the most at-risk areas for an outbreak in the US, the report says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are investigating Monday a woman's report that she was held against her will in Rancho Pe?asquitos.A woman arrived at a home on Caminito Cuadro at 10:45 a.m. and said she had been kidnapped and held captive in a neighboring house, police said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County’s District Attorney Monday warned of price gouging amid the coronavirus. During a declared state of emergency, it’s illegal for a business to increase prices for essential goods or services by more than 10 percent. The only exception is if businesses can prove their own costs have increased. On March 4, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency throughout California. "We're going to go out when we get citizen complaints and provide them notice and explain to them what the law is," said Damon Mosler, Chief of the Economic Crimes Division for the DA's office. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents in Hillcrest are worried homeless encampments will start more fires in the area.Back in March, a canyon underneath the Vermont Street Bridge went up in flames. Fire crews say it was started from an encampment. Marina Macklin knows that problem all too well. "You're very afraid of the fires," said Macklin. "Because they move really quickly out there because it's so dry." MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodNearly two months later, debris from the Vermont Street Bridge remains in the canyon. "They cleaned it up? No." said Macklin. "It's all still there, it's all laying down there."According to the University Heights Community Association, the canyon west of the bridge is owned by Caltrans. The east side is city property. Councilman Christopher Ward's office says they've been working to clean it. "If they say they're cleaning it up they're taking their time," said Macklin. "Why?" She says cleaning it won't solve the problem. "They go down there, set up their camps, somebody starts a fire, and they leave for a while," said Macklin."The city might go down there and do a little bit of stuff and then as soon as it's all clear and they feel safe the homeless go back in there again."Councilman Ward's office said they've already added more security guards to the Hillcrest Market area. "Security guards up here don’t do anything for the canyon," said Macklin. "I don’t even think they're supposed to go there. Is the city gonna hire security guards to go down into the canyon? I don’t think so." 1668
