BERLIN (AP) — German pharma giant Bayer says it’s paying up to .9 billion to settle a lawsuit over subsidiary Monsanto’s weedkiller Roundup.Monsanto has faced numerous lawsuits over claims it causes cancer.In a statement Wednesday, Bayer said it was also paying up .22 billion to settle two further cases, one involving PCB in water.The Leverkusen, Germany-based company said the Roundup settlement would “bring closure to approximately 75%” of the current 125,000 filed and unfiled claims.The company said the settlement also puts a mechanism in place to resolve potential future claims efficiently.It said the agreement is subject to approval by Judge Vince Chhabria of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.“First and foremost, the Roundup settlement is the right action at the right time for Bayer to bring a long period of uncertainty to an end,” said Werner Baumann, Chief Executive Officer of Bayer. “It resolves most current claims and puts in place a clear mechanism to manage risks of potential future litigation. It is financially reasonable when viewed against the significant financial risks of continued, multi-year litigation and the related impacts to our reputation and to our business. The decision to resolve the Roundup litigation enables us to focus fully on the critical supply of healthcare and food. It will also return the conversation about the safety and utility of glyphosate-based herbicides to the scientific and regulatory arena and to the full body of science.” 1532

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has criticized grocery store chain Wegmans and several other chains for allegedly selling coconut milk made from fruit harvested by abused monkeys.According to PETA, monkeys are "forced to climb trees to pick coconuts" for coconut milk made by the brand Chaokoh. The company says that Wegmans is one of the few grocery store chains still selling the product.In an open letter to Wegmans CEO Colleen Wegman, PETA claimed that an investigation by the organization found that coconut growers in the industry were harvesting fruit with monkeys that were "confined for life, sometimes with their teeth removed, always on chains, and often driven insane from being deprived of everything that's natural and important to them."PETA also added that it is delivering "humanely obtained: coconuts to Wegmans this week.In response, Wegmans said that PETA had sent letters to several other retailers regarding the coconut milk, and added that the store is "actively investigating the matter."In July, the Thailand-based maker of Chaokoh coconut milk, Theppadungporn Coconut Co. Ltd, told Reuters that it had audited more than 100 of its coconut plantations by a third party and that none were found to use monkeys in the harvesting process.Theppadungporn added that following PETA's reports of forced monkey labor, sales fell between 20% to 30% from last year.According to Reuters, PETA has rejected the Thai government's claims that the use of monkeys in harvesting coconuts was almost "non-existent."See the letter from PETA President Ingrid E. Boston officials announced on Thursday that Yawkey Way, the street outside of Fenway Park honoring former Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, will change names after claims that Yawkey was racist. Yawkey owned the Red Sox for nearly four decades, from 1933 to 1976. As desegregation was coming to an end in baseball in the late 1940s and 50s, Yawkey's Red Sox was the last MLB team to integrate. It was not until 1959, 12 years after Jackie Robinson made his for MLB at bat, that Pumpsie Green became the first black Red Sox player. Despite Yawkey's refusal to employ black players, he was a popular figure in Boston. In 1977, part of a street outside of Fenway Park became Yawkey Way. The street will be once again be called Jersey Street, the Boston Globe reported. "We recognize we have a long way to go, but remain committed to building a spirit of diversity, inclusivity, and openness within our front office and our ballpark," the Red Sox said in a statement. "We look forward to working with the business and civic leaders of Boston to continue to bring about social change in our community."While Boston's public works committee unanimously agreed to the name change, not everyone was in favor of dishonoring Yawkey. Representatives from Yawkey's foundation remained opposed to the name change. “As we have said throughout this process, the effort to expunge Tom Yawkey’s name has been based on a false narrative about his life and his historic 43-year ownership of the Red Sox,” the Foundations said in a statement to the Boston Globe. “The drastic step of renaming the street, now officially sanctioned by the City of Boston... will unfortunately give lasting credence to that narrative and unfairly tarnish his name, despite his unparalleled record of transforming the Red Sox and Fenway Park and supporting the city he loved through his philanthropy.” 1911
