WASHINGTON, D.C. – It will be even longer until Americans can travel aboard cruise ships. A group of the nation’s top cruise lines have agreed to suspend their U.S. operations even further.Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announced Wednesday that its ocean-going cruise line members will suspend their U.S. operations until at least Oct. 31, 2020.The association, made up of companies like Carnival and Norwegian cruise lines, had previously suspended U.S. operations until Sept. 15. The CDC’s no-sail order lasts through Sept. 30.The association said it was a hard decision to further suspend operations, but it must be done to protect the public from the devastating effects of COVID-19.“This is a difficult decision as we recognize the crushing impact that this pandemic has had on our community and every other industry,” said CLIA in a statement. “However, we believe this proactive action further demonstrates the cruise industry’s commitment to public health and willingness to voluntarily suspend operations in the interest of public health and safety, as has occurred twice prior.”CLIA says its cruise line members will continue to monitor the situation with the understanding that they will revisit a possible further extension on or before 30 September 2020.“At the same time, should conditions in the U.S. change and it becomes possible to consider short, modified sailings, we would consider an earlier restart,” wrote CLIA.CLIA says its most recent economic impact study indicated the U.S. supports nearly half a million American jobs and generates billion annually in economic activity throughout the country. Weeks ago, it was thought that the US was on its way to reopening the economy with the coronavirus no longer posing the threat to the nation it once did.And then increases of testing have shown in recent weeks the virus is not only more prevalent than previously thought, but is spreading at a faster rate.Last Friday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the states bars to close. Fellow Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida made a similar announcement, prohibiting on-site alcohol consumption at bars.Come Monday, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey also closed bars in his state. The sudden reversal came out of necessity as all three states are concerned that hospitals could be overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients.So what makes bars uniquely dangerous?Bars are largely places meant for extended social interaction. That has led to several recent outbreaks of the virus.For instance, there were at least 100 reported cases tied to an outbreak in the Tigerland nightlife district in Louisiana. A group of 16 friends all tested positive for the virus after a visit to a bar, according to local reports."It seems like the largest growing sector of cases in the United States seems to be in the 18 to 40 year old range," Zach Jenkins, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Cedarville University. "Bars also seem to be a common source that infections are springing from. In my estimation, what we're seeing is the direct result of lockdowns easing up. Bars were physically closed throughout the country, people had minimal to no access to alcohol, and many people canceled their vacation plans. "Bars are often social experiences by nature, and younger crowds are more likely to frequent them. When alcohol consumption is added to the mix, people are less likely to keep their distance or practice other behaviors that limit the spread of the virus. Another layer to consider is that many bars lack outdoor seating in larger cities may have limited outdoor seating. Add all of that together, and you start to see why bars seem to be such a hot spot for activity."The CDC still encourages people to remain six feet apart and wear masks in public settings, which could be a challenge consuming alcohol while in a crowded bar.The CDC has released guidelines for the public to decide on whether it's safe to visit places such as bars and restaurants. Those guidelines can be viewed here.In DeSantis’ opinion, people were not following guidelines.“So folks just follow the guidelines, we're in good shape,” DeSantis said. “If you depart from that, then it becomes problematic. So I think that that's been clear from the beginning. Remember, the beginning of May, we went to this, you didn't see any problems. WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington’s National Zoo says panda matriarch Mei Xiang has given birth and is caring for her newborn attentively.The National Zoo said the birth happened at 6:35 p.m. ET on Friday.Watch the zoo’s panda-cam. Mei Xiang has had three previous cubs. All were eventually transported to China under an agreement with the Chinese government. Mei Xiang has been spending most of her time in a small den indoors, where she has created a nest out of branches. In an Instagram post Friday afternoon, the zoo says, "Mei Xiang has become increasingly restless and started body licking — both signs that labor has probably started!”Mei, at 22, would be the oldest giant panda to successfully give birth in the United States. WATCH LIVE:LAKE HUGHES (CNS) - A fast-moving brush fire quickly scorched about 10,000 acres in the Lake Hughes area Wednesday, burning what appeared to be homes and prompting a multi-agency effort and mandatory evacuations for at least 100 homes.The Lake Fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to Marvin Lim of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which was battling the blaze with Angeles National Forest crews, as well as assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica fire departments.The fire west of Palmdale had a "rapid rate of spread," amid temperatures in the mid-90s, low humidity and gusty winds, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The forest service and county fire departments quickly called in second-alarm responses.By 4:30 p.m., the flames had burned 400 acres, and officials said the fire had the potential to burn 1,000 acres, according the Los Angeles County Fire Department. That quickly changed two hours later, when the flames exploded across an estimated 10,000 acres, with no containment.The fire was entirely on federal land as of 6:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.The sheriff's department issued mandatory evacuation orders affecting at least 100 homes, and an evacuation center was set up for displaced residents at Highland High School in Palmdale.By 7:15 p.m., the flames had jumped Pine Canyon Road, two miles west of Lake Hughes Road, and shortly after, flames were seen on aerial footage burning what appeared to be homes in the area.ABC7 reported at 7:20 p.m. that homes had started to burn in the fire. 1698
