SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SeaWorld San Diego announced Friday that it reached a milestone in the construction of its ``dive'' roller coaster by installing the ride's highest section of track 153 feet above ground. The ``topping-out'' ceremony included a crane placing an American flag at the ride's highest section. The ride, slated to open next summer, is being built adjacent to the Journey to Atlantis attraction, on what had previously been a parking lot. Construction on the ride, advertised as the tallest, fastest and longest such coaster in the state, began in August. The park originally announced the ride in January with the name ``Mako'' after the endangered shark species, which is considered the fastest shark in the world. Park officials announced its new name, Emperor, last month, saying it would reflect the ability of emperor penguins to dive to depths of 1,800 feet in the waters of their native Antarctica. After the 153-foot climb, Emperor will plunge back down 143 feet while reaching speeds of more than 60 mph, according to SeaWorld. The ride will include nearly 2,500 feet of track, ``floorless'' cars that will hold 18 riders in three six-person rows and penguin conservation and awareness elements through a partnership with Penguins International. The ride is being built by Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers. The company has built four other roller coasters for SeaWorld since 1997, one in San Antonio and the other three at SeaWorld Orlando. 1518

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Ride hailing company Lyft announced a partnership with San Diego's Fashion Valley today to establish dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones at the mall. The partnership creates six official Lyft Zones that will make it easier for drivers to find riders in areas of the shopping center that are less congested, company officials said. Using the zones will also give riders access to special discounts, according to Lyft.``Transportation can be a challenge when it comes to shopping at busy malls,'' Lyft San Diego Market Manager Hao Meng said. ``The introduction of Lyft Zones at Fashion Valley Mall will offer shoppers a seamless door-to-door solution that enhances their overall ridesharing experience.''The six Lyft Zones around the mall are adjacent to Verizon Wireless, the Nordstrom eBar, So Sushi, JC Penney, the AMC Fashion Valley 18 theater and Forever 21. The company is encouraging the use of the new Lyft Zones by offering 20% off two rides to or from the shopping center through June 8 when riders use the code ``LyftFVLaunch.''``Ridesharing is in great demand, and we're excited to offer this convenience to locals and tourists who want to visit our popular shopping center,'' said Fashion Valley Marketing Director Arianne Cousin. 1267

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The county's E. coli outbreak involving children who attended the San Diego County Fair and did not wash their hands after visiting the animal exhibits stands Friday at 11 confirmed or probable cases, one of which was fatal, health officials said.County health officials have tracked E. coli cases related to the fair since June 28, when the Health and Human Service Agency announced that it had received reports of four confirmed or probable cases of the bacteria. The fair shuttered its animal exhibits the same day, after 2-year-old Jedidiah Cabezuela's death was reported, and the fair closed for the year on July 4.RELATED: Health officials report 2 new probable E. coli cases possibly tied to San Diego County Fair animalsAs of Wednesday, the number had increased to 10 confirmed cases and one probable case, all of which involve children ranging in age from 2 to 13. The county did not disclose the age or gender of the four new cases confirmed this week, but said all of the patients visited the fair's animal exhibits and petting zoos.People can avoid contracting the bacteria by thoroughly washing their hands after making contact with animals at places like farms, petting zoos and fair exhibits. Young children, older adults and people with weak immune systems are at particular risk, according to health officials. The HHSA and the California Department of Food and Agriculture collected environmental samples at the fair after the first cases were reported to confirm the bacteria's origin. However, results of the collected samples were not available prior to the fair's closure and have yet to be disclosed.County health officials repeatedly cautioned that more confirmed cases were likely despite the fair's closing due to local doctors intentionally looking for symptoms of the bacteria and its multi-day incubation period. As such, the county has not indicated that the cases are part of a larger, countywide outbreak linked to common causes like contaminated produce. While most people who contract the E. coli bacteria do not develop severe complications, roughly 5 to 10% of those who do can develop a potentially life-threatening kidney infection. Symptoms do not appear for three to four days after contraction and can include severe abdominal cramps, watery or bloody diarrhea and vomiting.Residents should promptly contact their doctor if they believe they have contracted E. coli, according to the county. 2455

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved spending million in federal pandemic-related funding to help child care providers, testing in schools and meals for senior citizens. The board directed million to child care providers, who have been struggling to stay afloat since March, in the form of grants. The county will also spend .8 million on senior food programs -- including an expanded Great Plates program that involves prepared meals delivered to the elderly -- while also supporting participating restaurants. The board voted to spend million to support the county Department of Public Health's testing, tracing and treatment strategy dedicated for kindergarten through 12th-grade schools.Last month, the board directed the county's chief administrative officer to make recommendations on how to spend the money. To implement the child care grants, CAO Helen Robbins-Meyer will negotiate agreements with The San Diego Foundation, the YMCA of San Diego County and Child Development Associates, Inc.Supervisor Jim Desmond said while he has been critical of Great Plates program, based on the costs per meal, he understands it helps restaurants while also helping shut-in seniors who may not have any social interaction otherwise.Desmond added that if there's money left over from the program or school testing, it should go towards area food banks. In related actions following an update on county COVID-19 prevention efforts, the board approved Desmond's motion for a waiver to the school- closures mandate. The board also approved a separate motion allowing county enforcement of businesses -- in terms of complying with reopening requirements -- based on Phase 2 mandates. 1741
