We're now entering peak back-to-school shopping season, but this is turning out to be a school shopping season like none ever before. In the year of the pandemic, many parents are holding off, unsure their children will even set foot in their schools this fall.In normal years, Target, Staples and other stores would be running big back-to-school campaigns by now. Stores would be stocked with gym shoes, white shirts, notebooks, and Clorox wipes. (Remember Clorox wipes? Have you seen any for sale in four months?)But these are not normal times. With many schools already planning for online learning this September, there's no need to buy lots of new school clothing or even backpacks.Other schools are holding off announcing any plans, which means teachers cannot come up with lists of required items yet.Why shopping could still be strongIt turns out learning at home may actually boost sales figures this year, according to the National Retail Federation. It says parents will be buying more laptop PCs and iPads then ever before. With many students learning at home even just part time, demand is soaring for new laptops to improve the Zoom call experience. The result is that the retail group predicts shopping could be 3-5% higher than last year, with more parents than ever dropping 0 to ,000 on a computer. Two kids? Double it.But from the doesn't that stink file, the bad news is for brick-and-mortar retailers. The Retail Federation says online sales will soar this school year, as families avoid going to the mall.About 45% of shoppers say they plan to do more online shopping this year than they did a year ago, which was already a strong year for online sales. That means if you like to browse the mall for school shopping, you'll find fewer stores open and much less merchandise on those store shelves when you get there.Shoppers report many shoe stores have just half their normal amount of merchandise on display. As a result, this shopping season is unlikely to rescue malls already deep in financial trouble. No more hands-on testing Macs and iPadsNeed a trip to the Apple store? 30% of them are closed, as Apple recloses stores in areas in the growing red zones.Meantime, many of the open ones won't let you play with the displays anymore, or do a hands-on test of MacBooks on the big open tables. You will need to ask an associate for help in those stores. CLICK HERE to find out if your store is open. One bright spot in all of this: If stores find school clothing and merchandise not moving well by the middle of August, expect huge markdowns later in the month, so you don't waste your money.____________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. Well this is guacward. A new trend has people using avocado's in the place of jewelry boxes as they propose. The internet went wild with the advent of avocado toast and other health trends using the popular fruit, but many millennials are taking it to the next level. A simple search turns up a wealth of Instagram posts and YouTube videos where people use the produce in the place of a traditional ring box. For those looking to take the trend to the next level, Custom Avocados will even print a special design on an avocado for that special someone. RELATED: East County man confronts avocado thief | Are millennials really wasting their money on avocados? | Trio arrested for 0K avocado theft in Oxnard 757

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is allowing a class-action lawsuit to proceed from minor league baseball players who allege they are being paid less than minimum wage. The justices offered no comment Monday in rejecting Major League Baseball's appeal. The case of Senne v. Royals was first filed in 2014 on behalf of former minor league player Aaron Senne, ESPN reported and has now expanded to include minor league players in Arizona, California, and Florida. In the lawsuit, the players claim most earned less than ,500 annually in violation of several laws.According to USA Today, if minor leaguers had played ball this season, they would have earned between 0-0 per week played.Minor League Baseball canceled its season due to the coronavirus pandemic.A judge had initially allowed only the California players to sue, but the federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled in favor of the players from Arizona and Florida. 941

WAUWATOSA, Wis. — A 3-year-old in Wisconsin can see for the first time thanks to a new procedure.  McKinley Sovey is the youngest person to undergo this type of gene therapy. Her parents Parker and Julie Sovey have been watching her progress."There was that moment when she did look at me for the first time," said Julie. "I was like I think this is working. I can't even really explain it.  She's 3 years old and she looks at mom for the first time. It was a really really cool moment and it was the moment I was waiting for."McKinley was born practically blind. The most she could see was the contrast of light. When she was a year and a half, doctors discovered she inherited a retinal disease.  "Six months after that FDA approval, and then less than a year after that she's having the procedure, so it's been like rapid fire," Parker said. Dr. Stephen Russell works in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa Hospital. He performed both of McKinley's eye surgeries with the gene therapy earlier this month.  "Complicated drug because it has multiple parts to the drug and complicated surgery because to make sure we delivered the drug to the appropriate tissues," said Russell.Russell said he is basically forcing DNA into the right cell."We had to do a surgery just to put the solution in the appropriate spot, which is in the area underneath the retina," he said. "At that point, it's just fingers crossed that this gene ends up in the spot that it's supposed to," said Julie. The Soveys knew there were risks and potential complications.  "It's terrifying," said Russell. They were hoping the therapy would at least help McKinley maintain the little vision she had. After the first eye surgery, mom and dad didn't notice a difference. But it was shortly after the second surgery they knew it worked. Parker said she was moving with a purpose."She walked into the kitchen, pulled a chair out, stood up on the chair and actively feeling like the toaster and the coffee maker like she knew those were there and she wanted to get up and be able to feel them," he said.McKinley's depth perception is also changing."Being able to see things further away has been really neat and it's also been kind of scary because I feel like I'm having to re-childproof the house for a 3-year-old," said Julie."She use to feel around for whatever it was she was eating," Parker said. "Then she'd put her hands in it to see what it was and then she'd put the spoon in it, and then usually it was dumped by the time it got to her face."McKinley will still likely be visually impaired, but her parents said any progress is a bonus."She may no longer need to be a braille reader," Julie said. "I don't know if she'll need to use a cane to navigate."They said their daughter is becoming more confident and her personality is even changing."This is kind of part of medical history," said Julie.McKinley has some checkups scheduled, but doctors hope she won't need another surgery. 3071

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump committed to a second stimulus package Monday in a wide-ranging interview with The E.W. Scripps Company. When asked by Washington Correspondent Joe St. George if he plans on getting Americans a second stimulus check, the president said yes."We will be doing another stimulus package, it will be very good, very generous," President Trump said. When asked how much money people will receive with the next stimulus bill, Trump said, "You'll find out about it."Trump said his administration will probably announce the next package over the next couple of weeks. He added that he thinks the legislation will be bipartisan. 666
