SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Legislation was announced Thursday to raise the purchasing age of long guns such as rifles and shotguns from 18 to 21 in California.The legislation was introduced by Assemblymember Rob Bonta, a Democrat from Oakland.Assembly Bill 3 would mirror existing laws for purchasing handguns which state that a person must be at least 21-years-old to purchase a handgun.“California already wisely mandates that someone be at least 21 years of age to purchase a handgun,” said Assemblymember Bonta. “It’s time to extend that common-sense law to long guns in order to enhance public safety.”"We must take every reasonable measure to protect Californians from gun violence," said Assemblymember David Chiu (D-San Francisco), Joint Author of the bill.According to a 2015 report by the FBI, adults 18 to 20 represent four percent of the population but commit 17 percent of gun homicides.“Californians under age 21 can’t purchase alcohol, tobacco and other health hazardous items,” said Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), Principal Co-Author of AB 3. ”So why should they be able to buy guns? (AP) — California and 16 other states have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its plans to scrap gas mileage standards and how much greenhouse gases vehicles can emit, Gov. Jerry Brown and Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced Tuesday.The suit takes aim at a plan by the Environmental Protection Agency to eliminate standards for vehicles manufactured between 2022 and 2025. The standards would have required vehicles to get 36 miles per gallon (58 kilometers per gallon) by 2025, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) over the existing standard.EPA administrator Scott Pruitt says the standards are not appropriate and need revision. (AP) — Advocates looking for California to secede from the United States can begin collecting signatures for a longshot initiative asking voters to weigh in, Secretary of State Alex Padilla said Monday.The proposed initiative is the third so-called Calexit proposal since President Donald Trump's election. Previous efforts were withdrawn or failed to gather the required signatures.The latest would ask voters about secession in 2020. (AP) — The chair of the California Democratic Party took a leave of absence Monday amid an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against him.Eric Bauman's leave will last until an outside investigation ends, party spokesman Mike Roth said."Chair Bauman believes this decision is the best way to ensure the independence and integrity of the process," Roth said in a statement. "The Party is confident that the procedures in place will allow for all parties to come forward freely and provide for a thorough and complete review."A party vice chair accused Bauman last week of sexually harassing and assaulting several unnamed people at party functions and called for Bauman's resignation. Others including California U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna and the Orange County Young Democrats called for Bauman to step aside.Daraka Larimore-Hall, the vice chair, spoke to two accusers and a witness, the Sacramento Bee newspaper reported.Bauman announced an outside investigation on Saturday."I take seriously any allegation brought forward by anyone who believes they have been caused pain," Bauman said in a statement. "I look forward to putting these allegations behind us and moving forward as unified Democrats."The party's executive board could vote to remove Bauman from office. (KGTV) -- One of the California Highway Patrol officers wounded during a shootout in Riverside Monday evening died and two others remain hospitalized Tuesday, according to the CHP.According to Riverside authorities, the shooting happened around 5:35 p.m. on the 215 Freeway near Box Springs Boulevard and Eastridge Avenue.
