CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A South Bay teen was recently published in The New York Times, sharing a very personal account of what distance learning is like for him during the pandemic. Isaac Lozano is a senior at Bonita Vista High School, a school in the Sweetwater Union High School District. Lozano praises the district for starting the school year virtually because of COVID-19. Lozano told ABC 10News that sharing his reality wasn’t easy, but he now feels proud that he can be a voice for other students like him.The op-ed titled “Remote Learning Is Hard. Losing Family Members is Worse" was published on Aug. 13.In the article Lozano, a straight-A student, details his struggles with distance learning at home. He lives in a two-bedroom apartment, shares a room with his two brothers, and both parents are essential workers. Lozano also lives in the South Bay, one of the areas most impacted by COVID-19 in San Diego County.Lozano writes about not having a designated place to study, moving from room to room in his family’s apartment. He also highlights internet connectivity issues, but insists he has concerns about going back to school before it is safe to do so.Lozano gets personal in the article, sharing that COVID-19 hits close to home. His uncle died of the virus.Since the article was published, Lozano says he’s heard from people offering to help. He’s also heard from a publishing company, a literary magazine and even received an internship offer from a congressional candidate.Lozano will be applying to colleges in the fall and is interested in applying to Stanford, Yale, and UCLA. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team [FCMAT] is in place to review financial decisions in the Sweetwater Union High School District amid a severe budget shortfall. Michael Fine of FCMAT said Tuesday his team is investigating the district’s spending. The team is currently reviewing documents and will be in the county later this month to interview personnel within the district, Fine said.The Sweetwater Union High School District is about million in debt for the 2018-2019 school year due to fiscal mismanagement. District officials previously said the shortage was due to expenses from staff raises, including costs of substitute teachers and an unexpected million expense for utilities. RELATED: Financial failures rouse growing concerns in Sweetwater Union High School District board meeting School board members took steps to remedy the crisis, including an early retirement plan for more than 300 staff members, along with administrative layoffs. In early March, the board approved a Fiscal Stabilization Plan in a 5-0 vote, saying it would shave some million from the current school year’s budget shortfall. In December, the San Diego County Office of Education appointed a financial advisor with the power to stay and rescind any financial decisions made by district officials. 1343

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several Chula Vista elementary schools are working to give students hands-on engineering experience the district says they can take into the job market. On August 1, 2016, a new type of learning burst into being with the start of the Innovation and Energy Station in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. The station helps teach students STEM. The station serves sixth grade students as well as serving as a community lab. In 2018, the lab grew again to include the Energy Station at Saburo Muraoka Elementary School. In August of this year, the program grew yet again to include the Hydro Station, which teaches students about the water industry. The lab begins by helping students identify which careers align with their interests while highlighting jobs in San Diego’s priority sectors. “It was designed to give students the opportunity to learn about their own strengths," Michael Bruder, District engineering teacher told 10News. “The students’ eyes light up when they see the lab space. You get the ‘Wow’ effect. You literally hear the students say ‘Wow!’ as they enter,” Bruder continued. At the Energy Station, students use Minecraft to create an energy efficient home and/or landscape. Students exploring other themes could be testing wind turbines or building circuits. The program also offers students a connection with local employers, giving them the chance to connect their hands-on experience and the region’s in-demand skills. Qualcomm, Microsoft, SDG&E, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association all partner with the program. “I want employers to realize that career education must start before high school,” says Matthew Tessier, assistant superintendent of innovation and instruction at CVESD. “We’d love to partner with more people and expand to every single priority sector.”Click here to learn more about the program. 1950

(KGTV) — Police are searching for an 81-year-old man who was last seen in the Otay Ranch Mall area.Chula Vista Police says Donald Mooring was last seen around 3 p.m. near the Otay Ranch Mall on Thursday. Police add that Mooring may be suffering from the effects of dementia.Mooring is described as a black man, 5-foot 9-inches tall, and weighing about 230 pounds. He may be driving a white 2010 Dodge Caravan with California plates "7CHU230".He is believed to be wearing a green plaid shirt, khaki pants, and black tennis shoes.Anyone with information on Mooring's whereabouts is asked to call CVPD at 619-691-5151. 643
