PETERSBURG, Florida — Back in 2016, a dog owner received a note saying, "Shut your dog up or we will."Days later, Annabelle, a three-year-old brindle pitbull terrier mix, nearly died from kidney failure.The owner says the kidney failure was caused by wet dog food laced with Acetaminophen, known best as Tylenol, which is extremely toxic to dogs. Rob McCahan says he believes the contaminated food was tossed into his yard from the alley behind his home on 44th Avenue North in St. Pete.The dog found and ate the contaminated food before the owner realized there was a bag there at all.It happened again in March 2018, and this time, Annabelle died."She was the most lovable dog in the world," says McCahan, whose cell phone is filled with photos of his beloved dog, who he rescued from a local shelter.She died after several days in the animal hospital."These people are sick. I'm just kind of confused right now. Trying to figure out who did it," adds McCahan.The second poisoning coincided with a second note left on his door that read in part: "Shut him up. Your neighbors are tired of it."McCahan says Annabelle didn't bark too much and certainly didn't bark any more than his neighbors' dogs.Just a few houses down from McCahan's, on the 700 block of 44th Avenue NE in the North East Park community of St. Pete, another dog apparently died in the exact same manner.A brown bag with poisoned food was thrown into another yard, killing an otherwise perfectly-healthy 8-year-old golden retriever, according to the pet's owner.This pet owner shared her devastating experience on social media online with her neighbors, saying their dog died this past Monday, and wanted to warn others that someone was doing this."I'm afraid for animals," she writes, adding, "My family was devastated and are still recovering. Please be aware. We're upgrading security."St. Pete Police were out in the neighborhood again Friday trying to confirm this second report of a dog's death, but have not yet been able to.Another neighbor on the same 700 block of 44th Avenue NE tells ABC Action News that his cat was found hanged about 8 months ago.  A woman who lives on nearby 43rd Avenue NE tells St. Pete Police that she has received similarly-threatening letters recently, but her pets are doing okay. A police officer who has reviewed all the letters says it's in the same handwriting.Several residents declined to speak to ABC Action News on camera out of fear that their pets would be targeted as well if they were seen speaking about their concerns.The FBI says on their website that violence against animals is a major indicator of future violence against other animals, and future violence against people, including kids.Note: We are not publishing the name of the second dog owner because we have not been able to get in touch with them yet. 2868

Some nonprofits are trying not to lose sight of their mission during these times.Last year, social justice music echoed off the walls of classrooms. It was part of the work done by Motivate and Encourage Music Appreciation (MeMa Music), an arts-integrated social justice education group that aims to empower youth in underserved communities to use their voices to advocate for social justice and change. They help build students’ understanding of how artists have crafted messages of social change that encouraged speaking out.But the founder, Jeanne Warsaw, has run into an artist block this year with the pandemic. Although virtual learning has become more commonplace, it’s not that easy for the arts.“It’s very difficult, especially for the arts non-profit that specifically teaches instruments or sculpture or paintings,” Warsaw said. “It’s hard to transfer to remote learning.”Warsaw says many school districts aren’t hiring groups like theirs because they’re focused on implementing their curriculum. MeMa is not the only non-profit impacted.The Arts Education Partnership is a network of more than 100 organizations dedicated to advancing arts education. PETERSBURG, Fla. – An NFL wide receiver has been charged in connection with an alleged scheme to file “fraudulent loan applications” to get COVID-19 relief money from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).Joshua Bellamy, 31, is facing federal charges for wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud. According to the U.S. Justice Department, the former Bears receiver conspired with others to get millions of dollars in Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, which he then spent on luxury items.The DOJ said in a press release that Bellamy applied for an received a PPP loan of more than .24 million for his company, Drip Entertainment LLC. Bellamy then allegedly spent more than 4,000 in luxury goods from Dior, Gucci and retail jewelers “using proceeds of his PPP loan,” DOJ said in a press release.Bellamy is also accused of spending more than ,000 in PPP loan proceeds at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and withdrew more than 2,000, the DOJ alleges.Bellamy is a native of St. Petersburg, Florida and played collegiately at Louisville. Though he went undrafted, he eventually caught on with the Chicago Bears and started 57 games for the team between 2014 and 2018. He spent last season with the New York Jets, and his season ended early after he injured his shoulder. Some of the things you buy on eBay or Amazon could be going up in price, but President Donald Trump argues it will be better for American business.President Trump plans to withdraw from an old postal agreement that has allowed Chinese companies to ship small packages to the United States at a discounted price, often cheaper than what it costs for Americans to send things.“Products coming in from China, for instance, can come all the way from Shanghai to L.A. and have to pay a lower cost than if you or I wanted to ship a product across the street,” says Linda Dempsey, the VP of international economic affairs at the National Association of Manufacturers.The National Association of Manufacturers says the move will only impact smaller items, say for example, yoga pants on eBay. This particular example only costs a dollar, plus there’s no charge for shipping, although they’re coming from China. But, while you might not pay for shipping on this particular order, you’re paying for it in other ways you might not know about.“We might not see it in that package, say of yoga pants that's being shipped, but we're paying the subsidy through taxpayer dollars,” explains Dempsey. “We're paying for it as consumers when we go to the postal service and send a small package. We're paying higher rates for that because the postal service is being forced to subsidize these foreign shippers into the United States.”Critics also argue the cheaper rates hurt American businesses, and the president's proposal could help keep or create jobs in the United States.“It gives manufactures a fair chance at competing in the U.S. systems,” says Dempsey.While prices might go up for some products, there could be an upside for consumers.“We'll see how much those packages go up in terms of the foreign packages coming in,” Dempsey says. “We'll also be looking to see if the package prices for U.S. shipments will be going down.” 1925
