SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Less than a week after fully reopening its schools, the Vista Unified School District reported a second COVID-19 case involving a Mission Vista High School student, leading to the quarantine of about 150 students and four teachers.According to the district, the second student tested positive for the illness on Sunday. That student attended school Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week and is not connected to the other case in a student confirmed last week, the district said."The parents notified us that the student likely contracted the virus while traveling on a club athletic team not affiliated with school," a district statement reads. "We immediately notified all parents, students and staff who may have come into contact with the student."While it is unlikely the student came into close contact with all 150 students and four teachers, the district said it was "proceeding with an abundance of caution" and placing all of them on a 14-day quarantine and pivot to Zoom and Canvas distance-learning classes.According to the district's COVID-19 safety dashboard, it has recorded five cases since Sept. 8, and just one since Oct. 20.The Vista Unified School District, fully reopened its 28 schools last Tuesday, eschewing some of the more cautious measures some other districts are taking, moving into its Phase 3 reopening plan. The "Vista Classic" plan allows every school in the district to reopen at full capacity. Parents and guardians will still be able to keep students in "Vista Virtual," the district's distance-learning program, if they so choose."Our health and safety measures were working well, with mask wearing and handwashing particularly strong on all campuses," Vista Superintendent Matt Doyle said after visiting campuses Tuesday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Friday identified a man and his mother who died in a murder-suicide in Borrego Springs.Deputies responding to a request for a welfare check Wednesday morning found the bodies of Corey Sides, 43, and Ann Sides, 71, at their home in the 2900 block of Double O Road.Investigators determined that Corey Sides shot Ann Sides before turning the gun on himself, according to sheriff's officials.A neighbor reported she hadn't seen the mother or her son since last Friday, Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A robbery at a Tierrasanta credit union branch led to one arrest, police said Friday.A man entered a Navy Federal Credit Union branch in the 10600 block of Tierrasanta Boulevard at 1:26 p.m. and presented the teller with a demand note, San Diego Police Officer Sarah Foster said.The teller complied with the suspect's demands and gave him an undetermined amount of money.Officers headed to the scene and, after a search, were able to find and detain the suspect, a 57-year-old man, on Porto Court in a nearby residential neighborhood, according to San Diego Police Sgt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A power outage left nearly 3,200 homes and businesses without electrical service Thursday morning in Del Dios, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos and San Pasqual.The blackout, which initially affected 3,173 utility customers, began shortly before 6:30 a.m., according to San Diego Gas & Electric. By midday, repair crews had restored electrical service to all but 209 of the affected addresses, SDG&E advised. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A United Airlines flight scheduled to take off from San Diego International Airport was diverted from the runway just before departure Friday due to an undisclosed mechanical issue with one of the plane's engines.Flight 478 was scheduled to take off for Denver shortly before noon, but was recalled while on the airport's taxiway. The plane was safely escorted back to the airport's terminal and the issue occurred at low speed, according to United.``The aircraft safely returned to the gate and customers deplaned normally,'' a United spokesperson said in a statement. ``We are making arrangements to get our customers to their final destination as soon as possible.''Roughly 120 passengers were aboard the flight.
