SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It is officially Wildfire Preparedness Week in California and federal, state, and local agencies are working together to ensure a safe wildfire season.California’s wet winter created overgrown vegetation across the state, including in San Diego, and once that starts drying up and dying, things could get dangerous. The message is clear: California wildfires have changed and the public needs to adapt.“Our firefighters have been preparing non-stop for the inevitable fires that will happen this year. However, preparation involved all levels of the community, from first responders to the general public,” said Chief Thom Porter, Cal Fire Director.RELATED: Team 10: A closer look at San Diego brush clearance citationsPorter said the public must prepare. Homeowners should create defensible space around their property and families should always have go bags and an evacuation plan prepared.Cal Fire’s Ready for Wildfire app is free to download and offers preparation tools year-round. Homeowners can find checklists on the app and create evacuation plans as well. San Diego County is also preparing. At a news conference Friday, Supervisor Dianne Jacob said the county is taking extra steps to protect homes here locally.“Working with Cal Fire, the county is preparing to launch a grant program to encourage existing homeowners in high risk areas to install safer walls, vents, and other fire resistant materials to their homes,” said Jacob.RELATED: It's wildfire season! Here's how to prepare for the worst2018's West Fire in San Diego County destroyed many homes and displaced families. Other fires in California killed dozens of people and leveled entire neighborhoods.“The last couple of years have been really challenging and last year in particular way too many people being killed by wildfire and injured,” said Porter. “We need to be ready, we need to be set, and we need to go."Wildfire Preparedness Week gives California residents a chance to reduce the number of wildfires by increasing public preparedness and safety through education. 2075

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Just in time for the Fourth of July, the Mission Beach Plunge pool is reopening to the public. The iconic pool was one of the original attractions when the amusement park opened in 1925. However, it had run into hard times in recent years and has been closed for much of the last decade. One management company went bankrupt. The next came up with a renovation plan, only to discover dangerous, corroding conditions inside, leading to the pool's closure in 2014.Thanks to a partnership between the City of San Diego, Fit Athletic, and Pacifica Enterprises, the renovated pool is almost unrecognizable. "This is absolutely special, incredible," said Dr. McQuary, a longtime San Diego resident who is active in the community."What I remember about the Plunge was the issues and concerns about how we can swim and still be safe. When things would fall from the sky, it wasn't rain; it was the plaster from the ceiling!"The Plunge at Fit features floor to wall glass ceilings and a retractable roof. It also incorporates some of the building's original features, replicating the tiling and original archways.Part of the new Fit Athletic Mission Beach gym, the facility also offers beach views throughout. "It's been part of the San Diego landscape and part of the lifestyle for all those years," said Terry Curren, who moved to Mission Beach in 1937.The Plunge will officially open to the public on July 4; day passes start at a day, and there are also membership options available. 1511

The park will host special "Lego Movie" festivities from Feb. 16 - 17 and 23 - 24 around the park ahead of the attraction's opening. The park's resort is also getting a special zone geared toward toddlers modeled after Duplo. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lime can still operate its dockless scooters and bikes in San Diego, after the city's petition to revoke the company's permit was denied.Tuesday, a hearing officer reportedly refused the city's petition to revoke Lime's Shared Mobility Device (SMD) permit. The city argued that Lime violated municipal code on several occasions.“Lime is pleased with today’s decision and we appreciate the hearing officer for recognizing our compliance in San Diego. As San Diego’s longest serving operator, we value our partnership with the City and look forward to continuing to serve the community," Lime said in a statement.RELATED: City Council committee OKs changes to dockless scooter, bike lawIn August, Lime was made aware of the city's intent to revoke their SMD permit after they said the company failed to address speeding violations within the city's geofenced areas. A letter to Lime from the city's Development Services Department claimed the company had violated San Diego Municipal Code on July 13, July 14, and Aug 1.Dockless scooters and bikes are required to have a 8 mph speed restriction in high-traffic areas areas like Spanish landing and near Petco park, and as low as 3 mph along the Embarcadero and the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade."The Mayor has made it abundantly clear that operators who don’t follow rules meant to protect public safety could lose their permit and no longer do business in San Diego anymore. That’s exactly what is being done in this case," a statement from the city said.Lime argued that they were in fact in compliance, adding at the time "it is unfortunate they have chosen to move forward with this hearing" and offering to demonstrate their compliance to the city in a letter from Lime to Mayor Kevin Faulconer. After approving an initial package of rules in April, the city council is set to consider adding new regulations on dockless scooters and bicycles, including:A rider curfew from midnight to 5 a.m.;Usage of one device per government ID;A fine structure and punitive actions for companies that violate regulations;Eliminating the original ordinance's provision that allows for temporary fleet spikes during large events;Authorizing the city to reduce a company's fleet size if it poses a public safety hazard;Authorizing the city to suspend a company outright for multiple violations; andRequiring the eventual use of geofencing technology to keep riders from traversing the city's sidewalks. 2468
