More children have been diagnosed with acute flaccid myelitis, the polio-like paralyzing illness, according to numbers released Monday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.There have now been 106 confirmed cases of AFM in 29 states this year, according to the CDC, an increase of 16 since last week.There are also 167 possible cases of the illness, an increase of five from the previous week.Since 2014, there have been 430 confirmed cases of the rare disease, and 90% have been children, according to the CDC.AFM is a rare illness that affects the nervous system, especially the gray matter in the spinal cord, and causes muscle weakness and sudden onset of paralysis. There's a spectrum of how children can be affected: Some regain the use of their paralyzed limbs, while others are paralyzed from the neck down and can breathe only with the help of a ventilator.There is no cure and no vaccine.There is also no known cause. Although several neurologists who serve as advisers to the CDC say they feel sure that an enterovirus -- the same family of viruses that cause polio -- is most likely to blame, the CDC says it's still casting a net wide.The CDC's Dr. Nancy Messonnier said last week that the agency is considering the possibility that an infectious pathogen is causing AFM but added that "we're broadening our hypotheses."When asked whether a toxin or vaccines could be triggering AFM, Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immuniziation and Respiratory Diseases, replied that "we're not ruling anything out at this point."About three to 10 days before becoming paralyzed, nearly all children who developed AFM experienced a viral illness with symptoms such as fever and cough, the CDC reported last week.Viral illnesses are very common among children, and so it's not clear why only a relatively small number develop AFM. Even within the same family, several siblings can develop the same cold-like symptoms but only one becomes paralyzed.In a CNN story last month, several of the CDC's medical consultants and parents of sick children criticized the agency for being too slow to respond to the outbreak.Messonnier said last week that the agency had funded state health departments to increase physician awareness in identifying cases, increased its network of neurologists to assist with and confirm cases, and established an AFM task force of national experts.CDC spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund also said last week that the agency had assigned 14 officers from the Epidemic Intelligence Service -- known as "disease detectives" -- to help review reports of AFM cases."As a mom myself, I can certainly understand why parents are worried. More members of the migrant caravan walked through the streets of Tijuana Tuesday morning, this time heading to the U.S. Consulate instead of the border.The group reached their destination at around 11 a.m. after a nearly two-hour trek. The migrants, who had police escorts, made it clear their intentions were peaceful.The group members held various banners as they marched, including one that read: “You got it wrong, Trump. We asked for jobs and you responded with weapons. That is not polite. If asking for work is troublesome, then I am totally confused. La Caravana.”A source said the migrants dropped off a petition asking the consulate to allow everyone in the caravan entry into the U.S. The migrants requested a response within 72 hours.Additionally, the migrants said they want the U.S. government to provide ,000 for their trips back to their respective home countries if they aren't allowed asylum in the United States.After delivering the petition, the migrants returned to their shelters.It is unknown what the migrants plan to do if they do not receive a response within 72 hours.The migrants’ journey to the U.S. Consulate came as President Trump reinforced his desire to build a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.The president, during a Tuesday meeting in the Oval Office with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, said he was not afraid to shut down the federal governmentif billion in funding for border security was not approved.“I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck. More than 20 fire departments are working to burn down a Beaver Dam, Wisconsin apartment building where a deadly explosion happened last week. City officials said dangerous chemicals inside of the structure made it too dangerous for residents to re-enter, and that burning the building to the ground is the safest way to prevent any injuries."We have carefully reviewed this, and we firmly believe this is the action that needs to be taken, unfortunately," said Beaver Dam Fire Chief Alan Mannel at a Wednesday evening news conference. The five, neighboring buildings in the apartment complex were evacuated ahead of Thursday's controlled burn. Streets in the area were shut down at 9 a.m.Around 10 o'clock, firefighters lit both ends of the apartment building at 109 Knaup Dr. on fire and allowed it to burn towards the middle. Large shipping containers were placed around building 109 to help contain the heat and flames. Mannel said staffing of the fire trucks surrounding the building is minimal, and that firefighters only plan to step in and control the flames if they threatened any of the nearby structures. Police on Wednesday identified 28-year old Benjamin Morrow as the man killed in last Monday's blast. According to authorities, Morrow lived in one of the units.Beaver Dam Police Chief John Kreuziger said investigators continue to suspect that Morrow was building a bomb inside of the apartment. According to his obituary, Morrow worked in the quality department at Richelieu Foods in Beaver Dam for almost a year. His obituary describes him as "a hard worker" who "had a good rapport with all those around him."Police and the FBI continue to investigate why Morrow was in possession of the volatile chemicals that required them to eventually burn the building down.Kreuziger on Wednesday declined to comment on what the chemicals inside of the apartment were. City officials said the plan is for evacuated residents to be allowed back into their homes this evening. That's also when they plan to re-open nearby streets. The EPA has placed air monitoring devices in the area. Mannel said the EPA can also test the air in individual apartments within the evacuation zone at the request of residents. 2336

Wednesday also marked another day where reported coronavirus cases climbed above 200,000.The US is now averaging well above 2,000 coronavirus deaths per day, an average that has doubled in the last month. As of late Wednesday, more than 289,000 Americans have died since March from the coronavirus.Hospitalizations are also sharply rising. According to the COVID Tracking Project, there are currently more than 106,000 coronavirus-related hospitalizations. The COVID Tracking Project reported an increase of 2,098 active hospitalizations on Wednesday.With so many active hospitalizations, workers have been trying to make space to accommodate the surge of patients. In Nevada, workers have been treating patients in the hospital’s parking garage.Dr. Jacob Keeperman, who works in a Reno, Nevada, hospital’s ER, tweeted a photo which went viral, but also drew attention from the president, who claimed was fake.“I was sad and devastated and was angry,” Keeperman said in an interview with CNN. 1266

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Muncie area hospitals are on the lookout for a woman accused of pretending to be pregnant to gain access to labor and delivery floors.Ball Memorial Hospital reported they are working with police and have alerted all personnel to be on the lookout for the woman.It is unclear at this time if there is any surveillance video of the woman and the hospital would not say whether they have identified her.Ball Memorial Hospital released the following statement Thursday:“While no related criminal activity has taken place or charges have been filed, hospital police, leadership and team members remain vigilant. The safety and the very best care of patients and guests are always the highest priority.”Community Health North Hospital, which delivers the most babies in Indiana, said it’s critical to run regular drills to make sure no one has access to newborns that shouldn’t.“As soon as a baby is delivered we put identification on a baby which does include a security tag,” said Jamie Phillippe, Director of NICU/PICU/Pediatrics at Community Health North. “Here down in delivery they could have anywhere from 70 to 80 moms and babies.”Phillippe said the maternity and newborn ICU units are locked down at all times and no one that isn’t supposed to be down there gets in but when situations like this arise they make sure to share the information with all staff members so everyone is aware and they pay constant attention to video feeds around the building.  1501
