The U.S. Department of Justice is at polling locations in 19 states to ensure federal voting rights laws are being followed. There are also thousands of people with civil rights and voting advocacy groups watching the polls. One place they're concerned about voter suppression is Dodge City, Kansas.Jose Vargas, Marilyn Horsch and Rita Schweitz all traveled to Dodge City to help voters.  "We were really angry and thought maybe there’s something we can do to help," says Schweitz, who flew in from Denver, CO.  They’re all here because they’re angry that the town’s polling place was moved, without much notice. They are calling it voter suppression.“Designed to frustrate the voter, to make people give up,” says Horsch.For years, the town’s polling place was right in the middle of Dodge City. But this year, the county election officer, citing construction projects, decided to move to a different location that is four miles away. The new location is outside city limits, and there’s no access to sidewalks and it’s cut off from public transportation.The ACLU sued Dodge City, asking a judge to force the county to open a second polling location for the town's 27,000 residents. A judge denied the request, so the ACLU emailed election officer Debbie Cox, asking for help publicizing a voter help line.The Wichita Eagle reported that Cox then sent that on to the Secretary of State's office, adding “LOL” to the email.So, volunteers like Jose Vargas, Marilyn Horsch and Rita Schweitz are offering bus rides from the old location to the new one to ensure voters get to the poll. They rented a bus to shuttle voters to ensure they’d be able to cast their votes. 1682

The Trump administration plans to eliminate routine audits of lenders for violations of the Military Lending Act, according to internal agency documents, The New York Times reported on Friday.Mick Mulvaney, the interim director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, plans to terminate the supervisory examinations of lenders, arguing proactive oversight is not laid out in the legislation, according to the report.The proposal to weaken oversight under the Military Lending Act, which was created to protect military service members and their families from financial fraud, predatory loans and credit card gouging, came as a surprise to advocates of military families, the report stated. Those advocates have pressed the government to put a stop to unethical lenders.The agency has been critical in fighting lender misconduct, rolling out mortgage and payday-lender rules and cracking down on bad behavior by penalizing Citigroup, Wells Fargo and many other lenders.In lieu of conducting examinations, the agency will rely on complaints from its websites, hotlines, the military and people who believe they are victims of fraud, the Times reported.President Donald Trump has tapped Kathleen Kraninger to succeed Mulvaney as chief of the consumer watchdog agency. Kraninger, who works under Mulvaney, is expected to face a tough Senate confirmation battle.Under Mulvaney, the bureau has undergone major changes opposed by both Democrats and consumer advocates. In June, Mulvaney effectively terminated a board of advocates who advised the agency about fair lending and underserved communities. The advisers were told on a conference call that the board would not meet until new members were appointed. The CFPB, however, insisted nobody had been fired.The government watchdog agency, which is charged with consumer protection in the financial sector, was created after the financial crisis with the passage of the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act. 1948

The restaurant industry has been reshaped in the past six months. We’ve seen more pivots to take-out and outdoor dining, but could we see a more drastic shift.New data from Bank of America shows sales at independent chains are still down about 15%."Right now, it is just sad. People are exhausting their personal savings. They are shutting their businesses and they just don’t know what to do,” said Andrew Rigie.Rigie is with the New York City Hospitality Alliance. In NYC alone, at least 1,289 restaurants have closed since March, according to the Office of New York Comptroller. Across the country, Yelp has gathered data from its platform that show that number is around 16,000.“It’s a really dire situation,” added Rigie.The situation is the direst for independent restaurants, because the same Bank of America study that showed sales still down 15% at mom and pop restaurants, shows chain restaurant sales are now up 2% higher than they were pre-pandemic.Industry experts believe a continuing trend of these numbers could reshape the industry.Chains restaurants are now in a better position to replace space occupied by folded restaurants or struggling ones, potentially shifting the flavor of the restaurant industry toward chain food.“I’m not knocking or saying there is anything bad about a chain, but we really want our beloved mom and pop businesses,” said Rigie. "We really need support from the federal, state and local governments to ensure these places are able to recover.”Legislation was presented to Congress in June, the Restaurants Act, to help struggling independent restaurants with grant money. However, there has been no vote on the bill or any signs it could pass.Without additional help, the latest estimate by the Independent Restaurant Coalition is that upwards of 85% of independent restaurants could fold by the end of the pandemic. 1870

The romaine lettuce outbreak has many consumers thinking about where their crops are grown.One rooftop greenhouse company in Chicago says their lettuce is safer and longer-lasting.Jenn Frymark, the chief agriculture officer and manager of Gotham Greens, pulls out a head of lettuce and immediately starts to eat it."No, you don't need to wash it,” Frymark says. “We don't have that on our package, but there's no reason for me to wash it. I never wash any of our lettuce at home. It's amazing; nothing touches it; it’s so clean.”Here at Gotham Greens, lettuce is grown differently.  They do it hydroponically. That means it’s grown without soil, but in a nutrient-rich water. Instead of a traditional farm field, this lettuce is grown on rooftop greenhouses.Their space on Chicago's south side is the largest rooftop greenhouse in the country.  Because of the controlled environment, crops can grow in a third of the time of a traditional field.“We're giving this plant everything it wants: the right day temp, the right night temp, the nutrients, CO2 levels, air circulation, the water,” Frymark explains. “I mean, these are very coddled plants and they have everything they need, and they can just grow in this perfect environment and reach maturity very quickly.”Gotham Greens sells to grocery stores in the Chicago and New York metro areas, as well as select Whole Foods stores. The product goes from the greenhouse directly to grocery shelves in a day and a half.The company’s lettuce also lasts longer than the traditional grocery lettuce out here. Frymark says their product can last up to two to three weeks in the fridge. Additionally, Gotham Greens prices are comparable to other organic produce.Frymark also says their method dramatically lowers the risk for foodborne illness.“There [are] no manures, there’s no water sources that could be contaminants,” she says. “We don't have birds and animals getting into the field.”She says the company is expanding and plans to open more rooftop greenhouses in the near future. 2053

The Trump administration is planning to expand an operation that would send federal law enforcement agents to Detroit, Cleveland and Milwaukee in the coming weeks, the White House announced Wednesday night.According to a recap of the day's events on the White House website, President Donald Trump and the Department of Justice plan to expand the program into the three Midwestern cities in the next three weeks.Trump and Attorney General William Barr announced Wednesday that they would send federal agents to Chicago and Albuquerque to combat rising crime under the "law and order" push.“In recent weeks there has been a radical movement to defund, dismantle and dissolve our police department,” Trump said Wednesday at a White House event, blaming the movement for “a shocking explosion of shootings, killings, murders and heinous crimes of violence.”“This bloodshed must end,” he said. “This bloodshed will end.”Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Police Chief James Craig and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer spoke out earlier this week after Trump said they were looking into the plan to bring agents to Detroit."There could be no possible justification for such an action. The Detroit Police Department has had the support of the Detroit community in making sure our City did not have a single store looted or a single fire started during the protests," Duggan and Craig said in a joint statement. "Unlike nearly every other major city in the country, the Detroit Police Department never requested assistance from the National Guard - we handled our issues as a community. We definitely have no need for any federal presence being sent in now.""It is deeply disturbing that President Trump is once again choosing to spread hateful rhetoric and attempting to suppress the voices of those he doesn't agree with," Whitmer said. If he did, he would know that for nearly two months now, Detroiters have gathered to peacefully protest the systemic racism and discrimination that Black Americans face every day. There is no reason for the president to send federal troops into a city where people are demanding change peacefully and respectfully."Federal officers are already in Portland, Oregon and have clashed with protesters over the previous few days."Portland is a very different place than Chicago, but Chicago should be calling us, and so should Philadelphia and Detroit and others to go in and really help them," he said. "Because when you're losing many people a weekend... you see the same numbers as I do. When you're losing these people they should call us and they should say come on in.
