VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Students at Rancho Minerva Middle School in Vista are sending love to a city still grieving after a mass shooting. Jessica Ward, a 6th and 8th-grade teacher at Minerva, was inspired to act after seeing a Facebook post:"Hello. We are teachers in El Paso. We would like to know if anyone is interested in sending us postcards to help our students know there is plenty of good in our world. As teachers, we may only be able to say so much. We think concrete messages of support would help us calm some fears. Any thoughts?"Ward and her more than 160 students got to work, creating letters filled with love, support, funny jokes, and positivity. "I just hope this small little gesture will bring happiness and positivity to their lives," said Ward. Ward also showed the students news clips of the tragedy, answering questions about what happened less than a month ago. "It's just something I like to be open about, so they understand that it's important to talk about. It's not something that should be silenced, it's something that everyone should be aware of, and part of the fight is talking about it," said Ward. VISTA (CNS) - A man who detained two juveniles and took their skateboards in Vista while posing as a sheriff's deputy pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of felony false imprisonment and in a separate case admitted calling in a false report of a bomb threat.Abraham Joseph Nava, 24, will receive credit for jail time served and be placed on three years probation when he is formally sentenced Aug. 27.Nava was arrested June 14, days after the sheriff's department was contacted about a suspect claiming to be an undercover deputy and launched an investigation.During interviews with several employees from businesses in the Main Street area of Vista, investigators learned that the suspect had passed out fake business cards and was interacting with juveniles, said sheriff's Sgt. Jason Scroggins.Investigators also learned that two juveniles were detained by the suspect and had their skateboards taken, he said.After identifying Nava as the suspect, investigators got a warrant to search his home and discovered several pieces of San Diego County Sheriff's Department-specific uniform items, including badges, Scroggins said.A box of fraudulent sheriff's department business cards were also found, according to the sergeant. On June 26, prosecutors charged Nava with calling in a false report of a bomb threat. 1323

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A Fallbrook woman was convicted of negligence for killing a father of four off of Highway 395 near the Pala Mesa Resort in 2017.Sulem Garcia was on prescription medications when she veered off the road crashing into Paul Burke who was on his bicycle, blocks from his home on May 23, 2017. Garcia's lawyer argued she was exhausted from finishing her finals at Palomar College that day and had been on the prescription medications to treat depression for three years.  Garcia received the maximum sentence which was one year behind bars.RELATED: Bicyclist killed, 19-year-old driver arrested in North CountyMore than 60 of Burke's family members and friends were in the courtroom. Burke's wife Laura gave a victim impact statement saying she does not believe that Garcia is remorseful and that the sentencing was a slap on the wrist.  Burke owned and operated a custom surf shop for more than 40 years. He also worked at Costco.Burke's daughter and son both spoke at the sentencing hearing.   1051

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The San Diego Sheriff's Department is reviewing the actions of several deputies after a witness posted a controversial video on Facebook.The video shows two deputies walking a man in handcuffs just before they slam his head into a fence. Later in the video, they can be seen smacking another man in the head who is already down on the ground in handcuffs.The woman who shared the video on Facebook claims they deputies used excessive force and wants justice for the two men. A Sheriff's spokesman says the video was taken on Monday morning when deputies were responding to a domestic violence call at a Vista apartment complex.When deputies arrived the suspect was wielding a weapon and holding someone against their will, the spokesman said. During the arrest, other parties fought with the deputies. The spokesperson says the department is reviewing the body camera footage and the cell phone video.10News visited the scene of the arrests. VISTA (CNS) - A 24-year-old man was behind bars today for reportedly crashing his car into a freeway work zone in the far northern reaches of San Diego County while drunk, injuring himself along with two construction crew members.Ross Rodgers, 24, was headed south on Interstate 15 near Mission Road in the unincorporated Rainbow community about 10:50 p.m.Sunday when his 2008 Toyota Prius veered over traffic cones and entered the closure area, where it hit the back end of a stationary 2008 Ford F-250, according to the California Highway Patrol.A worker behind the wheel of the pickup truck and a second one on foot nearby suffered apparently minor injuries in the wreck.Medics took the two men, ages 30 and 36, to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido for evaluations, CHP Officer Kevin Smale said. Rodgers was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and transported to the same hospital for treatment of a broken bone in his right foot.Upon his release from medical care, the San Diego resident was booked into the county jail in Vista on suspicion of felony DUI.The crash led to intermittent closures of parts of the freeway in the area until about 5 a.m., Smale said. 1186
