CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former employee of the Sweetwater Union High School District pleaded guilty Wednesday to an embezzlement charge for siphoning more than ,000 from the district.Danya Margarita Williams, 42 of Chula Vista, is scheduled to be sentenced June 13 in a Chula Vista courtroom. Another embezzlement count, as well as a grand theft count, are expected to be dismissed as part of the plea deal.As part of her job, Williams was responsible for processing money orders received for fingerprint background investigations at the district, which are required during employment screenings, according to Chula Vista police Capt. Phil Collum. Each background investigation costs between to per applicant, and the applicants pay the fee using money orders, he said.``Instead of processing the money in accordance with district requirements, Williams deposited the money into her personal bank account,'' Collum said.District officials discovered the embezzlement -- which occurred between June 2016 and December 2017 -- and reported it to police, he said. Williams was arrested and charged in March. 1119

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Tuesday is transformation day at the Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista. The open-air center converts to a bustling farmers market, playing host to dozens of vendors. 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt spent an afternoon with a welcoming group of local artisans, whose love of food, culture and community shines through. As you walk through the market, your senses are hit with amazing aromas and live music. On this day, the sound of live guitar followed visitors throughout. See complete coverage of Life in Chula VistaThe variety of food vendors is enough to send your taste buds into a frenzy. Kimberly sampled Kenyan cuisine, devouring melt in your mouth chicken. She also stopped by a sushi stand, making savory rice bowls with tempura shrimp. Next was South Bay Salsas, a beautiful blend of fresh, seasonal Mexican/American fusion. “Every week, it's a little different. Mangoes are fresh, sometimes a little more ripe. You take it like it is”, says South Bay Salsas owner Scott Strickland. Strickland and his wife have grown their booming Chula Vista business by adding to their seasonal selections. New to the farmers market this day was Frida’s street tacos. Owner Robert Ayala tried for 3 years to get a stand at the farmers market. Ayala says his first day was a great success. “Serving our people, our community, with our tacos," Ayala said. The love each of these vendors brings to their cooking comes through in every bite. It wouldn’t be a farmers market without farm to table produce. Remberto Cepera owns a produce stand, selling fresh fruit grown on his land. On this day, he has fresh picked prickly pears.“We picked these yesterday," Cepera said. The devotion to his craft is evident. He has seen these beautiful fruits through winter’s frost and summer’s heat. The taste is extraordinary.“It's delicious, and it's good for you," said Cepera. There is a lot more to this farmers market than the farm. There is something for people of all ages. You can take a trip back in time with bomber jackets or flashy disco jackets. A balloon artist delights children while their parents shop.“A lot of people come here for a good time with the family. Tons of great food, tons of great art” said Leo, a balloon artist who has lived in Chula Vista his whole life. He has performed at the farmers market for the past decade. The farmers market is open every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. 2426

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - An afternoon drive on the I-805 was interrupted by an explosion of glass, and a very close call.Just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jennifer Opdahl was northbound in the slow lane, and traffic was flowing. As she drove under the East Palomar Street overpass, she heard a close 'boom.' She didn't see anything flying at her, but she felt something."Kind of an explosion. Just heard glass splintering. It clearly came from my above my head. I think I ducked and screamed, but I was still driving," said Opdahl. When she later got out, she could barely believe what she was seeing: the sunroof on her Volkswagen Golf was shattered. Under the glass is a panel which slides back and forth. Whatever struck likely bounced off. Opdahl is thankful the sunroof wasn't open. The roof is inches from where her head was. "I dodged a bullet. I very easily could be dead right now," said Opdahl.Ophdal believes that bullet was a something heavy tossed from the overpass. Her ordeal similar to nine other incidents in the Sports Arena area and Pacific Beach, dating back to November."Incredibly irresponsible and incredibly dangerous," said Opdahl.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the California Highway Patrol at 619-220-5492. 1265

China ordered the United States on Friday to close its consulate in the western city of Chengdu, ratcheting up a diplomatic conflict at a time when relations have sunk to their lowest level in decades. The move was a response to the Trump administration’s order this week for Beijing to close its consulate in Houston after Washington accused Chinese agents of trying to steal medical and other research in Texas. The Chinese foreign ministry appealed to Washington to reverse its “wrong decision.”Chinese-U.S. relations have soured amid a mounting array of conflicts including trade, the handling of the coronavirus pandemic, technology, spying accusations, Hong Kong and allegations of abuses against Chinese Muslims.“The measure taken by China is a legitimate and necessary response to the unjustified act by the United States,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.“The current situation in Chinese-U.S. relations is not what China desires to see. The United States is responsible for all this,” it said. “We once again urge the United States to immediately retract its wrong decision and create necessary conditions for bringing the bilateral relationship back on track.”Also Friday, the U.S. State Department sent out a notice warning Americans in China of a “heightened risk of arbitrary detention.”“U.S. citizens may be subjected to prolonged interrogations and extended detention for reasons related to ‘state security,’” the notice said.Americans may be detained or deported for “sending private electronic messages critical” of the Chinese government, it said. The notice gave no indication of what prompted the warning. On Tuesday, the Trump administration ordered the Houston consulate closed within 72 hours. It alleged Chinese agents tried to steal data from facilities including the Texas A&M medical system. The ministry on Thursday rejected the allegations as “malicious slander” and warned that the Houston consulate’s closure was “breaking down the bridge of friendship” between the two countries. The United States has an embassy in Beijing and consulates in five other mainland cities — Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang and Wuhan. It also has a consulate in Hong Kong, a Chinese territory. The consulate in Chengdu is responsible for monitoring Tibet and other areas in the southwest inhabited by non-ethnic Chinese minorities that are considered especially sensitive by Beijing.Asian stock markets, already uneasy about the uncertain pace of recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, fell Friday on the news of the closure.China’s market benchmark, the Shanghai Composite Index, lost 3.9%. Hong Kong’s main index declined 2.2%.“Alongside the eviction of the Houston Chinese Consulate, the risk of the U.S.-China conflict escalating into a ‘Cold War’ is worrying,” Hayaki Narita of Mizuho Bank said in a report. The consulate in Chengdu was in the news in 2012 when Wang Lijun, the police chief of the major city of Chongqing, visited and told American officials his concerns about the death of a British business associate of the wife of Chongqing’s Communist Party secretary, Bo Xilai. That prompted the British Embassy to ask for a new investigation, which led to the arrest and conviction of Bo’s wife. Bo was later dismissed and sentenced to prison. The consulate was surrounded by police while Wang was inside. He later emerged and was arrested and sentenced to 15 years on charges of corruption and defection. The U.S. government has refused to confirm whether Wang asked for asylum. Also Thursday, the U.S. Justice Department said it believes the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco is harboring a Chinese researcher, Tang Juan, who is accused of lying about her background in the Communist Party’s military wing on a visa application. The department announced criminal charges of visa fraud against Tang and three other Chinese researchers. It said Tang lied on a visa application last October as she made plans to work at the University of California, Davis, and again during an FBI interview months later.U.S. authorities this week announced criminal charges against two Chinese computer hackers who are accused of targeting companies that are working on vaccines for the coronavirus.U.S. officials including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have stepped up accusations of technology theft. In a speech Thursday, Pompeo said some Chinese students and others “come here to steal our intellectual property and to take this back to their country.” 4483

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Wednesday, the City of Chula Vista filed a lawsuit against the Monsanto Company for chemical contamination. In the lawsuit filed by a law firm named Baron and Budd, the city says chemicals known as PCBs manufactured by Monsanto, now known as Bayer, have escaped into the city’s municipal stormwater system, leading the city to spend substantial amounts of money on cleanup.PCBs are known to cause a number of health issues in humans, such as cancer and damage to the immune system.RELATED: Jury awards 9 million in damages after man says he got terminal cancer from Monsanto's RoundupMonsanto was the sole manufacturer of the chemicals in the US between 1935 and 1979, when the chemicals were banned by the federal government.“Monsanto needs to stop playing games and accept responsibility for cleaning up the mess it’s made,” said Baron & Budd Shareholder, John Fiske. “Chula Vista is the latest city to recognize that PCB cleanup costs shouldn’t be passed on to its citizens, and I anticipate more cities and states will continue to follow suit.”RELATED: Bayer buys seed company Monsanto for billionThe chemicals were used numerous of commercial and industrial applications like paint, electric transformers, cable coatings, sealants and lubricants.Scientists say PCBs can’t be contained to their original applications so, when it rains, the chemicals escape into stormwater systems that wash into bodies of water, such as the bay.The law firm representing Chula Vista also represents San Diego, San Jose, Oakland, Berkley, Long Beach and several other cities in the Pacific Northwest in similar lawsuits. 1680
