Travelers heading to the Caribbean, Latin America, or Hawaii on American Airlines will now have the opportunity to participate in its COVID-19 pre-flight testing program."Our initial pre-flight testing has performed remarkably well, including terrific customer feedback about the ease and availability of testing options," said Robert Isom, President of American Airlines said in a press release on Monday. "This next phase is an invigorating step forward in American's relentless pursuit of reopening international travel and driving industry recovery while delivering a safe and positive travel experience."Beginning Nov. 16, passengers traveling from Miami, Florida, to Belize, Grenada, and St. Lucia will be offered pre-flight COVID-19 testing with a convenient at-home testing option.American stated travelers to each country will have three options when it comes to testing using an at-home test from LetsGetChecked:Belize: Travelers over the age of 6 must complete testing within 72 hours of departure.Grenada: Passengers must complete testing within seven days before their departure date.St. Lucia: Anyone over the age of 5 must complete testing within seven days of departure."Customers cannot board flights to St. Lucia without presenting a negative test result. This week, experts are sending warnings to those considering seeing people outside their household without quarantining first. One aerosol expert weighs in on just how dangerous the holiday could be."My simplest advice is it is not a good idea to meet with people outside of your household for a holiday meal. That’s the most important message that can be underscored, and the reason for that is there are multiple ways this virus can be transferred,” said Alex Huffman, an aerosol expert and associate professor at the University of Denver. “The closer you are increases the chances of that, but aerosols can come out of your mouth and mix into the room. The longer you're in that room, the more chance you have of getting sick.”Huffman says time, ventilation and proximity have a big impact on whether coronavirus droplets can spread and infect others."When you breathe and talk, the louder you talk, droplets and aerosols come out of your mouth. So, traditionally, droplets are on the bigger side, aerosols are on the smaller side," said Huffman.With no mask on, these droplets can land on the faces of people around you or on their plates."And so, the biggest danger with the Thanksgiving meal or holiday meal or any meal specifically, restaurants included, are that you have to take off your mask to eat and that is why eating together indoors is so dangerous," said Huffman.Huffman demonstrated how fast droplets can spread in the air by showing how quickly food coloring can spread in water. He also analyzed the risks of eating a Thanksgiving meal in person, taking commonly-used models and applying varying factors that come into play when eating with people outside of your household."And then, I used the same model to say, ‘What happens if we meet for holiday meals?’ Let's say we have 10 people. We all eat for two hours. We all don't have masks on, and then, we ran different scenarios. If it was a small room, a large room, a medium-sized room and then estimate the amount of risk that would be from aerosol," said Huffman.Matching with community transmission rates, Huffman estimated that the probability of each person at the table having COVID-19 was about 5 percent."If it's a small room, everybody has something like a 15 percent chance of getting infected, even if we had no idea if anybody was infected or not. If it's a big room, it's a little bit less than that," explained Huffman.Ventilation also comes into play, which is why experts are advising that if you really are planning to meet with family this holiday, do it outside. Opening windows and doors also helps. Huffman also has some tools people can use, such as a carbon dioxide monitor or you can create your own box fan air filter."On the back, this is a furnace filter that’s also 20 inches and so you tape them together so they're well-sealed. You turn it on high and you blow the air through this filter and that removes the particles in the room that could potentially contain virus in it," said Huffman.Still, Huffman and other medical experts agree this won't completely eliminate the risk of spreading COVID-19. The safest thing to do is stay home and avoid celebrating Thanksgiving with people who are not part of your household. 3230

TIJUANA, Mexico. (KGTV and AP) -- At least three people were killed in wind-driven fires that scorched a large swath of Baja, California last week, the Associated Press reports. Last Friday, Mexico’s civil defense told AP the fires forced more than 1,600 people to evacuate their homes. The fires burned near Tecate, Tijuana and between the coastal towns of Rosarito and Ensenada. The fire near Tecate burned more than 35,000 acres, according to AP. Schools were also shut down in Tijuana, Tecate and Rosarito due to heavy smoke in the area. Mexican officials told CNN the fire tore through 125 homes, 30 of which are in the city of Tijuana. Local support to help those affected by the fires is growing in San Diego, especially from the local Kumeyaay population. Anna Gloria Rodriguez showed a growing pile of donations in her office Wednesday. “Furniture, some blankets and pillows,” Rodriguez said. Rodriguez is part of the Kumeyaay Nation and is heading up the effort to collect donations to bring to her family across the border. “The Kumeyaay Nation has people on both sides of the border. We have family in all the communities,” she continued. “The whole big mountains already burned but still one part on fire, so there was a lot of people in the community trying to put dirt and water.”While her family and many others are safe, the fires left some without electricity or easy access to clean water or food. Top officials tapped with developing, approving and distributing COVID-19 vaccines say they're on track to begin distributing the first doses in the coming weeks and plan to vaccinate 100 million Americans by the end of February.In a press conference on Wednesday, Health and Human Services Director Alex Azar said the FDA would meet on Dec. 10 regarding Pfizer's vaccine candidate and on Dec. 17 regarding Moderna's vaccine candidate. The agency is currently reviewing both for Emergency Use Authorization.Both companies have been manufacturing doses of their candidate for several months in the hopes of ramping up supply in case of approval. Hundreds of thousands of doses of both doses will be ready for delivery as soon as approval is granted.Dr. Moncef Slaoui, Operation Warp Speed's chief advisor, stressed that the data from the vaccine trials are "clear" and shows both candidates to be safe and effective.According to Gen. Gus Perna, the operation's chief operating officer, the Department of Defense is prepared to deliver several million doses of both Pfizer and Moderna's vaccine upon approval.
