BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- "Teaching is the most splendid profession under the sun," said Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday, while meeting with elementary and high school teachers at his office in central Beijing, to mark Teachers' Day, which falls on Sept. 10 every year.     Prior to their meeting, Wen showed his visitors around at the former office room of late Premier Zhou Enlai, in the Zhongnanhai compound, where both the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council are headquartered. The other seven also gave their opinions on a series of issues including the current educational reform, and professional training, compulsory education for schoolchildren of migrant workers from rural areas.     In his speech, the premier urged entrepreneurs to contribute more to the educational sector. "For entrepreneurs, the best way to pay back society is to invest in education," he said, in reply to a proposal by Liu Pengzhi, president of a local high school, who called for multiplying the resources of investment for education. He urged teachers to set a good example for students, be more creative so that they can train more creative talents, and make greater efforts to obtain new knowledge to keep pace with the times.     At the end of his speech, Wen showed his profound gratefulness, love and respect for teachers, especially those working in remote, rural and poverty-stricken areas.     After the talks, Wen had a brief lunch with his visitors

BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Saturday met separately with several foreign leaders in the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing.    The foreign leaders included President of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Lee Myung bak, President of the Philippines Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Mongolian President Nambaryn Enkhbayar, Uzbek President Islam Karimov, and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.     The leaders all attended the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, held in the National Stadium in north Beijing on Friday night. XIAMEN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- China will further open up to the world and step up its international investment cooperation, Vice Premier Wang Qishan promised here Monday.     Addressing the 12th Xiamen International Trade and Investment Fair in the east Fujian Province, Wang said the country would continue to stick to the national policy of opening up, constantly improve its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, and create more space for foreign companies to develop their business in China.     China's reform and opening up policy had significantly transformed the country in the past 30 years, and its accession to the World Trade Organization had further integrated it with the global economy, he said.     Although the country met with severe natural disasters and an unfavorable international economic environment, its coping measures made its national economy stay healthy on the whole, he said, noting it was confident in and capable of overcoming the current difficulties and challenges.     Expounding on improving its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, Wang vowed to further improve the country's investment environment including building a service-oriented government, a market of fair competition, a transparent legal environment and stable policy environment.     He also stressed lifting the quality and diversifying the means of utilizing foreign investment, and encouraging domestic enterprises to invest in foreign countries.     The Chinese government had always supported trade and investment liberalization and opposed protectionism in any form, he said, vowing to work with the world to eliminate trade and investment barriers and cope with various difficulties and challenges for global economic prosperity and stability.     Attendants of the forum are from 120 countries and regions and seven international organizations

  

CHENGDU, June 15 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Saturday ordered that the title of "heroic quake-relief force" be given to a helicopter regiment that showed loyalty and courage in rescue work following last month's major quake in southwest China. The command by Hu, also Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China, was announced at an award meeting here on Sunday.     The regiment of army aviation under the Chengdu Military Command did an excellent job in quake-relief missions and showed great loyalty, courage and dedication, the command said. Photo taken on May 16, 2008 shows that a Mi-171 transport helicopter is ready to transport people from quake-hit Maoxian County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, to a safe place. A Mi-171 transport helicopter engaging in quake relief work near the Yingxiu Township, Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province crashed on Saturday afternoon, according to military sources    All Chinese military members should learn from the regiment, which put people's lives first, it said.     The regiment has dispatched 1,848 helicopter flights for rescue and transport missions since the quake on May 12 and evacuated 1,126 injured people from the region.     More than 619 tons of food, water and medicines have been delivered and 2,171 people stranded by the quake were transferred by the regiment.     One of the regiment's helicopters crashed in a deep forest ravine in Sichuan Province during a rescue mission on May 31, leaving all five crew and 13 passengers dead.     The honor awarded to the regiment was the top honor of all the regiment members and all military members who participated in quake-relief missions, Xu Caihou, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, said at the meeting.
