MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican government said Friday it is busing migrants who have applied for asylum in the United States to the southern Mexico state of Chiapas.About 30,000 migrants have been sent back to northern Mexican border cities to await U.S. asylum hearings under a policy known as "Remain in Mexico" under which they have to wait for hearings months away. But few provisions have been made for them to be housed or seek legal representation, and many cities on the northern border are among the most dangerous in Mexico.Mexico's National Immigration Institute said it is uses to move migrants south from Nuevo Laredo and Matamoros — two of the most dangerous cities on the northern border. Both cities are in northern Tamaulipas state across from Texas and are dominated by drug cartels.The migrant agency said the goal of the busing is "to provide a safer alternative for those who do not want to remain on the U.S.-Mexico border." It did not say how many people had been taken by bus to Chiapas so far.The Associated Press reported that in July, Mexico had begun busing some of the returned migrants out of Tamaulipas to the city of Monterrey, in neighboring Nuevo Leon state. Authorities said it was for their safety, but many were dropped off in that unfamiliar city in the middle of the night.Officials gave no indication of how the migrants would return to the border from Monterrey for their court dates. Marijuana is still federally illegal, but multiple states will vote on either medical or recreational marijuana measures this election. In South Dakota, voters will be deciding on both."It's very rural, I like to tell people it's one big small town," said Melissa Mentele, Executive Director of New Approach South Dakota, when explaining South Dakota. "South Dakota is incredibly conservative."This upcoming election, South Dakota is looking at a traditionally liberal ballot measure -- allowing medical marijuana."It's about 70 to 30 red to blue. And if you're red, you typically aren't pro-marijuana," David Tingle, a resident of Sioux Falls since 1996, said.But pro-marijuana organizations are looking to change that."We have patients from every single demographic. We have patients that are 6-month-old babies with seizure disorders up to 90 plus-year-old people," said Mentele, The organization has been working on patient access to medical marijuana in South Dakota for six years. This election, through Measure 26."We want to be done. There's a lot of us that have given our lives to this," she said.South Dakota is the first state to vote on medical marijuana, Measure 26, and recreational marijuana, Amendment A, in the same election. Measure 26 would establish a medical marijuana program. Amendment A would legalize recreational use for those over 21 and have written for a medical marijuana program."The revenue from Amendment A would be split 50-50 to our schools in South Dakota and our state's general fund," said Drey Samuelson, Political Director for South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws."People don't have any real trouble getting marijuana. If you want it, you can get it. The question is where you're going to get it from, an illegal, illicit source," he said. "The alternative is people can buy it from a clean, well-lit dispensary."Despite promises of additional revenue and jobs for the state, Amendment A is not supported by everyone."They're going to create an additional consumer choice, they're not going to increase the wealth of South Dakota," David Owen, President of the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce, said. He is also the chairman of the "No Way on Amendment A" ballot committee."It threatens increased youth usage. It threatens more traffic accidents. It's an intoxicant," Owen said.Owen said the Chamber supports the medical use of marijuana but said an amendment to the state's constitution for recreational marijuana makes no sense."This is a constitutional amendment, and this is not the place. Tobacco is not in the constitution; alcohol is not in the constitution," Owen said. "Our polling suggests that a good segment of people that want to vote for Amendment A want to do so for medical reasons. They want to help people that are sick."This includes South Dakotans like David Tingle."If anybody is in pain and that is the only thing that helps them or helps them the best, there should be accommodations made for them, I think. I have concerns that that could be abused," said Tingle, who works at a local contracting company. "I've lived in South Dakota since 1996."While he understands medical marijuana use, he said he does not want recreational cannabis in the state."I will vote against it, and I fully expect it to be defeated," he said.South Dakota is one of five states voting on a marijuana issue this election. Currently, four states have no cannabis access -- Idaho, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas, according to information from the National Conference of State Legislatures in March 2020. However, it will take more than telehealth sessions to expand the number of people they can help.“A therapist can still only see five or six patients a day even through teletherapy, where as with our program where they’re texting back and forth more than they’re doing face to face sessions, we’re able to scale right now almost six times scalability,”Shrewsbury said.Mental health centers are experimenting with more possibilities to help reach people where they’re at.“Everyone realized there's a need for mental health and I think people are starting to bring innovation in,” Shrewsbury said. 3199

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – About 250 miles above earth, the International Space Station remains in constant orbit around the planet.“It's an amazing facility,” said retired NASA astronaut Rex Walheim. “It's about the size of a five-bedroom house.”It’s an incredible feat of construction, involving space agencies from multiple countries and astronauts like Walheim, who flew three missions to the International Space Station.“The first portion of the space station program was basically constructing it,” Walheim said. “So, that was what I was most involved with, bringing pieces of the space station, doing spacewalks to bolt new pieces on and to activate them.”In the now 20 years since the space station welcomed the first crew, it’s become a place of valuable research for companies like Techshot.“The people that make the experimental instruments that go in there are people like Techshot,” said Dave Reed of Techshot.We visited Techshot’s facility near the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.Their work on the space station includes measuring bone loss, for use in developing treatments for osteoporosis.“Understanding osteoporosis is obviously of great interest to people on earth,” Reed said. “So, drug companies have been a lot of our customers.”Techshot also created a “bio fabrication facility,” which was installed on the space station.Using stem cells, the machine can 3D print human cartilage, a process that works best in a zero-gravity space environment. The idea is to eventually be able to 3D print whole organs that could be used in transplants.“It’s in the future, but it’s not as far away as you might think,” Reed said.Among the other things the space station astronauts have helped develop for use here on earth are advanced water purification systems, where they recycle 93% of the water on the station. Astronauts on board have also collected valuable data, like visual images, to help support first responders to natural disasters in the U.S. and around the world.Those are advances that might not be possible without the space station.“Young people today have never known a time when there hasn't been humans in space,” Walheim said. “That's really amazing.”It’s a whole generation who see humans living and working in space as an everyday part of life. 2288
