Behind the idea of 'mini weddings' was Los Willows venue owner, Cathie Ransom."With this horrible pandemic that has affected everyone throughout the world, this is a great way to service for our customers that’d like to have a wedding now and not have to wait," Ransom described.The 'mini weddings' didn't include everything a traditional wedding would like dinner and dancing but it was close."We have the officiant, the wedding cake, the photographer to capture memories, so everything is there ready to go so they don’t have to worry about a thing."It allowed up to 10 guests, all social distanced and came at a fraction of the price."Our couples arrive then they have time to get ready, and then they start the ceremony. We have the cutting of the wedding cake and then we have photos," Ransom added.She said when the pandemic hit, it forced her Oceanside venue to close. But thankfully with quick thinking of 'mini weddings', her Fallbrook location stayed open was able to satisfy anxious couples."I feel like whenever life throws you a curve, you just got to get up and figure it out and usually its for the better."It was a popular choice for those near and far."We’re getting couples from LA, Riverside and Orange County driving down because they don’t want to travel too far."The 2-hour window let Ransom fit up to four weddings in a day and allowed her to keep costs low. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Video of a mystery car prowler is helping bring neighbors in Allied Gardens together.Along Estrella Avenue early Friday morning, Thomas Arevalo found his 2010 Honda Accord missing from the street in front of his home. Inside the trunk were hundreds of dollars worth of equipment belonging to the Rock Church baseball ministry.When one neighbor learned of the theft, he searched through his surveillance video and saw something suspicious. Just before 5 a.m., just feet away from where that car was parked, was a man wearing a hat and holding a skateboard, going from vehicle to vehicle to vehicle.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"Just brazen with not a care in the world. Just looking through cars with a flashlight ... shopping for whatever he wants out of someone's car," said Arevalo.Investigators are taking a close look at the video and so is the rest of the neighborhood after it was posted on the Nextdoor app."Our neighborhood is coming together," said Arevalo.There have been dozens of responses to the post. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wednesday a preliminary hearing began for a man accused of aiming a loaded gun at off-duty San Diego Police officers at a Mission Valley bar parking lot last November.A San Diego Superior Court Judge listened to testimony from officers in case involving the defendant Jonathan Felix. The incident happened outside of McGreggor’s Bar and Grill on Nov. 7, 2018.Wednesday, officer Jonathan Rodriquez was the first witness on the stand. Rodriguez said he had a few beers after work with coworkers that night. He said Felix was sitting about 20 feet away from the off-duty officers.Once the bar was closing they all walked out into the parking lot.RELATED: San Diego man says off-duty SDPD officers assaulted himRodriguez claims he saw Felix looking into his car or looking at his car. He said after that he and the other officers watched Felix go to his own car.“The defendant got a bicycle out of his car, I thought it was strange and he left,” said Rodrigues. “After he left he came back a second time.”Felix claims he lives nearby and uses the parking lot at that shopping center because parking is limited at his apartment complex. Rodriguez says an off-duty officer then walked over to Felix and had an “innocent conversation." He said Felix asked the officers if they’d like to smoke, but they all denied him. Rodriguez decided he did not feel comfortable being there, and says he left in his own vehicle.After that, surveillance video shows what transpired.Felix is seen having interactions with the other off-duty officers, and then he’s seen holding a gun.The officers began beating Felix, leaving him with a bloody head, several lacerations and bruises. He was arrested that night. Second on the stand was officer Andrew Duncan. He was one of the officers involved in the fight. He claims they walked out of the bar and saw Felix acting strange. Duncan says Felix left and came back saying the other officers threatened to beat him. Duncan went on to testify that's when Felix showed his gun. Then, Duncan said, all 4 officers pointed their gun at Felix then tackled him. They say they were wrestling with him to get the gun away. Tasha Williamson with Building Justice says Felix shouldn't be facing these charges, but that the officers should face assault charges because Felix wasn't doing anything wrong that night. Williamson says the officers were off-duty and should have left Felix alone.Felix is charged with two felony weapons charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. He’s also charged with and a misdemeanor drug charge for being in possession of a controlled substance.Before the preliminary hearing started his lawyer, Alicia Freeze, spoke outside of the courtroom.“Uniquely and I think very creatively, my client is not being charged with brandishing a weapon, he’s not being charged with assault with a deadly weapon, he’s not being charged with a lot of the initial charges he was booked under,” she said.On Jan. 4 the San Diego Police Department issued the following statement: “The San Diego Police Department submitted a criminal case to the District Attorney's Office regarding this incident, in which Mr. Felix pulled a gun on four off-duty police officers. He has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and possession of a controlled substance. Mr. Felix is entitled to the presumption of innocence and the full facts of this case will be litigated as the criminal case proceeds. As in any situation where there are allegations of misconduct, the San Diego Police Department has initiated an internal investigation. If found, any misconduct will be handled accordingly.”At the end of this preliminary hearing a judge will decide if there’s enough evidence for the case to move to trial. If the case goes to trial and Felix is found guilty and convicted, his lawyer says he could be looking at one to two years in prison.Several supporters of Felix showed up to court today and plan to have a press conference following the hearing. 4063

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With temperatures expected to soar into the 80s and 90s along San Diego's coast this weekend, lifeguards say they'll be extra vigilant at beaches and bays."We still want people to come and enjoy the beach," said San Diego Lifeguards Lt. Rich Stropky. "But come talk to us first; We will describe the do's and don'ts and any safety issues."In addition to the usual rip currents and stingrays, lifeguards say people need to be careful about over-exertion and heat-related illness like heat stroke or dehydration.Study: Longer and more frequent heatwaves expected for Southern California"Especially if you're at a beach like Torrey Pines, where you have to hike in or hike out," said Stropky. "So, bring lots of water. Hydrate often, not just when you're thirsty. And then stay cool, get some shade and make sure that sunscreen's on."Lifeguards also say they expect big crowds, which means swimmers and boaters will have to share the water.Tragedy struck last weekend when a Jet Ski and boat collided, killing one person. Stropky said everyone needs to have a heightened sense of awareness and keep their head on a swivel."It's very very dangerous," he said. "We've had several accidents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While Michelin decided to postpone its annual award of stars to California restaurants this year due to the pandemic and wildfires, undercover eaters did find several "discoveries" across the state.The new-found culinary delights were announced as part of Michelin Guide's "Family Meal" livestream to celebrate the resilience of restaurants and raise money for the California Association of Food Banks.In San Diego, five restaurants pleasantly surprised guide inspectors were Tuetano Taqueria in San Ysidro, Morning Glory in Little Italy, Dija Mara in Oceanside, Soichi Sushi in University Heights, and Sushi Tadokoro in Old Town.Inspectors said Tuetano Taqueria Chef Priscilla Curiel’s guisados "are every inch the equal of Baja’s—down to the fair prices and hefty portions (and without the long traffic lines on your way home)." The guide also hailed the restaurant's beef birria that is topped with a bone filled with buttery marrow on top of the taco.Morning Glory's soufflé pancakes are "worth waking up for," according to the guide, and dishes like fried rice with pork belly and eggs and potatoes au gratin are "a great riff on tradition."Indonesian stop Dija Mara serves up creative cocktails and delicious nasi goreng (fried rice with shrimp, pork belly, chicken, and the yolk of a sunny egg) and charred eggplant with smoked tomato sambal and crispy fried shallots, inspectors said.Soichi impressed with its sushi offerings, including its pike mackerel, kampachi, and sea bass dishes. Michelin says Soichi's shirumono fish soup is also a must before trying out the restaurant's green tea ice cream.Inspectors say Sushi Tadokoro's omakase is a must-try, especially the sushi joint's oysters and scallops.
