(KGTV) - A state inspection found 12 flaws in Poway's drinking water delivery system less than three months before the city's precautionary boil water advisory.City officials remain adamant that the issues raised by the inspection had nothing to do with the nearly week-long advisory that ended Dec. 6. A storm drain overflowed and backed up into its water treatment facility's clearwell reservoir due to Thanksgiving rains. Residents began reporting brownish water. The city temporarily fixed the problem, but state officials have said they anticipate issuing fines. This year, the political fact-checking website, picked the online smear campaign against the Parkland students after the deadly school shooting in Florida.Gina Montalto, 14, was one of the students killed during the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. For her family, this will be the first Christmas without her.“It is by far the toughest,” says her father, Tony Montalto. “Gina loved the holiday season. She loved decorating for Christmas.”Seventeen families lost loved ones in the shooting. But not even a tragedy involving children stopped online trolls from starting conspiracy theories that falsely accused students of being “crisis actors.” Others claimed the teens had secretly organized before the shooting.“We are not actors,” says Montalto. “We are not politically driven. We’re parents and spouses that lost our loved ones.”The amount of lies leveled at the Parkland students and their families were enough for Politifact to name the smears as its lie of the year.“We felt the smears against the Parkland students were so egregious against young people who had done nothing to bring this on that it did bring it to another level,” said Angie Holan, a Politifact editor.Holan said the smear campaign is a troubling sign of where the country is in these polarizing times.“If people want to come forward and debate political issues because of something that happened to them in their everyday lives and then they would get smeared – it just seems like something new and disturbing,” said Holan.After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Montalto became the president of Stand with Parkland, a national organization that pushes for laws that address violence in schools. He said it makes him angry and sad that some people think the shooting was fabricated.“It’s very hard to think that people would believe that this could be a hoax,” he says. “As we experience the tremendous loss, we know the reality of the situation. Every day we walk past an empty bedroom.”In determining the lie of the year, Holan said she and her team look for the most significant falsehoods and that are politically significant.In Politifact’s online poll, readers chose a different lie of the year from President Donald Trump.At a campaign rally back in October, President Trump said, "The Democrats want to invite caravan after caravan of illegal aliens into our country. (KGTV) - A teenager is using chalk art to try and lift the spirits of her neighbors during the Coronavirus Pandemic.Lori Vildibill has covered the sidewalks of her street in inspirational messages and doodles, hoping they can make people smile."It's mostly things I had been saying to myself to try to get me to feel better," she says of where she got the ideas for dozens of messages. "Then I thought, I can't just write a bunch of words. Maybe I'll draw a little flower here and there to brighten up people's days."Lori, a Senior in High School, says missing out on things like prom, graduation, and yearbook signing because of Coronavirus had been somewhat depressing. She thought the drawings could change her moods, and also help her neighbors."I realized that I'm probably not the only person feeling that way, and if I can encourage people to just smile or get outside and walk, check out what I'm doing, it would be good for everyone," she says.Even though recent rain has washed away most of the drawings already, Lori says she'll replace them with new ones. (KGTV) -- A cluster of ten church-run thrift shops at a Poway shopping center, described as a “Disneyland” for discount hunters, will begin to close early next year.In preparation for redevelopment, the owners of the Carriage Center West Shopping Center near Poway and Carriage roads have informed all the tenants that their leases will expire in 2020.While some of the stores will move to new locations, at least four of the church-run thrifts are in danger of closing permanently.“It would take a miracle to find a place that we could afford to move to,” said Marcia Harrod, who has volunteered for 19 years at St. Bartholomew's Thrift Shop.St. Bart’s has operated a thrift shop for 53 years.Sumner Rollings, the president of the thrift shop, said a committee of volunteers spent 18 months searching for a new location, without luck.“The biggest factor has been the cost per square foot of space,” he said.The shop’s lease will expire in February.Built in 1974, the Carriage Center is considered a “mecca” for thrift store fans because it offers 10 stores within walking distance, along with restaurants and other service businesses.“It’s really sad,” said one customer named Tina who said she shops at the Carriage Center weekly. “I’m retired and this is my Disneyland.”St. Michael’s Thrift Shop is also in danger of closing permanently.“We don’t charge Nordstrom prices so we can’t pay Nordstrom rent either,” said volunteer Ken Baumann.Sales at St. Michael’s keep 1,000 kids in Haiti clothed, he said.St. Bart’s raised ,000 for church services last year, said Rollings.“It’s been an incredible run as far as supporting the outreach of the church, and all good things come to an end,” Rollings said. “Something else will take its place.” 1766

President Donald Trump is expected to attend the Army-Navy football game Saturday. He will be one of a small group of people attending the typically packed game.Because of coronavirus pandemic safety restrictions, the only fans in the stands at the annual game was limited to the Brigade of Midshipmen and Army cadets, according to the Baltimore Sun.The Army-Navy game is typically played in a larger stadium, however Saturday the teams will face-off at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. This is the only the sixth time the Army-Navy game will be played on a college campus, the last time was also at the Military Academy in 1943 due to World War II, according to the Baltimore Sun.Trump attended the Army-Navy game twice as president and as president-elect in 2016.
