It only took one inning in Game 1 of the World Series for Taco Bell's annual promotion to come into fruition. Thanks to Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts' stolen base after getting a leadoff hit on Tuesday, everyone in America is eligible for a free Doritos Locos taco from Taco Bell on Nov. 1 from 2-6 p.m. According to MLB, the promotion is available at participating locations and while supplies last. 2018 marks the fourth year in a row that Taco Bell has given away tacos to everyone nationwide. Last year, Cameron Maybin earned a stolen base in the 11th inning of Game 2 of the World Series.  639

It’s not uncommon to convert an old warehouse into lofts or apartments. But what about converting something a little more unique, a little more historic?Something like, a church? That’s what developers did in a Denver, Colorado neighborhood. The Gothic-revival, Methodist Episcopal church was built in 1889, designed by Denver architect Franklin E. Kidder. It was declared an historic landmark in 1970. But that didn't stop it from ending up abandoned as the neighborhood changed.Enter developers with a vision. They re-envisioned the church as The Sanctuary Lofts. They preserved much of the church’s unique features, like the stained-glass windows, exposed brick, and wood paneling, and converted the church into condominiums. There’s even a confessional in one of the condos serving as the room’s focal point. One of the 12 condos in this church was recently on the market. Realtor David Wheaton said each unit offers different pieces of the past. “In some units we actually have stained glass windows exposed and holy items that were a part of the church that are actually infused into the units," said Wheaton. “Many of these buildings such as this church, the congregation wasn’t able to support it financially. It kind of fell into disrepair for a while and it was deconsecrated at some time.”While this conversion was done long before the current housing crisis, it underscores the need to find places to live. In this case, the condos come with a completely unique twist on what’s possible. This converted church is just one example of creative living makeovers. The Arcade, the first indoor shopping mall in the United States, is now home to 48 apartments.  The Arcade is in Providence, Rhode Island and was built in 1828. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and a National Historic Landmark. In Charleston, South Carolina, the Cigar Factory is another example of an historic building beginning a new chapter.  It was built in 1881 as a cotton manufacturing facility before converting to cigar production in 1903. While plans to transform it into condos 100 years later were ultimately scrapped, it’s now home to office, restaurant and event space.  2265

Israeli news outlet Haaretz reported on Tuesday that explosions were heard south of the Syrian capital of Damascus as tensions appear to be heating in the Middle East. Syrian state TV reported that Syria downed two Israeli missiles over Syria late Tuesday. This news comes as the US State Department warned of possible attacks on the Israeli settlement of Golan Heights. The US State Department issued a travel alert on Tuesday as President Donald Trump announced the US no longer is part of the Iran nuclear agreement. Haaretz reported that the Israeli army said it believes Iran is planning to carry out an imminent strike from Syria. While the United States' European allies fiercely opposed the US walking away from the Iran deal, Israel applauded Trump's decision.  827

In South Tampa, close to the Hillsborough Bay, people didn’t get the flooding that usually comes with heavy rain. Instead they are dealing with the aftermath of high wind; downed trees and branches. The sound of saws cutting through bark will become a familiar one in the next few days, as people try to get rid of the trees uprooted by Irma.Nancy Callahan might not be excited about the work, but would choose it over a different outcome.“My son and his three-year-old and his friend were up in the attic space which is a big big room and bathroom,” Callahan explains. “And if it had gone across the house they could've been killed.”Just a few streets away, another tree fell taking the street's power along with it. “Well I was sure glad the tree felt that way and not the other way,” says Domenic Massari who rode out the storm across the street. The tree barely missed Marcy Mixon’s home.“There was a horrible explosion two of them,” Mixon remembers. “And I knew that the cable box was hit, the tree came down and the whole house shook.”It wasn’t just trees we saw in places they shouldn’t be. This stop light wasn’t doing much good on the ground. This downed billboard was no match for Irma’s wind.At the Dill’s family home clean-up is a family affair. Mia Dill describes Hurricane Irma as scary.“I've never been through a hurricane before,” Dill says. “I didn't know what to expect.”And after making it through the storm, her father says these are moments they appreciate even more.“As a father, you know, of three young children it's very scary,” Tony Dill says. “For someone like me I travel a lot. I am out of town so just grateful that we could be home together as a family and all be together.”Overall people, especially those who live close to downed trees are grateful because they know the damage could have been much worse. 1859

It’s the classic vision of Election Day – head to your polling place, check in and vote. But this year, the tradition at the base of our democracy will look very different. Ballots will arrive in the mail for more people than ever due to the pandemic. So, how does the process work? It’s streamlined and closely monitored. You, a voter, get your ballot in the mail. You fill it out and seal it in the provided envelope. It’s crucial you don’t forget to sign in the designated area. From there, you can add postage and drop it in the mail. Some cities have ballot drop boxes that go directly to the county with no stamp or post office needed.Once the state has your ballot, it goes through different stations where independent workers open the envelope, scan the ballot, and check to make sure everything is valid. That process is often open for public viewing, either in-person or streaming online. While that’s meant to provide some transparency, mail-in voting is new to millions of people and some worry it’s not safe and secure. The head of the Federal Election Commission recently tried to put worries at bay. She is quoted as saying “there’s simply no basis for the conspiracy theory that voting by mail causes fraud.”And the statistics back that statement up. The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, found 143 voter fraud convictions out of 250 million mail-in ballots cast since 2000. That works out to about eight cases per year, nationwide. If you are voting by mail, there are three easy ways to make sure your ballot counts.1. Fill it out properly. Don’t go outside the lines or make any stray markings on the ballot.2. Sign your envelope and make sure the signature matches what you have on file.3. And vote early. Experts say it’s the best way to make sure your vote counts. 1801
