Although remote start technology has grown, thousands of cars were stolen in 2018 due to people leaving their car unattended to warm up during the winter. One insurance group is reminding Americans not to leave their cars running unattended.According to National Insurance Crime Bureau, 81,911 vehicles were stolen with the keys or fobs left in them in 2018. "We always warn consumers about the dangers of leaving a vehicle unlocked and not taking the fob or key with them, but leaving the car running with a key or fob in the vehicle is a prime target for an opportunistic thief," said NICB Chief Operating Officer Jim Schweitzer.The NICB also reminded drivers that in many states and municipalities, leaving a car with the key in the ignition and running could be against the law. For instance, in Ohio, it is a minor misdemeanor punishable by a 0 fine to leave a car running unattended on public property (such as the side of the road). In Colorado, the crime is a class B traffic infraction, punishable with a fine of up to 0. John Pregulman is on a mission to ensure that those who survived the Holocaust are not forgotten. Pregulman is occupied with documenting the estimated 200,000 still-living Holocaust survivors. “Their biggest fear is that they’ll be forgotten,” Pregulman said as he was surrounded by hundreds of portraits he took of survivors taped and pinned onto four walls.Among those Pregulman has documented was Mildred Ferro, 93, who said she was age 11 when she moved to the United States. Pregulman recently visited a senior living community to capture Ferro’s picture and story.Pregulman’s became motivated when he learned that many survivors worry that their story will be forgotten in history. What started as a one-time gig, taking photos at an event outside of Chicago five years ago, has turned into almost an obsession.“I took their pictures, they shared their stores, and I just became completely enthralled with these amazing people who I expected to be sad and unable to get past what had happened, and yet they were the happiest most positive and accomplished people I had met in a very long time,” he said.In hearing their stories, Pregulman and his wife soon learned a disturbing statistic: roughly one-in-three Holocaust survivors live in poverty.“Dignity had to be the centerpiece of everything,” his wife Amy Israel Pregulman said. “They deserve that.”They’ve started a non-profit called 1407
Kroger is tapping Microsoft to help create grocery stores of the future, and keep up with Amazon and Walmart.The two companies announced a partnership on Monday that will bring digital shelves, price tags, and advertisements to two pilot stores in Ohio and Washington State, near each company's headquarters.The stores are designed to make it easier for customers and workers to navigate the stores, saving shoppers time and Kroger money.Kroger has been partnering with companies such as Nuro, Ocado, and Walgreens as it aims to speed up grocery delivery and pickup, and experiment with digital tools to support its network of physical stores.The grocery chain is trying to give shoppers — who are increasingly browsing and buying everything from consumer electronics to breakfast cereal online — more reasons to visit physical stores.Under the latest partnership, customers first build a shopping list using Kroger's Scan, Bag, Go self-checkout app.Then, the app works with cloud-based software and sensors in the store to guide them around as they check off items on their list. For example, if a customer is looking for pasta, the app will direct the customer to the correct aisle. As the customer nears the aisle and approaches the type of pasta they chose, a personal avatar — like a banana or an avocado —will light up that directs them to the right one. They'll scan the item to check out, and the system will route the customer to the next item on their list."The notion of Kroger having to figure out what digital looks like in store for a grocery shopper is super important," said Jason Goldberg, head of the commerce practice at digital agency SapientRazorfish. He believes the tech could appeal to customers who want more information about the food they're buying, where it comes from, and how to store it in their homes.Shelves at the two tech-enhanced stores will also look much different than traditional stores.Instead of paper tags for prices and promotions, they will be digital. That creates room for Kroger to sell advertising space to brands, which could provide a new profit stream in the low-margin grocery business.Switching will help Kroger quickly change prices on products and create deals, instead of an employee manually making the changes.
