NINGBO, Zhejiang, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Internet of Things (IOT) -- which refers to digital networks of physical objects -- has huge potentials but many challenges lie ahead, said scientists, entrepreneurs and government officials on Sunday.IOT has become a catchword for those at the Information and Communication Technology and Urban Development Forum held in east China's coastal Ningbo this weekend on the sidelines of the Shanghai Expo; from ministers to mayors, scientists to entrepreneurs, keynote speakers to audiences.China should accelerate the development of the IOT industry so as to create a new platform for economic growth, said Li Yizhong, Minister of Industry and Information Technology in his opening speech to the forum. The first theme forum of the Shanghai World Expo is closed in Ningbo, a coastal city of east China's Zhejiang Province, May 16, 2010. The two-day forum focusing on information and communication technologies (ICT) and urban development attracted over 600 participants including renowned scholars and entrepreneurs.Minister Li's words were echoed by Zhao Hongzhu, communist party chief of Zhejiang Province, who called for more efforts to develop such key concepts as IOT, which, in his words, "present a brilliant future for urban life."In what's called Internet of Things, networks of real-world objects are linked to the Internet and interact through web services. As more objects are embedded with sensors, giving them the ability to communicate, and networked together, the possibilities are enormous, potentially resulting in new business models, improved business processes and reduced costs and risks, according to a March 2010 report by McKinsey & Co..

BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday called for more efforts to cut emissions and conserve energy to meet the country's target set by the 11th Five-Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.The task of fulfilling the goal was still tough , Wen said at a State Council meeting, adding that this year would be particularly difficult as the first quarter had already seen rising energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) in the major industrial sectors. In the first three months, six major industries, including steel, power and non-ferrous, saw a 3.2 percent growth in energy consumption per unit of GDP, Wen said.  Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) addresses a State Council meeting of conserving energy and cutting emissions in Beijing, China, on May 5, 2010. Wen Jiabao called for more efforts to cut emissions and conserve energy to meet the country's target set by the 11th Five-Year Plan on Wednesday. This came after a decline for the previous four years to 2009 of 14.38 percent."We can never break our pledge, stagger our resolution, or weaken our efforts, no matter how difficult it is," Wen said.

BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhua) -- China hopes that the deal Iran struck with Brazil and Turkey will help advance the process of resolving the Iran nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiations, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Tuesday.Yang made the comments in telepone conversations with his Turkish and Brazilian counterparts, Ahmet Davutoglu and Celso Amorim.Yang said that China has always sticked to the "dual-track" strategy in seeking a solution to the Iran nuclear issue and China appreciates the mediation efforts made by Turkey and Brazil.China attaches importance to and welcomes the agreement the two countries signed with Iran on supplying nuclear fuel for the research reactor in Tehran, he added.Davutoglu and Amorim briefed Yang on the efforts Turkey and Brazil have made concerning the Iran nuclear issue. They stressed that the deal the two countries reached with Iran is an important and positive step, which offers a new chance for the international community to peacefully solve the Iran nuclear issue through diplomatic means.Iran signed an accord with Turkey and Brazil in Tehran on Monday under which it will ship most of its low enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for the 20-percent uranium fuel needed for its Tehran reactor.

JINGHONG, Yunnan, March 27 (Xinhua) -- A governmental decision to go ahead with the sprinkling spree to celebrate a traditional festival has sparked controversy as a prolonged severe drought in southwest China has left tens of millions of people thirsty for water and crops withered.Netizens posted their harsh criticism after Duan Jinhua, head of the information office in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, confirmed in his microblog a week ago that celebrations for the New Year in the ethnic Dai calendar, featuring the sprinkling spree, will not be canceled despite the drought that is ravaging most parts of the province. A woman touches the base of a dry reservoir in the drought-hit Yi Autonomous County of Shilin, southwest China's Yunnan Province, March 25, 2010An online survey on the leading Internet portal Sina.com, showed that 52.3 percent of respondents backed the celebrations while 40 percent regarded it a waste of water. However, the government of the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture has decided to cancel official celebrations for the Water Sprinkling Festival, and leave local people free for their own choices. The Water Sprinkling Festival, which is also observed by several other ethnic groups in addition to Dai in Yunnan, falls on April 15 this year. The traditional festival was listed a state intangible heritage in 2006 and has become a chance for carnival.Actually, the official celebration in Xishuangbanna would be cut to two hours, three hours shorter than in previous years, and people are encouraged to splash less water, according to Duan. But the cut did not satisfy critics as the worst drought in a century has increasingly become a major national concern.
