SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wasting away in "Margaritaville" will soon be an option much closer to home. The site of downtown's Solamar Hotel will be renovated to make way for the Margaritaville Hotel, set to open in 2021. The hotel will include 235 guest rooms and plenty of signature Margaritaville food and drink concepts for visitors. The renovation and full conversion of the hotel is expected to cost about million.RELATED: Margaritaville Island Resort coming to San Diego“We are excited to announce our second hotel in affiliation with Margaritaville in San Diego,” said Jon Bortz, CEO of Pebblebrook Hotel Trust. “The downtown location in San Diego’s famed Gaslamp Quarter will provide convention goers, leisure guests and corporate travelers a unique experience in very close proximity to the city’s dining, entertainment and retail venues ... The Gaslamp Quarter property will be a terrific complement to our Margaritaville Island Resort San Diego which was announced last year.”By 2021, Paradise Point Resort & Spa on Vacation Isle Park in Mission Bay will also see a similar transformation into the Margaritaville Island Beach Resort. The resort will feature 462 casita-style guest rooms, themed-food and drinks, and family-friendly amenities. The Solamar Hotel was purchased in 2018 by Pebblebrook Hotel Trust. The hotel is located on 6th Ave., near Gaslamp District dining and entertainment and blocks from Petco Park and the convention center — adding to its appeal for its new image.“We are thrilled to collaborate on our second hotel with Pebblebrook, a team that values quality design, creativity and engaging guest experiences,” said John Cohlan, CEO of Margaritaville. “The iconic Gaslamp District, with its dynamic nightlife, signature events and proximity to the home of the Padres, fits perfectly with the Margaritaville lifestyle." 1859

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When it comes to essential business, his might be the most essential of them all.“So, this is a premixed disinfectant solution,” says Timothy Jackson, preparing to disinfect the breakroom at Truvian Sciences. After all, he’s the one keeping the most essential of businesses open.“We fight bacteria, and we bring quality to everything we touch,” adds Jackson.Jackson is the owner, founder, and CEO of Quality Touch Cleaning. A company, that according to its website, ‘Cleans beyond what the eye can see.’ And in the age of COVID, business is good.“I’ve actually been able to bring people who needed work a source of income and employment,” says Jackson. For an essential business like Truvian Sciences, a COVID outbreak and loss of employees would be a devastating blow to its progress.“People touch stuff all day long. I’m a TSA guy,” says Jackson wiping down cabinet handles.T-S-A is Jackson’s term for Touch Sensitive Areas. He knows where bacteria live and how to kill it. But how he learned these skills is a complicated journey.“It was like graduating from the school of hard knocks, literally,” says Jackson remembering. That school was at the California City Correctional Facility.“I was incarcerated on weapons charges,” says Jackson.Jackson joined an Oceanside gang when he was just 14 and was in prison by the age of 24. After years in and out, he chose a different path that would offer a new life. He joined a prison work program that taught him how to clean and disinfect hospitals with the highest standards.“Everything I know about cleaning, that’s going to be my ticket when I get home,” added Jackson thinking back to his final months in prison. And that’s when Jackson was introduced to Defy Ventures. Think Shark Tank for prisoners. He spent five months in an entrepreneurial training program, culminating in a pitch competition judged by Venture Capitalists and CEOs.Mark Bowles, a San Diego biotech and technology entrepreneur, was there to hear Jackson’s pitch.“To really make a difference, you have to do more than just put a sign in your yard or post memes. I think you have to actually go do something, and this program does make a big difference,” said Bowles. “You’re not with him very long before you realize this guy is shot out of a cannon.”After several pitch rounds, Jackson ended up placing second. And by coincidence, that very night, he was released from prison. Bowles and his team invested in Jackson’s startup. And when COVID hit, he was hired fulltime by Truvian.“He’s a full capitalist now,” adds Bowles with a smile. “He’s got stock options, and he’s working in a high-tech company.”To understand what a life-transformation this is for Jackson, you must first know the recidivism rate for prisoners after three to five years of release, according to the DOJ, is roughly 70%. Timothy has been out of prison for 3 ? years and continues to rebuild his life.“For somebody to be able to do that, it just spoke volumes to me,” says Lt. Taurino Valdovinos. No one is happier for Timothy more than Lt. Taurino Valdovinos of the Oceanside Police Department. He was Jackson’s initial arresting officer.“My first experience with Timothy was on the night we arrested him,” adds Valdovinos. Now the two speak together, offering a way out to troubled youth in Oceanside.“It’s my favorite part of the program,” says Valdovinos. “When we let the kids know our past and that bond we have, it is incredible the look on their faces.”For Jackson, it is a surreal moment every time.“I never thought that I would be asked by law enforcement to do such a thing,” says Jackson. “You won’t catch me on the other side of that recidivism number.” 3680

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across the country, there have been reports of racial discrimination against the Asian Pacific Islander community (API), including here in San Diego County.Erin Chew said she was wrapping up her grocery shopping trip in San Marcos when a man made eye contact with her and began speaking loudly about Asians."He just looked at me and started talking extremely loud to his partner or wife Looking at me saying Chinese people eat all this dirty stuff, eating bats and everything," Chew explained. She said the man also said, "I blame all the Chinese people for bringing this virus into this country."The incidents are not just happening out in public."My organization, SDS U'S Filipinx and Filipinx-American organization Andres Bonifacio Samahan was recently Zoombombed by a group of unknown individuals slandering us," said SDSU student Cristal Ami.Video from the Zoom meeting shows a group of unknown people yelling things like, "All you Asians have coronavirus!"In San Leandro, hate-filled notes were left on several homes, one read, "You have until May 23, Saturday at 10:30 AM to leave this country. No Asians allowed."An online reporting center called Stop AAPI Hate has been documenting the number of reported incidents against Asian Pacific Islanders across the country. As of April 29, it has received 1,711 reports, including 28 across San Diego County. The incidents range from verbal harassment and shunning, to physical assault. The San Diego Asian Pacific Islander (SD API) Coalition is working with San Diego Council President Georgette Gomez and Councilmember Monica Montgomery to put a resolution in front of the entire city council that will address the racial discrimination locally. The resolution proposes that the city should document and report hate crimes through Stop AAPI Hate and work with SD API to use the reported information to create targeted education and provide resources to those affected personally.SD API also said the city council would encourage the city's Human Relations Commission to address and investigate reported incidents. The city council will vote to adopt the resolution on June 2. 2150

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Marine's dreams are close to becoming a reality in the form of a massive property in Dulzura. It is not just for Kalani Creutzberg. His efforts to help others prompted an Animal Planet star to join the cause. Nate Schoemer was also a Marine. He was fresh out of high school with his blood type on his boots when he joined the invasion of Iraq.  "The first group was out there for three days and when they came back you could tell that they've just been through hell," Schoemer said. "This is hard for me to talk about," he said with tears in his eyes. It is especially hard to him to discuss it with civilians who often cannot comprehend the horrors of war. He lost some friends on that deployment in 2003."I could hear it from where I was," he started. "I mean I could hear them screaming," It haunted his heart on home soil., but he said his dog's love lifted his spirits. "I need to continue on this mission and helping others the way she helped me," he added. When he got out of the service he became a master dog trainer. He went on to host an Animal Planet show called "Rescue Dog to Super Dog". In it, he saved shelter dogs and turned them into service dogs for people in need. In episode one, he trained Bas for Creutzberg, which is how the two met. Creutzberg survived chilling deployments, but the fight for his life followed him home. "Before I knew it I was homeless," Creutzberg explained. "It was embarrassing, it was shameful," Bas gave him a sense of purpose. "When I was going there to rescue him he was actually the one rescuing me," Creutzberg added. Now, he is on a mission to give homeless vets a home. He plans to buy a property that is nearly 300 acres in Dulzura. "We're going to run our day to day operations very much like when we were back in the service," he explained. "There will be structure, we will work together…… the very things that a lot of us miss."It does not end there.  They will also rescue homeless dogs  about to be euthanized."[We'll] allow both the veterans and the dogs to grow relationships and start anew," he said. Schoemer believed in the Cammies and Canines Sanctuary so much, he joined the efforts. He plans to turn some of the dogs on death row into service dogs for vets. "Just being around Marines and veterans is a great thing,"  Schoemer said with a big grin. Their goal is to get back to tackling battles together. If that is not enough, man's best friend might just save someone else from being their own worst enemy. Creutzberg said they have raise about 0,000 of the 0,000 they need to purchase the property, so they are looking for investors.
