BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Tongan King Taufa'ahau Tupou V exchanged congratulatory messages on Sunday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations.     Hu said in the message that the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries on Nov. 2, 1998 opened a new chapter in bilateral relations.     Over the past 10 years, the bilateral ties have been continuously solidified and strengthened, he added.     Hu said the establishment and development of bilateral ties have brought real benefits to the two peoples and promoted the stability and development of the Pacific Islands Region.     China is willing to make joint efforts with Tonga, on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, to further strengthen bilateral exchanges and cooperation, boost the two peoples' friendship and understanding and lift China-Tonga friendly and cooperative ties to a higher level, thus making new contribution to the stability, development and progress of the two countries and the region as a whole, he said.     Tupou V said it was farsighted for former King Taufa'ahau TupouIV to make the decision to build diplomatic ties with China 10 years ago.     The development of the ties has benefited the two peoples greatly, he said, adding the Tongan government will continue to abide by the one-China policy.

ANKARA, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin arrived here Wednesday, starting an official goodwill visit to Turkey as guest of Koksal Toptan, speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly.     In a written statement delivered upon arrival at the airport, Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said both China and Turkey have a long history and splendid culture, and friendly exchanges between the two peoples date back to ancient times. GUANGZHOU, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- What China can do for the world is not to sell out its massive dollar reserve, but slightly increase its hold of the currency to give reasonable support to the U.S. effort to save its economy, said a senior economist here on Saturday.     It is indeed difficult for China to handle its huge forex reserve, as the U.S. currency has already depreciated 20 percent against the Chinese yuan, said Cheng Siwei, well-known economist at a financial forum held in Guangdong.     "China would suffer from losses if it sells off the dollar, so our strategy should be not to sell, but to slightly increase dollar reserve," said Cheng, also former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).     Cheng made the remarks amid increasing concern that China might use its forex reserve to finance its 4-trillion-yuan stimulus plan. China held 1.9 trillion dollars worth of forex reserve by September this year.     China "can only afford to do what is corresponding to its level of development and national power amid a global crisis," said Cheng.     "We should be prudent as to how to deal with our forex reserve," said Cheng, noting that China, despite its large size of economy, has its gross domestic product (GDP) accounting for only 6 percent of the world's total, and its per capita GDP ranking falling out of the top one hundred list.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The State Grid Corp. of China (SGCC), the country's biggest power supplier, said Sunday that its 2008 net profit fell almost 80 percent year on year due to natural disasters and higher power prices.     Net profit was 9.66 billion yuan (1.4 billion U.S. dollars), compared with 47.1 billion yuan in 2007.     Revenue rose 13.8 percent to 1.156 trillion yuan from a year earlier, the state-owned company noted.     The power distributor suffered more than 22 billion yuan (3.2 billion U.S. dollars) of direct economic loss in the worst winter weather in at least 50 years in southern China and the May 12 earthquake.     China raised the on-grid power price by 0.017 yuan per kwh in June and 0.02 yuan kwh in August to around 0.3 yuan per kwh on average to offset rising costs in power plants. But retail household power prices were capped amid concerns of a higher inflation.     The company said it planned to invest 83 billion yuan (12 billion U.S. dollars) in ultra-high voltage (UHV) power lines in 2009 and 2010 to make long-distance transmission more efficient.     China's power demand and installed power generating capacity would likely double to 7.4 trillion kwh and 1.47 billion kw respectively in 2020, it forecasted.

BEIJING, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- China is to promote the use of energy-efficient and new-energy vehicles in public sector in 13 cities, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said here Monday.     According to a joint statement by the MOF and the Ministry of Science and Technology, the central government will offer one-off subsidy for the purchase of mixed-power, electric and fuel-cell vehicles.     The statement said the subsidy will be decided by the gap between the prices of energy-efficient vehicles and automobiles powered by traditional fuel.     The program will be put into trial in public transport, taxi industry, postal and urban sanitary services in 13 cities including Beijing and Shanghai.     The program is aimed at facilitating the technology upgrading and structural optimization of the automobile industry, said the statement.     Local governments should also allocate funds for the building and maintenance of related facilities, said the statement.
