Justin Paperny has a unique career, one he helped invent after stock fraud landed him in federal prison a decade ago. "I made a lot of bad decisions, including lying to the FBI; I lied to my family, lied to my lawyers,” he says. Now, he's a self-described prison coach, teaching criminals the ropes of prison life. His expertise includes everything from how to get the best job in prison to living "under the radar," and doing it all safely. His clients usually include white collar defendants, doctors, lawyers, executives, he says. However, his new client is one of the major players in the college admission scandal. Paperny starts his work early in the legal process. "What we helped them do is obtain the shorter sentence, in the most favorable prison, and we do that by telling the judge who they are through their own efforts,” Paperny says. “Lawyers are great, but they aren’t paid to say great things about their clients.” Paperny does something some find more valuable later. He helps those about to walk the halls of prison have an easier time while serving time."There's a social order you have to understand that includes not speaking too loudly on the phone. Whenever you change clothes, you go into a shower stall because [they] don't want to see you naked. Not cutting the line to go to the chow hall. Every time you use the restroom, you wash your hands because you may go touch the handle to the TV room, and if you don't, you're going to get reprimanded and embarrassed in 40-50-60 people,” Paperny says. Another thing Paperny suggests is not having to associate with prison staff more than you need to. “Why? Something happened. You go complain to a guard. Twenty minutes later, that guard is searching someone's locker and another prisoner may say, ‘wasn't that the new prisoner talking to that guard?’” Paperny says. Most of Paperny’s clients have cash to pay the cost, which can be anywhere from ,000 to ,000. But some spend much less to learn the inside track of things like what type of food will be served and what are the showers like. Brian Cisco hired Paperny for ,000. Cisco turns himself in on April 16 for a two- year sentence after growing weed in Tennessee, where it’s not legal even at the state level. To critics who say Paperny is helping the rich essentially avoid the full punishment of prison, Paperny argues that isn’t the case. "We're not trying to buy them out of jail early,” he explains. “Let me tell you what we're trying to do. We're trying to show the judge that they are more than some bad decisions they made." Paperny says prison is neither as bad nor as good as some people think, but it is survivable. He says assaults don't happen like in the movies. Prison should be a time to think about making victims whole, taking responsibility and preparing for life after barbed wire, he says. "I hope that anyone who may be embroiled in the criminal justice system recognizes just because you go to prison, doesn't mean your life stops,” Paperny says. “Doesn't mean that it has to end. There's a whole lot that you can do there, and I want people to know that growth and better opportunities are possible." 3174

IDAHO — Newly released court documents are shedding light on the disappearance of Joshua "J.J." Vallow and Tylee Ryan, whose remains were found last week on Chad Daybell's property in Idaho.A probable cause affidavit for Daybell's arrest, filed June 10 in Madison County, outlines what led investigators to Daybell's home and ultimately to the remains of the missing children. This includes cell phone location data of the kids' uncle Alex Cox around the time of their disappearance, as well as text messages Daybell sent to his wife at the time.Tylee, 17, was last seen Sep. 8, 2019, at Yellowstone National Park, while J.J., 7, was last seen on the 22nd. The FBI's Cellular Analysis Survey Team discovered through Cox's cell phone GPS that he was at Daybell's home on Sep. 9 and 23.Cox, the brother of the kids' mother Lori Vallow Daybell, was with the two kids and their mom in Yellowstone that day, verified through photos. They returned home to Rexburg around 8:30 that night.Between 2:42 and 3:37 a.m. Sep. 9, Cox’s phone was at Lori and the kids’ apartment. He lived in a separate apartment in the same complex. They had moved there from Arizona on or around Sep. 1.“This is significant, not only because he was there in the middle of the night, but also because this is the only time in September he appears to go over to Lori’s between midnight and 6 a.m.,” the probable cause statement read.Later that same morning, GPS data indicates that Cox went to Chad Daybell’s home in Salem — specifically outside near the east end of a barn on the property. He appeared to have been on the property from 9:21 to 11:39 a.m. The FBI also discovered text messages between Tammy and Chad Daybell, who were married at the time. Tammy died on Oct. 19, 2019, and Chad married Lori just weeks later. On Sep. 9 at 11:53 a.m., Chad sent a text message to Tammy that said:“Well, I've had an interesting morning! I felt I should bum all of the limb debris by the fire pit before it got too soaked by the coming storms. While I did so, I spotted a big racoon along the fence. I hurried and got my gun, and he was still walking along. I got close enough that one shot did the trick. He is now in our pet cemetery. Fun times!”Investigators spoke to Tammy’s sister about a week before serving a search warrant on Daybell’s property, who confirmed that the couple had a “pet cemetery” on their land. She also confirmed its location to investigators on an aerial photograph. The location was near a firepit where Cox’s phone location was pinged.Cox’s phone was again pinged to Daybell’s property on Sep. 23, the day after J.J. was last seen.J.J. was last seen on Sep. 22 at his home by two of Lori’s friends who were visiting. The next morning, the friends asked Lori where J.J. was, and she told them Cox had come and taken him after he was “acting like a zombie” — which the friends also say Lori had said about Tylee several months before.Cox’s cell phone was again located at Daybell’s property on the morning of Sep. 23 from 9:55 a.m. to 10:12 a.m. The location was specifically pinged to a pond on the northern edge of Daybell’s property.Investigators also noted that Cox was at Daybell’s home two other times: Sep. 6 and Sep. 25, these times inside Daybell’s house and not at the firepit or pond. After discovering this information, investigators obtained and executed a search warrant on Daybell’s property on June 9. They dug in the two locations where Cox’s phone location showed him on the two days after each child’s disappearance and found both their remains.Lori and Chad are both in jail on million bond. Lori is charged with desertion and nonsupport of her children, while Chad is charged with destruction or concealment of evidence.Cox died in December of a heart attack. An 80-year-old Colorado woman received a surprise welcome home parade Monday after battling COVID-19 for months.Virginia Herrera was diagnosed in April and since then she's been hospitalized twice, spending time at a rehab facility."Every day I was trying to wake up and do everything they wanted me to do. It took a lot of effort, but I did it," Virginia Herrera said. The cancer survivor came down with bilateral pneumonia while battling COVID-19. Doctors had to put her in a medically induced coma for 20 days. She also had to undergo a tracheotomy after using a ventilator to help with her breathing."Oh my gosh, I've been going through ventilators, and a trec. A lot of medication and treatments," Virginia Herrera said. Before she was diagnosed with the virus, she worked as a Nutritional Manager for Fremont County Head Start for more than 50 years. A job that her family says brought her joy. Dozens of her coworkers filled a Fremont County Head Start bus to participate in the welcome home parade. Neighbors stood on the street corners in support."We feel it's a miracle that Virginia has lived through this, 97 days and 60 something days on a ventilator," said Rick Archuletta, a neighbor. "We were praying for her, hoping she would come through OK and Gloria, her daughter, has kept us up to date on Facebook."While she was in the hospital, her family was unable to visit her. They say God and the power of prayer got them through this difficult time."Our grandma is a woman of God and that is the main reason that got all of our family through this. Prayer and God, it was a true miracle," said Andrea Herrera, Virginia's granddaughter. "This is grandma's house, it's where we all come by to have Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. To us, it's our house as much as it is grandma's," said Dionisio Herrera, Virginia's grandson. "She always has the door open for us, always gives us a full belly to eat. We just love our grandma, all of us do."While she's happy to be surrounded by friends and family, she has a special message for those in the community. "Wear a mask and be careful," she said. My dad has only ever liked one video game - Galaga. He and my mom used to go play it on date nights when they were newly-weds and broke. This year, me and my siblings all pitched in to get him a Galaga arcade machine for Christmas. I don't think I've ever seen him more excited to get a present! 311
