HAWAII (KGTV) -- The United States Geological Survey is reporting that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 struck Hawaii Thursday afternoon.According to the USGS, the quake happened about 1:30 p.m., 11 miles south of Fern Acres on the Big Island.The earthquake was just one of hundreds of earthquakes that have swarmed the island, prompting concerns that Kilauea Volcano could erupt.The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory indicated that a volcanic eruption was possible but not imminent. Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes.The series of earthquakes came after a collapse of a crater floor of Pu?u ?ō?ō, which is a volcanic cone in the eastern rift zone of the Kīlauea Volcano.Since that collapse, about 250 earthquakes were reported in the area into Tuesday evening, according to Hawaiian Volcano Observatory status report.Check out the map below to see the area near where the earthquake hit: 931

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — As we get closer to a potential COVID-19 vaccine approval in the U.S., doctors are hoping the public actually gets the vaccine once it’s available.Recent polling from Pew Research shows about 60% of Americans say they would ‘definitely’ or ‘probably’ get a COVID-19 vaccine.Local infectious disease doctors tell WXMI that that number will be just enough to put a serious dent in infections, but the more immunity, the better.Dr. Andrew Jameson, the Division Chief for Infectious Disease at Mercy Health said, “I am optimistic for the first time in a while.”Dr. Jameson added that he’s seeing a bit of light at the end of a very long tunnel with a COVID vaccine approval potentially just days away.“I can tell you right now from what I’ve seen, from an efficacy standpoint, from a safety standpoint, I am going to be definitely getting the vaccine personally and I have zero issues of giving my family the vaccine when it’s available,” Dr. Jameson said.With two COVID-19 vaccines on deck for approval with the FDA, one from Pfizer and one from Moderna, Dr. Jameson is hoping that people feel confident in getting it once they’re able.“If we get about 60% of people immunized and then we also have the natural immunity out there giving us a little bit of extra help, I think that is going to be a huge impact,” Dr. Jameson said.Dr. Jameson said he also understands that people may be wary of such a new vaccine.“Unfortunately, we’ve had a fair amount of skepticism in the community about vaccines before all of this, and now in the setting of this being moved forward pretty quickly, I think there’s probably a little bit of a natural skepticism,” he said.He said the biggest reason he’s heard for not wanting the vaccine is that things are just moving too fast.“Before this, the fastest that we ever had a vaccine get from the beginning to the end to where people were getting it, was four years, and this one is going to be about 10 months,” Dr. Jameson said.Dr. Jameson called the trial and manufacturing process of both companies vaccines, ‘the most transparent’ he’s ever seen and trusts the FDA to leave no stone unturned before approval.“They get all the notes from the doctors, they get all the patient encounter visits from the sites that are doing the vaccine, so they actually get all of the raw data and re-interpret it and re-analyze it themselves for efficacy, so they don’t just believe what the drug manufacturers tell them,” he explained.He wants people to also understand potential vaccine side effects, to make sure they come back for their second dose. Grocery workers continue to be on the front lines during the pandemic.United Way and Kendall-Jackson are now teaming up to get grocery workers more help through a national relief fund they've created.“What we have seen across the county in other disasters natural disasters is that initially there's this outpouring of support and people want to donate, but then it really starts to wane and lag just as the needs are starting to get even bigger,” said Suzanne McCormick, U.S. President of United Way Worldwide.The Grocery Worker's Relief Fund will be available to anyone currently employed by a grocery store.The fund will be giving out 0 per person on a gift card. Anyone who applies will also be connected with the 211 social services helplines in their area to see if they have other needs.United Way says housing insecurity is one of the top issues people are calling 211 about right now.Mental health has also become a much bigger concern among the people who are calling.“While people might call for financial assistance our call specialists who are trained as they start to enter into dialogue, they do discover that there's more there that the person might have anxiety,” said McCormick. “They might be in a domestic violence situation or have very serious mental health issues.”Grocery workers can start applying for the relief fund on October 1 on the United Way website. HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — A woman trying to protect her dog was killed by an alligator who pulled her into a lagoon at a private South Carolina resort Monday, authorities said.Cassandra Cline, 45, of Hilton Head Island, was walking the dog along a residential area of Sea Pines Resort when she was attacked, state and local officials said. The 8-foot (2.5-meter) alligator was later found and killed, said David Lucas, a spokesman for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources."She was walking the dog near the lagoon and the alligator came out of the water and tried to get the dog," Lucas said. "The lady tried to rescue the dog and a maintenance worker ran over to help."Both were trying to save the dog, but the alligator dragged the woman into the water, he said.The dog was unharmed."It's common practice when we have an aggressive alligator like that, we put it down, but it will take some take some time to confirm it's the right alligator," said Capt. Robert McCullough of the Department of Natural Resources.Alligator attacks on humans are extremely rare, Lucas said.Since 1976, there have only been about 20 attacks on people in the state, he said. Until 2016, none of those attacks had been fatal. In 2016, a 90-year-old woman wandered away from a Charleston assisted living facility and was found dead in a pond.Blake Smith, 34, was leaving his house Monday morning when he saw police cars and firetrucks in the neighborhood."I waited for about 30 minutes, then I started hearing rumors about what happened down the road from here," Smith told The Island Packet newspaper. "It's odd because this is the first time we've heard about an aggressive alligator around a human in the five years that we've been living here."Smith said that at times, alligators have been spotted in yards or pools, but Sea Pines quickly removed those animals."They do a good job. This is just a sad incident," he said.
