LONGMONT, Colo. – Mara Pawlowski has had a passion for horses her entire life. “I drive to the ranch and my heart is beating so hard I’m so excited,” Pawlowski said. But when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 20 years ago, riding a horse took on a whole new meaning. “It’s hard for me to walk, but Elizabeth, I can ride a horse. And the self-confidence you get from that is pretty amazing.” For nearly eight years, Pawlowski has been taking therapeutic horseback riding lessons at 502

DENVER, Colorado — Cloud seeding can provide between 5% and 15% more snow to help ski areas, farmers and watersheds in the state, supporters say. "These observations show us that cloud seeding does work," said University of Colorado researcher Katja Friedrich, who has studied cloud seeding inside and outside of a laboratory. She worked with scientists who flew planes near moisture-rich clouds and injected them with silver iodide, a substance that causes moisture to become heavy and fall to the ground as snow. On a radar image, she pointed outlines of snow that later formed. The visible lines matched the pattern the cloud seeding plane had flown in the sky. Cloud seeding in Colorado aims to produce more snow, not rain. Friedrich said it's difficult to quantify how much additional snow is created. Cloud seeding doesn't make more clouds, but supporters believe it gets more snow out of an approaching storm. Planes can be used to seed approaching storm clouds. Ground seeders use propane to heat the air and also used in the mountains and Western Slope. Silver iodide is then added to the warmed air as it rises. The moisture, already in the clouds, bonds to the silver iodide. When it becomes heavy, it falls to the ground as snow. Cloud seeding has been happening for about 70 years in Colorado but is slowed in years when there is heavy snowfall. Cloud seeders operated during the 2018-2019 winter but slowed in places where significant snowpack accumulated. A man who owns a cloud seeding company on the Western Slope said the technology works well. Cloud seeder's viewpoint Cloud seeders dot highpoints in Colorado from the west to central part of the state. Ski areas hire Eric Hjermstad's Western Weather Consultants company to cloud seed early in the season, so there's more natural snow before opening day. He continues seeding until mid-April. He showed off a cloud seeder located at a recreation site north of Leadville. He can remote start the seeder, turn on the propane flame and add the silver iodide. 2040

For 52 years, Tom Hollett has been scanning the water as a lifeguard. But being a lifeguard in Vancouver, Canada means he also keeps watch over frozen water. “I'd rather make 10,000 rescues in the warm ocean than one here,” Hollett says of the frozen lake. This part of Canada, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the North Shore Mountains, it’s the only part of the country where the average temperature stays above freezing, even in the winter. So, when the lakes start to freeze over, it’s a novelty. The lake attracts visitors, who are often tempted to tread on the thin ice, often times with their pets. “There’s people that don't understand the ice, so they just figure they can walk on it,” Hollett says. When temperatures are colder, as they have been this week, the City of Vancouver Parks and Recreation department dubs a few of their summer lifeguards, "iceguards." "Lifeguards are always scanning and keeping an eye out, so that's what our iceguards do,” Sean Healy with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation says. “When they come out to iceguard, they actually do a walking patrol around the lake. They also keep binocs close at hand.”Hollett says he’s had to make ice rescues before for people’s pets. “Believe it or not, I’ve saved many dogs,” he recalls. “I grabbed their collar like this, reach out and bring ‘em up in the ice." 1369

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Robert Wiggins is studying agriculture business and education. It’s a path he didn’t expect for himself because he never saw ranchers or farmers who looked like him. “Growing up in west Texas, I didn’t even like ag when I was a kid. It was a white man’s game, and we weren’t allowed to play,” Wiggins said. However, as Wiggins' family grew, he started to realize the importance of good nutrition and his passion for agriculture took root. “I had kids and community members that needed this. Our community – the African American community – suffers a lot from diabetes, cancers, diseases that could be controlled by eating habits. And so, when we got into this work, it wasn’t about the people that were gonna be working around us, but the people we were gonna be serving.” So he started classes at 834

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie remains hospitalized, but called a New Jersey newspaper editor from his hospital bed Monday morning, reportedly sounding raspy but not coughing — and fiery as ever. The former governor has struggled with asthma all his life, and announced on Twitter Saturday that he would check himself in to Morristown Medical Center on the advice of his doctors.Christie was seen outdoors in the White House Rose Garden hugging people without a mask last week. He also came in close contact with President Donald Trump and his staff when helping to prepare him for last week's debate."No one was wearing masks in the room when we were prepping the president during that period of time," Christie told Good Morning America. "The group was about five or six people in total."Monday, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy wished his predecessor a speedy recovery."He and I have had private communications," said Murphy. "He is in our prayers and he knows that we're here for him."The state is currently working to contact trace 206 people who attended a Trump fundraiser at his private golf club in Bedminster last week. Trump and his staff were there just hours before the president announced that he'd tested positive for COVID-19.The New Jersey Attorney General is now investigating whether the fundraiser violated state rules on social distancing. Many in attendance did not wear masks. But the Republican National Committee has insisted that face masks were provided and the event was in compliance. At Murphy's afternoon press briefing, he said the president and his staff acted recklessly by coming to New Jersey, knowing they had come in contact with someone who tested positive.“The actions leading up to and during this event have put lives at risk,” Murphy said. Some of the event attendees flew in from other parts of the country and have now scattered."This never should have happened," said the governor.
