Experts say the finalization of a COVID-19 vaccine is in our near future. Dr. William Moss is a professor of epidemiology and the executive director of the International Vaccine Access Center at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.“Remarkable progress has been made in the development of COVID-19 vaccines,” Dr. William Moss said.He says it typically takes five to 10 years to develop a vaccine, but with so much money and attention going toward COVID-19, he believes it’s likely we’ll have a vaccine by the end of the year.“I’m pretty confident that there will be a vaccine that will have an emergency-use authorization in the United States by the end of 2020,” Dr. Moss said.According to Dr. Moss, of the dozens if not hundreds of vaccine candidates in clinical trials, there are three vaccine candidates that have reached phase three. Phase three is when tens of thousands of volunteers test the vaccine to make sure it’s safe and effective.As of this week, we have optimistic news regarding phase-three efficacy results from biopharmaceutical company Pfizer – which has been collaborating with German company BioNTech.“Early preliminary results suggests that their vaccine is 90% or so effective in preventing mild to moderate or severe disease.”If the 90% efficacy data holds up after follow ups from participants in late November, Dr. Moss says he expects the FDA will rigorously review the data and approve the vaccine for distribution. That means health care workers and other high-priority groups would get the vaccine in December of this year, or early next year.“Pfizer says that they could have close to 50 million doses by the end of this year," Dr. Moss said. "Now remember their vaccine – as a number of the vaccine candidates do – requires two doses per individual. So, 50 million doses allows you to vaccinate about 25 million people.”Dr. Moss says the unprecedented investment in vaccine manufacturing will make it possible for the vaccine to be distributed so quickly. However, there are still quite a few logistical challenges since he says the Pfizer vaccine requires extreme cold temperatures as low as minus 117 degrees Fahrenheit.“So we need warehouses to store the vaccine that have freezers that can maintain that cold, we need transportation systems – planes, trucks – that can deliver the vaccine and keep it cold. And then at the site of distribution, we need to be able to keep these vaccines cold.”Therefore, he says it will likely take a lot longer for the general population to get the vaccine. He’s guessing not until the middle of 2021. Of course, the idea of saving lives with the help of a vaccine is very promising, but he says the greatest misconception is that we can go back to "normal" as soon as it’s distributed.“That by no means is going to indicate that we can go back to our pre-pandemic life," Dr. Moss said. "We will not know whether these vaccines stop transmission and we’re going to still need to wear masks, to wash our hands and physically distance even when vaccines become available.”Time and patience will be vital as we wait to see the long-term impacts of the vaccine in this pandemic. 3168

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The Escondido Union High School District is celebrating a grant renewal of over million to go towards helping students.The ASSETs grant comes from the federal government and helps funds after-school programs and other support services for students and parents.The district has received this funding for the past 10 years and schools have put it to good use.San Pasqual High School has created unique clubs like ukulele, welding, robotics, and mountain biking. The money also funds academic tutoring as well as programs like Drivers Ed.Everything created through the ASSETs grant money is free for students. "I can tell you it has literally transformed the experience for hundreds of students, hundreds," said San Pasqual High School Principal Martin Casas.Up until last week, next year's grant money wasn't a sure thing. Casas says the district worried the money would be cut from the federal budget.ASSETs grant schools like San Pasqual were trying to figure out which programs they'd have to cut if the funding didn't come through. Casas estimates they would have had to cut half of their programs.But now that the funding is secured, schools can look forward to creating even more programs.They'll receive 0,000 each year for the next five years.Some new programs in the works include building skateboards, music production, and mariachi.In addition to San Pasqual High, Orange Glen, Escondido and Valley High Schools will be getting ASSETs funding.The district says over 75 percent of its students qualify for free and reduced lunch, so these programs are vital.  1618

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman was injured following a high-speed pursuit that ended with a rollover crash in Escondido Friday.A California Highway Patrol officer taking part in a saturation patrol for the Labor Day weekend saw the woman speeding on north Interstate 15 and Mission Road about noon, the CHP said.The woman exited and got back on the freeway in a stolen Toyota Corolla, heading south at speeds up to 100 miles an hour, said officers.Eventually, the woman crashed as she tried to to take the westbound SR-78 ramp. The car rolled over on the freeway embankment.CHP officers said the woman, who is in her 40s, was not wearing a seat belt. She was not thrown from the car.Paramedics found the woman unconscious and took her to the hospital.Alcohol and drugs were factors in the crash, officers said. 822

(KGTV) - City leaders voted Wednesday night to support the federal lawsuit against California's sanctuary laws. The Escondido City Council voted 4-1in favor of backing the litigation. In response to the discussion, immigrant communities in Escondido believe their leaders are out of touch."What's being discussed inside chambers is not representative of the values in my community,” said Lilian Serrano.Escondido Mayor Sam Abed, on the other hand, believes coordination with local authorities and ICE is critical to keeping Escondido safe. ENGLEWOOD, Colo -- Englewood School District confirmed it is investigating a "fight club" after a video on social media from one of its middle schools made its way into the public light. Scripps station KMGH in Denver received a video of two students at Englewood Middle School fighting, and that parent is concerned her child might be next. According to that parent, who wishes to remain anonymous, there are "fight club social media pages" with videos from fights at Englewood Middle School. One of those videos was recorded on April 5. The video shows one student assaulting another, according to officials at Englewood Schools. The district said the student responsible is now facing disciplinary and legal action. Englewood Police Department sent a statement that one girl was issued a summons for assault. KMGH was not able to find the social media pages, but the district confirmed it is aware of the social media groups and are trying to find those who are responsible for those pages to hold them accountable. The mother who contacted KMGH said through text that those social media pages spread that her child may be the next target and she's "petrified to send her back to school." The district said it will be increasing its security presence at the Englewood Campus as a result.  1349
