BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police will begin a special four-month campaign to crack down on the production and use of counterfeit automobile license plates on Thursday.Police around the country will target trade in fake license plates, registration papers and other license plate-related crime, the Ministry of Public Security said Wednesday in a statement on its website.Violators sometimes forge license plates for military and government vehicles to enjoy privileges like free expressway charges.Some drivers use stickers to cover their license plates to cheat police.The campaign will begin June 10 and finish Oct. 10.Police carried out similar campaigns during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the National Day holidays in 2009 to create better traffic conditions.Statistics with the ministry show police nationwide seized about 267,000 counterfeit license plates in the 2008 campaign and 183,000 fake plates in the 2009 campaign.

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Experts from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan Sunday started their third round of talks in Beijing to pave the way for a long-awaited pact to boost cross-Strait economic ties.During the talks, the two sides will discuss the main content of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), and goods and services trade in the "early harvest program."The ECFA is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer.The first round of talks took place in January in Beijing, and the second two months later in Taipei.Fan Liqing, spokeswoman of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, told a press conference Saturday that negotiations had made pronounced progress and were approaching completion.Yang Yi, another spokesman of the same organization, was reported as saying in March that the two sides should work together to complete the pact in June.Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), said on April 2 the SEF also hoped to see the signing of the ECFA by the end of June.

GUANGZHOU, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and the lives of more than one million people were disrupted after Chanthu, the third typhoon of the season, made landfall at the coastal area in south China' s Guangdong Province Thursday noon.Two pedestrians were killed by walls that blew over in strong gales accompanying Chanthu after it went ashore at Wuchuan City at around 1:45 p.m., according to officials at the provincial flood control headquarters.Chanthu also brought torrential rains to several cities in Guangdong.As of 8 p.m., more than 1.35 million people in 20 counties or cities in Guangdong were affected and 2,915 houses collapsed in the rainstorms and strong gales, with economic losses estimated at 2.2 billion yuan (about 324 million U.S. dollars), according to statistics from the headquarters.Photo taken on July 22, 2010 shows fishing boats anchored at Shapa Harbor in Yangjiang City, southern China's Guangdong Province. BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday made directives urging rescuers to "exhaust all means possible" to save miners trapped in an exploded colliery in central Henan Province.A total of 72 miners were trapped after explosives went off at the powder magazine of the Xingdong No.2 Mine in Weidong District of Pingdingshan City at about 1:40 a.m. At least 46 people were reported dead.
