The invasive species has been wreaking havoc on the ecology and causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage each year. In recent months, they’ve even become deadly. Some wildlife removal experts are using heavy ammunition and an aerial advantage to contend with the wild animals. “Heli-Bacon flies around in helicopters and we kill feral pigs with machine guns,” explained Heli-Bacon CEO Chris Britt. Ohio has been added to the Ohio Department of Health’s COVID-19 Travel Advisory map, meaning the state is recommending Ohioans avoid traveling to Ohio, and those entering Ohio after traveling from Ohio are advised to self-quarantine in Ohio for 14 days.Obviously, outside of The Matrix or a Christopher Nolan movie, this is physically impossible. To be clear, you are free to move about the state, but the ODH recommends staying home except for necessary trips.The ODH included this statement on this week's travel advisory: "This is the first week since April where Ohio’s positivity for COVID-19 has increased above 15%. The state has seen record levels of cases, deaths, and hospitalizations in the past week, and all Ohioans can help to limit the spread and impact of this virus. This includes recommendations to stay at home except for necessary trips for supplies, consistent mask-wearing when around others, and frequent hand washing. Together we can help stop the spread of COVID-19."Ohio was added to its own travel advisory map because, as ODH states, the 7-day rolling average positivity rate for COVID-19 tests in the state rose above 15% for the first time since April this week. Any state with a positivity rate above 15% is put on the map, and the ODH recommends against travel to those states with high positivity.The positivity rate is an indicator of how much COVID-19 there is in a community, ODH states, and comes from state-level aggregate data from The COVID Tracking Project. For 52 years, Tom Hollett has been scanning the water as a lifeguard. But being a lifeguard in Vancouver, Canada means he also keeps watch over frozen water. “I'd rather make 10,000 rescues in the warm ocean than one here,” Hollett says of the frozen lake.This part of Canada, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the North Shore Mountains, it’s the only part of the country where the average temperature stays above freezing, even in the winter. So, when the lakes start to freeze over, it’s a novelty. The lake attracts visitors, who are often tempted to tread on the thin ice, often times with their pets. “There’s people that don't understand the ice, so they just figure they can walk on it,” Hollett says. When temperatures are colder, as they have been this week, the City of Vancouver Parks and Recreation department dubs a few of their summer lifeguards, "iceguards." "Lifeguards are always scanning and keeping an eye out, so that's what our iceguards do,” Sean Healy with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation says. “When they come out to iceguard, they actually do a walking patrol around the lake. They also keep binocs close at hand.”Hollett says he’s had to make ice rescues before for people’s pets. “Believe it or not, I’ve saved many dogs,” he recalls. “I grabbed their collar like this, reach out and bring ‘em up in the ice." 1369
