Reopening schools and resuming youth sports, playdates and other activities has led to a sharp increase in the number of American children testing positive for COVID-19, according to health authorities.The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association released a report Tuesday showing children, ages 0 to 17, make up about 10 percent of all cumulative U.S. COVID-19 cases. Children were just 2 percent of total cases in April.As of September 24, more than 624,000 children have tested positive for the coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic. With the U.S. reporting just below 6 million cases total, that means roughly 10.5 percent of all cases are children.More than 74,000 new cases of COVID-19 among children were reported in the two weeks between Sept. 10 and 24, according to the CDC and AAP. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday that the incidence of COVID-19 in school-age children began rising in early September as many youngsters returned to their classrooms.“These rising numbers concern us greatly, as the children’s cases reflect the increasing virus spread in our communities,” said American Academy of Pediatrics President Sally Goza, MD, FAAP in a statement. “While children generally don’t get as sick with the coronavirus as adults, they are not immune and there is much to learn about how easily they can transmit it to others.Over the last several weeks, children have accounted for between 12-16 percent of all new coronavirus cases weekly.Children do appear to have a lower fatality rate. The study shows that roughly 0.01 percent of children who test positive for the coronavirus have died from it.The AAP says these numbers may be low because of inconsistencies in reporting and testing. “The data are limited because the states differ in how they report the data, and it is unknown how many children have been infected but not tested,” they state.The number of children tested compared to the number of all tests being done in this country has remained steady since April of between 5-to-7 percent, according to the CDC.Earlier this month, the CDC released information that the average age of patients testing positive for COVID-19 has dropped to 38 years old in August as more younger Americans contract the coronavirus.The study from CDC also stated about 20 percent of COVID-19 cases are now patients in their 20s. 2407

Quick thinking and response by Independence, Ohio police officer Andrew March, made all the difference in the world for a woman police say was attempting to take her own life, on the I-480 bridge on April 20.Officer March responded at 9:30 AM, after getting information from Cleveland police, that the woman could be on the bridge.Independence police dash camera video shows Officer March quickly jumping out of his cruiser, and then jumping up to grab the woman's leg, pulling her down to safety."I was just thinking get there fast, and if she's climbing up, make sure she gets back down safely on the right side," said March."I just grabbed whatever is available and start pulling and hopefully and would get her to safety."March credited higher safety fencing, installed along the I-480 bridge by the Ohio Department of Transportation two months ago, with giving him more time to get to the scene."It definitely made a difference, if it would have been the old fencing, she probably would have made it over the top," said March.Independence Police Chief Michael Kilbane told News 5, he and police chief's in Valley View and Garfield Heights, started working with State Representative Marlene Anielski (R-Walton Hills) last year to get the safety fencing improved."She really lobbied ODOT hard to get this done, and actually made them make it a priority," said Kilbane.Kilbane praised ODOT and said he hopes the safety fencing posted at other northeast Ohio bridges will be examined in the future."Again it if can just prevent one of them, or buy some time for somebody to get there and talk them out of it, or help them.  I think it's well worth the investment," said Kilbane.ODOT told News 5 it will install a 10-foot safety fence along the Lorain Road bridge, over the Rocky River, later this summer.Meanwhile, March told News 5 he doesn't feel like a hero, that he was just doing his job.Chief Kilbane disagrees."Andrew March is a hero," said Kilbane."I know he's a modest kid, but he saved a life today." 2054

Refugees who have waited years to get to the United States sometimes arrive only to find out their life's work does not translate to opportunities in America.Pima County Public Libraries have a unique approach to helping those who are new to the city and country.Librarians are helping immigrants and refugees from all over the world adapt to U.S. Culture by helping their degrees earned overseas recognized here in America.Henri Nzeyimana was born in Burundi. In late-April 2015, political unrest took over the East African country. It resulted in an attempted coup d'état. Hundreds of civilians were killed, and thousands of peaceful political demonstrators were tortured.Nzeyimana is an asylum seeker that has been in the U.S. for three years. "Every time you have to leave your country and go to another country — not because of your choice but because you're not able to enjoy freedom — it hurts," Nzeyimana explained. He decided to move to Tucson to find work —  task that he initially thought was impossible."To hear that you've been at school for more than 10 years, working for more than 20 and then all of a sudden you have to start fresh, that was traumatizing," he said.  However, that changed when he met Citizenship Librarian Mary Givins at the Eckstrom-Columbus Library. Since he has two masters degrees from two different European universities, Givins thought if he could get a hold of his transcripts he can get at least a substitute teacher degree in America.After some thinking, that's exactly what he did."I showed him the process for getting his degree evaluated, translated from French and then he had that paper submitted to the department of education," Givins said.Givins says immigrants and refugees don't realize that the degrees they receive from their countries often transfer to the U.S. She says all it takes is a lot of steps to get them started. "If people have access to their transcripts from their university, then something can be done," she explained. All the Pima County Public Library branches offer the "Job Help Program," twice a week. President Trump spoke to reporters Wednesday following Tuesday's Midterm Elections.Trump's began with prepared remarks speaking about Republicans wins in the Senate, calling his party's performance "historic."President Trump also made a point to call out Republicans who did not embrace his agenda and lost races, including Rep. Mia Love (R-Utah) who is currently losing to Democrat Ben McAdams."Mia Love gave me no love. And she lost. Race favorite Justify, ridden by Mike Smith, won the 144th Kentucky Derby on a sloppy track at Louisville's Churchill Downs on Saturday.Justify is trained by Bob Baffert, who now has five Derby wins.Good Magic finished second, just ahead of Audible.
