CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A Florida family says they were recently targeted by a terrifying kidnapping scam.Katie and Steve Watson live in Coral Springs, Florida and want to warn families about the crime.Katie tells WPTV that she received a call on Monday from a number she didn’t recognize. On the line she heard a whimpering child, then a mysterious man say he had kidnapped Katie’s daughter, Chloe."All of a sudden a man's voice came on the line, and he said, 'Katie I have your daughter. She's in the back of my van,' " Watson told WPTV on Tuesday.Katie said she quickly hung up, feeling in her gut that it was scam. "That's really part of what gave me the chills was somebody calling me by my name," said Watson. "That was unsettling."Katie says she figured it was a scam, but then got a bad feeling when she checked her daughter’s location through her phone's GPS.It initially said her daughter was at Westglades Middle School in Parkland, which Chloe attends. But then the GPS suddenly jumped to another location in Parkland.Upon further investigation, the Watsons found that her daughter was indeed at school, and more importantly, safe."I got chills all over my body and I was like, OK, I know that was a scam but that's like every parent's worst nightmare is to hear your kid has been kidnapped," said Watson.The FBI calls this a virtual kidnapping scam and says it’s evolved over the years and become more sophisticated.In the calls, a crook says he’s kidnapped your loved one and demands money in exchange for their safe return.In the Watsons' case, however, the scam was taken to a frightening new level with the use of a whimpering child on the line.The FBI offers these tips so you don’t become a victim: 1748
CNS note: EEOC identified store as located in La Mesa, but store is actually in San Carlos neighborhood of San Diego.SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Albertsons has agreed to pay 0,000 to settle a discrimination lawsuit alleging the manager of an Albertsons supermarket in the San Carlos neighborhood harassed employees for speaking Spanish on the job, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Tuesday.The EEOC's lawsuit alleged a store manager was allowed to harass employees at the Lake Murray Boulevard Albertsons in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on national origin.According to the complaint filed in San Diego federal court, employees were not allowed to speak Spanish even while on breaks, or when conversing with Spanish-speaking customers.In addition to the monetary damages, which the EEOC said will go to "a class of affected employees," Albertsons has agreed to review and possibly revise its discrimination policies and procedures and provide training to employees and managers, with an emphasis on language discrimination.Alberstons will also be required to submit reports to the EEOC and keep records demonstrating compliance with a consent decree settling the suit."The EEOC commends Albertsons for agreeing to meaningful and comprehensive measures to correct this situation," said Anna Park, regional attorney for the EEOC's Los Angeles District, whose jurisdiction includes San Diego County."It is important for employers to train employees and make clear that their use of language in the workplace should not impact one group over another."Christopher Green, director of the EEOC's San Diego office, said, "Given the nature of an increasingly diverse workforce, employers should be mindful that the imposition of restrictive language policies may not comply with federal law." 1864

Community Health Centers that care for hundreds of thousands of low-income San Diegans are bracing for deep cuts. Congress has to act by Sept. 30 to maintain the funds to the centers, or services will start to decrease."This conversation is, do you have a doctor when you need one, who will see you?" said Vernita Todd, Vice President of Health Center Partners of Southern California, an association of 17 health centers in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside counties. The centers are concerned about million of federal money that Congress has yet to renew. The money goes to lower the cost of services like primary care, vaccinations, cancer screenings and physicals. It can help turn a visit that would normally cost 0 into a visit. "If they can't afford it, does that mean they'll forego treatment? Will they forego going to the doctor? Will they skip vaccinations for their children?" Todd said. Earlier this month, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY, introduced a bill to continue the funding for community health centers. It has 13 bipartisan supporters. Her spokesman says she's exploring different ways to move the legislation forward. Todd says she's not concerned the bill wouldn't pass. She just wants it to come up for a vote. But she's worried Congress isn't paying attention to the health center needs because it's focused on issues like Hurricane recovery, repealing the Affordable Care Act, and Immigration. She says the centers would start taking hits Oct. 1, when money for a program that essentially gets doctors to health centers dries up.Then, on Jan. 1, they would lose the biggest lump sum, which could lead to layoffs, closures, and fewer services. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - For the first time, a local coaching legend is speaking out, 5 months after he was banned from the campus of Coronado High.Retired water polo coach Randy Burgess is accused in a complaint of molesting a former middle school student.A mural of Burgess remains over the pool his water polo teams has used during his 3 decades of coaching, which includes nearly 20 section championships for high school boys' and girls' teams. Three of his players have competed in the Olympics.It's a legacy now in danger."My feeling is beyond frustration. A lot of hurtful things have happened," said Burgess.In May, the former middle school student - now 18 - filed a complaint with Coronado unified.In it, the teen claims during the 7th grade while playing for a club polo team that shared the pool with Burgess' teams, Burgess hugged, kissed, and eventually raped the child, in places like bathrooms and Burgess' car.The school district removed Burgess from the classroom in April, before denying the claim in May.Burgess says his attorney learned the District Attorney's office has declined to prosecute, but 10News is still working to confirm that."My immediate response was this was a case of mistaken identity. My coaching and teaching career never paralleled with this this individual," said Burgess, who denies ever interacting with the student.Burgess tell us he doesn't know why someone would make up such a claim. He's now suing for reinstatement to teach physical education at Coronado High. In 2015, he retired from coaching, but was still mentoring coaches."I've told my children and my athletes: It's not always what happens to you, but how you handle it. I'm trying to live through those words now," said Burgess.It's not the first time Burgess has been named in a complaint.In 1995, a city supervisor sued him and the city of Coronado, claiming Burgess berated his players, made sexually inappropriate statements in front of students and sometimes allowed male swimmers to swim naked.Burgess says that case was settled with a confidentiality clause."I can only repeat to myself that the people who know me, know me, and the others will come up with their own conclusions," said Burgess.In a statement, Coronado Unified declined to discuss personnel matters, but did say "...the District takes such claims very seriously.
