Historic numbers of background checks to purchase or possess a firearm have been conducted in June. It's just the latest month with record-breaking numbers since the system was created in 1998. The FBI reported Wednesday that 3.9 million checks were done last month in what's a key barometer of gun sales. The numbers are driven by the crises that have roiled the U.S., including the coronavirus pandemic, an economic recession, protests over racial injustice and calls to reduce police funding. A group representing gunmakers says firearm purchases are a reasonable reaction to the political climate, while gun control advocates say they're concerned first-time buyers don't have enough training. 705

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - A Virginia company is unveiling a brand new technology, with help from jellyfish, to help in the fight against COVID-19.“We're just pretty motivated by the fact that we're making an impact to open the economy, places back up safely,” Senseware CEO Dr. Serene Al-Momen told News 3.Senseware, a technology company based in northern Virginia, specializes in air monitoring.“We quickly realized that the primary concerns of transmissions are airborne transmission for the COVID-19 virus,” Al-Momen said. The technology the company is rolling out is a new pathogen-detecting monitoring system using specific antibodies and proteins from jellyfish that light up when coming in contact with COVID-19.“We're talking about having the results available within minutes, under five minutes,” she said. “If the virus is detected, we immediately in real-time with our cloud-based technology alert you. You see the threat, the detection on your phone. You get an email if you're an operator. You're able to quickly mitigate that issue.”Al-Momen told News 3 the product is in the final stages of third-party testing. She added they’re also looking throughout Virginia, including Hampton Roads, for beta testing sites, specifically healthcare and treatment centers.“This is creating a way to create a safer environment and begin to create that confidence in people to re-populate spaces,” she said. She said it's all about keeping people safe and giving them peace of mind.“Knowledge is power,” Al-Momen said. “When you're having that real-time, around the clock, monitoring of all aspects of air quality, it will create that confidence for people to know that there's that data available in real-time.”This story was first reported by Zak Dahlheimer at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 1790

Garth Brooks has decided it’s someone else’s turn to win the Entertainer of the Year award from the Country Music Association Awards. The announcement came during a Facebook Live on Brooks’ page during a remote press conference.Brooks has won the award seven times."It's time for somebody else to hold the award and know what entertainer of the year feels like," he said.He said after last year’s CMA ceremony, there was one tweet that really stuck with him."It said, 'Why doesn't he step down and have entertainer of the year be for the next generation’. I 100 percent agreed," Brooks said.Brooks talked to the association about creating some sort of entertainer of the year emeritus. However, the Country Music Association said they were unable to control who is nominated for which category. “It’s not our call, we can’t pull you out of an award” they reportedly told Brooks.“We are going to do it ourselves. We are going to pull out from the entertainer of the year,” Brooks announced.Brooks said he is not withdrawing from other categories or award shows, "I'm very competitive, the awards mean the world to me" Brooks said. "With Entertainer, we've been lucky enough to walk home with that several times, and it's someone else's time."The nominations are expected to be announced in the next few weeks. 1314

General Motors has already announced plant closings and big job cuts. Ford could be next.Ford (F) said this summer that it was planning to radically reshape its business, and could close or scale back unprofitable operations in some regions. It said it would spend up to billion on the transformation. The company has revealed little detail about its plans. Adam Jonas, the auto analyst at Morgan Stanley, said he believes Ford is preparing to slash 25,000 jobs worldwide. He expects that most of the cuts will be in Europe, where Ford has long struggled, but he said North American plants and workers won't be spared.Like GM, Ford is reinventing itself to compete in an industry undergoing radical change. Both GM (GM) and Ford have said they need to cut costs to invest in the next generation of vehicles, such as self-driving and electric cars."There are bigger forces at work driving global [automakers] to rethink the fundamental idea of supporting increasingly obsolete segments, propulsion systems, and geographic regions," he wrote in a research note.Ford issued a statement on Tuesday saying the "actions will come largely outside of North America.""This includes the targeted and thoughtful approach we are taking to the redesign of our global salaried workforce," Ford said. "All of this work is ongoing and publishing a job-reduction figure at this point would be pure speculation."Ford's sales in the United States are down about 3% this year. It has announced plans to stop selling traditional sedans in North America other than its iconic Mustang, given the shift in customer preference towards SUVs and pickups. The company said last week that it would cut some shifts and 1,150 hourly jobs at two plants, one in Kentucky, one in Michigan. But it also announced it was adding 1,000 jobs at two other nearby plants, and said that all hourly workers whose current jobs were being eliminated would be offered jobs at another Ford plant.Ford had 202,000 workers worldwide at the end of last year, with about half of those in North America and 54,000 in Europe.GM announced plans last week to close a number of plants worldwide including four in the United States and one in Canada. It will also cut about 8,000 white collar jobs. Taken together, those moves are expected to slash 14,000 jobs in North America. While GM said it will offer many of its laid-off hourly workers new jobs at different plants, critics including President Donald Trump have taken the company to task for cutting jobs at a time of strong profitability. 2548
