Loved ones held a fundraiser today for the family of a mother killed by a hit-and-run driver. The CHP says Bernadette Castillo was struck last week along the 94 in Jamul. Her family and friends held a barbeque to raise funds for her funeral at Colina Del Sol Park on Friday.July 27th was a day that Debra Marulli will never forget. "Shock. Pain. A little bit of comfort because I know she’s not hurting," said Marulli. "Somebody loves her. To leave her on the side of the road like she’s an old pet, it's cruel." Loved ones held on to positive memories today while raising money for her funeral. "She was amazing," said Marulli. "She went out of her way to help anybody. She didn’t hold a grudge against people."The CHP has not identified a suspect. McDonald's is celebrating International Women's Day with a big, gleaming, W."For the first time in our brand history, we flipped our iconic arches," said McDonald's Chief Diversity Officer Wendy Lewis.The giant arches have been physically flipped at just one California restaurant. Lucy Hernandez says she struggles to wake up every morning. The Chicago fall weather makes battling her depression even harder. The sound of her alarm reminds her that she needs to get out of bed and help her daughter start her virtual learning class.“I have been working in the company for 20 years," Hernandez said. “It's like one day you come to work, and they tell you, ‘We don’t have a job for you.’ It is stressful. I have been going through depression.”A recent Pew Hispanic survey shows that U.S. Latinos are among the hardest hit by pay cuts and job losses because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hernandez says it could get worse for her family.“My husband works at a hotel and his place is open, but who knows what is coming,” said Hernandez.Hernandez says her layoff has changed her perspective about the presidential election and will vote for the person who she thinks will bring back jobs.While hotel workers like Hernandez struggle to find a job, employees at Mi Tierra Restaurant work diligently to make sure every customer is pleased with their service. Prisila Fuentes manages the family business and knows that no restaurant is safe during the COVID-19 pandemic."It’s been a struggle,” Fuentes said. “We have been getting back to what we were pre-COVID-19, but it’s a long way from what we had before.”The Fuentes family made the tough decision and closed their doors in April to strategize.More than half of their employees were laid off for a month, but they were later called back.Fuentes says that her recent business struggles will be factors when voting for the next president. She has not committed to either candidate and hopes to get more clarity on their plans for the economy, an issue that for many Latinos is the bottom line in this election. 1777

Lucy McBath never imagined she'd run for Congress. In a way, she wishes she didn’t feel she had to.  “I really wish that Jordan were here; I really wish that,” says McBath, who lost her teen son to violence. “I would have been watching him graduate from college and go on with his life.”Six years ago, McBath was working as a flight attendant, thinking about retirement, when her 17-year-old son Jordan was shot and killed.A man fired into the car he was sitting in with his friends at a gas station after an argument over loud music.McBath had only thought about gun laws, one time before her son’s death. It was when Trayvon Martin was shot and killed.“But upstairs, Jordan said to me, ‘Mom, that's not going to happen to me. Mom I’m going to be good.’”After Jordan’s death, McBath became a gun safety advocate, speaking with lawmakers and groups across the country.But it wasn't until the shooting at Parkland that she considered a life in public office.“And all I kept thinking is that these kids are standing up,” she says. “Why are they the ones that are having to fight for their lives?”With no experience or resources, the idea of running was scary. However, McBath said she turned to faith to move beyond her fear.“I believe if I’m in God's will and I’m doing what he's calling me to do, then I have to move beyond the fear.”McBath won the Democratic Primary, then the runoff. Now, she's facing incumbent Republican Karen Handel in a close race for the 6th Congressional District seat that's long been held by a Republican.McBath says her son is with her every step of the way. 1599
