SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Candidates vying for the a seat in the 50th Congressional District reacted Monday to news that Rep. Duncan Hunter is set to change his plea to guilty in a campaign finance case. Documents show that Hunter is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday at 10 a.m. for a "change of plea hearing." Hunter said he would plead guilty to one count of misusing campaign funds in an interview with San Diego TV station KUSI. "My trial was set for January 22 -- that's not going to happen now. Tomorrow, on Tuesday, I'm going to change my plea to guilty. I think it's important not to have a public trial for three reasons, and those three reasons are my kids ... It's been a privilege to serve in Congress for 11 years, three tours in the Marine Corps in the wars. I think we've done a lot of great things for the nation."RELATED STORIES: Rep. Duncan Hunter scheduled to change plea in campaign finance caseTIMELINE: Campaign spending probe against HunterFederal judge changes start date for Hunter trial"I think it's important for people to know that I did make mistakes. I did not properly monitor or account for my campaign money. I justify that plea with the understanding that I am responsible for my campaign and what happens to my campaign money," Hunter told KUSI's Steve Bosh.Margaret Hunter pleaded guilty in June 2019 and agreed to testify against her husband.Read through the statements below: Darrell Issa, who has entered the race for the 50th Congressional District, released the following statement: “As a friend and a colleague, I thank Duncan Hunter for his service to our country in the Marine Corps and in Congress, where he has always been a strong conservative voice on behalf of his constituents. Though his misuse of campaign funds was clearly wrong, I wish him and his family the best as they address the matters ahead of them.” - Darrell IssaCarl DeMaio, who’s also in the running for the seat, released the below statement: “While this must have been a tough decision for him, Congressman Hunter’s decision to plead guilty is the right one for his family and his constituents and shows that no one should be above the law - especially Members of Congress. My thoughts and prayers are with the Hunter family as they go through this difficult process.”Ammar Campa-Najjar's campaign also released the following statement: "Today is a sad day for this district because no constituent hopes to see their congressman plead guilty to corruption. But today is also a day filled with opportunity because it’s the first time in years people, not political scandals, will come first again. 2618
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As cities nationwide remove landmarks named after Confederate or racially-charged figures, an online petition is demanding San Diego do the same at Mount Hope Cemetery.A Change.org petition is asking Mayor Kevin Faulconer to remove a memorial to Confederate soldiers at Mount Hope Cemetery."Why does the City of San Diego expect black citizens, literal descendants of the very people the monument celebrates enslaving, oppressing, and terrorizing, to maintain such a horrific monument?" the petition says. The petition has nearly 900 or 1,000 requested signatures. The monument was erected in 1948 on a plot owned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who supporters call such markers, testaments to history. Both Union and Confederate soldiers are buried in the cemetery.10news found the monument stone heavily damaged, with pieces scattered around the monument. Sources tell us the vandalism is a recent and ongoing issue. The monument isn't the only one in San Diego that has been subject to Change.org efforts. In 2017, the city removed a marker from Horton Plaza Park that commemorated the Jefferson Davis Highway, named for the Confederate leader. Fast forward to Wednesday, the city removed another marker from the park, this time commemorating Robert E. Lee Highway."Robert E. Lee Highway marker is gone. Many thanks to city Park & Rec staff and Stockdale Capital Partners for getting this done," Councilmember Mark Kersey tweeted. The difference between Horton Plaza Park and the cemetery plot: the plot is privately owned. In the past, city officials say their hands are tied."We support the removal from a private plot on City land and of a Confederate statue. Such statues are symbols of division that represent a horrendous past and glorify white supremacy. Such statues do not belong in a place of peace; they celebrate instead slavery (1620-1865) and the Jim Crow (1877-1964). The City should not have such symbols of intolerance and hatred on its property," said Francine Maxwell, President of the San Diego branch of the NAACP. 2078
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a State of Emergency Proclamation Friday clearing the way for firefighters to jump on projects meant to protect communities.Newsom said we're seeing larger and more dangerous wildfires than ever before and as a state we need to change our approach."Our world is changing, the wets are getting a lot wetter, the hots hotter and the dry, drier," he said.Alpine shared in the devastation last year; the West Fire leveled neighborhoods and left dozens homeless.CalFire Director Michael Mohler said ten crews across the state will be activated under the proclamation to clear brush and conduct controlled burns. They will also work with 110 members of the National Guard. The proclamation focuses on vulnerable communities. CalFire's Priority Fuel Reduction Project List includes two communities in San Diego County, Guatay and Crest. "Some of them have gone through some kind of environmental review," Director of the Sierra Club, Katheryn Phillips said. The U.S. Forest Service plans prescribed burns a year in advance to account for the environmental processes."We already know the areas of concern and we know how the fire is going to react to those areas, so we have a lot of biologists come in, a lot of fire experts come in and determine which areas are good for burning," Public Affairs Officer for Cleveland National Forest Olivia Walker said.Under the proclamation, environmental regulations are suspended, concerning environmentalists."If it's a butterfly mating season and it's an endangered species, it's not going to be the proper time to burn," Walker said."Could an unintended consequence be a mudslide?" Phillips added.Mohler said there's nothing to worry about, saying the proclamation solely streamlines the paperwork. He said they will absolutely bring in biologists, environmental scientists and archeologists before lighting prescribed burns."The good news is the governor is engaged in this issue I think the issue of how we deal with some of the impacts of climate change; this is just the beginning of a very long conversation," Phillips said. 2128
