Kia is joining its affiliate Hyundai in recalling thousands of vehicles in the U.S. because water can get into a brake computer, cause an electrical short and possibly a fire.The Kia recall covers nearly 229,000 Sedona minivans from the 2006 through 2010 model years. Also covered are Sorento SUVs from 2007 through 2009. Kia is telling owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures and other vehicles until the problem can be fixed.The company says in documents posted Thursday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that moisture can get into the antilock brake control computer and cause an electrical short and possible fires. Kia has reports of seven fires, but no injuries. The problem can happen even if the engine is turned off.The recall is another in a series of problems that the South Korean automakers have had with engine fires during the past few years. Past problems have triggered investigations by the U.S. road safety agency.Dealers will install a relay in the main electrical junction box to stop power from going to the brake computer when the engine is off. The recall is expected to start April 10.Earlier this month, Hyundai recalled nearly 430,000 small cars due to the same problem. That recall covered certain 2006 through 2011 Elantra and 2007 through 2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. Both companies said the rate of fires is low, but Hyundai is not recommending that the cars be parked outside.Hyundai said in documents that it has three reports of fires and no related injuries. Last April, NHTSA opened two new investigations into fires involving Hyundai and Kia vehicles after getting complaints of more than 3,100 fires and 103 injuries.The agency granted a petition seeking the investigations by the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, a consumer advocacy group.The investigations, one for Hyundai and the other for Kia, cover noncrash fires in almost 3 million vehicles from the affiliated automakers. The probes cover the 2011 through 2014 Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe, the 2011 through 2014 Kia Optima and Sorento, and the 2010 through 2015 Kia Soul. The complaints came from consumers and from data provided by both automakers.NHTSA had previously said it would incorporate the noncrash fires into a 2017 investigation that examined recalls of Hyundai and Kia vehicles for engine failures. It opened the new probes “based on the agency’s analysis of information received from multiple manufacturers, consumer complaints and other sources.”Engine failure and fire problems with Hyundais and Kias have affected more than 6 million vehicles since 2015, according to NHTSA documents. So far, Hyundai and Kia have recalled about 2.4 million vehicles to fix problems that can cause fires and engine failures.In addition, the automakers are doing a “product improvement campaign” covering another 3.7 million vehicles to install software that will alert drivers of possible engine failures and send the cars into a reduced-speed “limp” mode if problems are detected. 3041

  

Jackie Wilkinson recently picked up an unknown call at her home.Her cable company was showing on her caller ID, so Wilkinson did what she normally doesn't do with unexpected calls: she answered. "It appeared that Spectrum was calling, our provider for internet, phone and cable services, so I answered, " Wilkinson said.Other customers report receiving similar calls that show up as Cox, Comcast, Xfinity, Charter, Optimum, and others.The caller immediately offered to help lower her bill, so Wilkinson perked up."He asked, 'Do you want to save money?" Wilkinson said. "Naturally, in this day and age, who doesn't want to save money? So I said yes, and he said, 'Great, now tell me how much you are paying.'"But that last comment from the phone rep raised a red flag."These are questions I would think Spectrum would already know," she said. "They can see your billing price right there!"Who was really calling?When the caller then told her she could save money by signing up for a satellite TV service instead, Wilkinson realized it wasn't really Spectrum Cable on the line.Instead, it was a case of "spoofing," where a fake number shows on your caller ID.Scammers have been spoofing the numbers of the FBI and IRS for several years now and getting people to answer the phone that way. It was only natural they'd start pretending to be your cable company.We contacted Spectrum, and the company said it has other complaints about these calls.It recently sent out a warning to customers saying: "If an offer doesn't sound right, customers may ask the representative on the phone to validate they are an employee by looking up their account number. Spectrum representatives will always have an account number." Then call your company (at their customer service number on your bill) and ask if there is any such person working there.Wilkinson just wants to warn others."If you see your cable company calling, you think its important," Wilkinson said. "The phone number appears on your phone as if they are the cable company, so everything seemed legitimate up until the questions." But cable providers never call you to chat about lowering your bill or offering a discount. In a town on the Puget Sound of Washington, Mario Rivera makes his way down to the secluded beach in his backyard. "We have to walk a little bit to get to it," he says.Rivera walks along the beach to an adult male gray whale decomposing on his property."40 feet long… we named it Gunther," Rivera says, pointing to the rotting whale.Gunther is one of 30 gray whales that have washed up dead on the shores of Washington so far this year. If you include Alaska, Oregon and California, that number jumps to 81 and counting.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is calling the phenomenon an unusual mortality event, and there's simply not enough storage space for these massive decomposing animals."This whale got stranded about three or four miles down there," Rivera explains.Homeowners in the area weren't too happy about where Gunther landed naturally, so the Marine Mammal Stranding Network had to find somewhere else to designate as his final resting place."My wife and I just looked at each other and said 'Hey, let's take it to our property,'" Rivera says.With permission from their one neighbor, Rivera and his wife were the first to volunteer their property as a place for the whale to decompose.They were the start of a movement as NOAA says 15 more have volunteered since. It's an unexpected response considering the scent of a decomposing whale is far from pleasant."It smells like a rotting whale," Rivera explains.He says the stench comes and goes with the hot temps and wind, but he's been covering it in lime to help, and he says the pungent smell will likely go away after a month. What's more important, is that Gunther has given Rivera and scientists an opportunity to study why so many whales may be dying."When we opened him up, we found nothing but eel grass. And eel grass isn't part of their diet. This whale was what we call desperation feeding," Rivera says.John Calambokidis has been studying whales along the West Coast for 35 years. He's a research biologist with Cascadia Research. Calambokidis says the malnourished state of Gunther was very similar to what they've been seeing with other dying whales."Most of these whales have shown up very thin and emaciated--very little oil or fat in their blubber layer, which suggests they didn't get enough to feed last year," Calambokidis says.Gray whales spend the summers feeding in the Arctic and then migrate south near Mexico for the winter. All the whale strandings show some aren't making it through their normal seasonal fasting as they migrate back north along the West Coast in the spring. Calambokidis says it still isn't 100 percent clear why so many whales are dying, but he thinks its at least due in part to food supply not being able to meet the demand of the West Coast's growing whale population."Most recent estimate was 27,000 gray whales in this population," Calambokidis says.Research biologists have seen this trend once before back in 1999 and 2000. The theories were the same, and gray whales have made a comeback in the following decades. But now, scientists are questioning whether warming waters is also playing a role."We're not yet alarmed about this in the sense that we've seen something like this before and they've recovered from it. But we really do want to understand what's going on," Calambokidis says. "Particularly since there have been such dramatic changes in the arctic ecosystem. Making sure there isn't also a climate change element to this that could suggest a longer-term pattern we need to be more concerned about."According to Calambokidis, waters are warmer, and ice cover has dramatically been reduced, changing the dynamics of the ecosystem and how whales reach their prey.Part of their job as research biologists is to learn if there's more to the story. Calambokidis says they study each carcass searching the tissues for disease or contaminants. But for now, the main issue is dealing with the abundance of dead whales.
