It’s a tough time to do your banking if you prefer going to a branch. Hours have been cut at many locations, and social distancing guidelines mean bank lobbies are limiting traffic — assuming they are open at all.For customers who absolutely need to visit branches, banks are taking steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Sean Potter of Minneapolis, who blogs at My Money Wizard, saw these precautions during a recent meeting at his local bank. “It was awkward because I had an appointment with the relationship manager, and we still had to maintain 6 feet of distance even though we had to review the same documents together,” he says.Potter appreciates that the branch was trying to ensure his safety, but says he’s now considering other ways to bank. “From now on, it’s online or on the phone,” he says.Here are some ways you can bank without leaving home, along with safety tips if you do need to venture out to a brick-and-mortar branch.Explore online options“A lot of banking can be done with the click of a button,” says Brian Milton, head of retail banking at Union Bank. Union and most other banks and credit unions have robust websites and apps you can use for many banking tasks.Deposit checks. With mobile check deposit, you can snap a photo of a paper check and submit it online, via app or your bank’s secure website.Pay bills. With online bill pay, you can log in to your bank’s webpage and enter the name of the recipient and their contact information. Your bank handles the rest by making an electronic funds transfer or mailing a paper check.Apply for an account. Opening a new checking or savings account can be as easy as going to a bank’s website and submitting an online application. To apply, have your driver’s license and Social Security number handy to prove your identity.Sign documents. Some institutions use digital services such as DocuSign to prepare documents, including loan and account opening paperwork. They can be securely emailed to you, and you can sign them electronically by clicking highlighted prompts.Request payment assistance. Need some leeway with loan payments? Some banks are allowing customers to request arrangements online, including delaying due dates for bills, temporarily reducing monthly payments or asking for fee waivers.Or pick up the phoneKeep your bank’s customer service number nearby. You can use it to speak to a real person about account questions or issues.For example, some banks have announced that customers can call and request to waive non-sufficient funds fees, overdraft fees and monthly service charges.But keep this in mind: If you’re faced with steep fees, it may be better to simply switch to a cheaper bank. Online-only institutions, for example, tend to have low or no monthly service fees, and some offer toll-free customer service numbers staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He adds that doing so helps branches manage occupancy and social distancing requirements.Calling ahead can also help the bank make sure it has a staffer on hand who can help you with a specialized transaction or request, he says.Consider drive-up services. Some banks have drive-up lanes where customers can receive the same services offered inside a branch, such as making cash deposits and withdrawals, and getting money orders, all at a safe distance from other people. You could also withdraw cash from an on-site ATM without the need to interact with a teller.Bring your protective gear. Since you’ll be touching screens, door handles and other public surfaces, consider bringing hand sanitizer or wearing gloves. If you do need to step inside a lobby, you may also be asked to wear a mask for everyone’s protection.Accept the changes. Steve Turner, a publicist in Chesterfield, Missouri, says he visits his local branch a few times a month to make business deposits. “There are signs on the floor showing where people should stand to keep their distance,” he says. Turner has also noticed there’s less small talk with the tellers, and reasons it’s because everyone is wearing a mask. INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — After 15 suspicious packages containing pipe bombs were mailed to prominent Democrats, a former president and media across the country by a serial bomb maker, now there are new questions being raised about why the packages made it through the post office system without being caught. The mail bombs never detonated, but how did the packages get dropped off, sorted and sent to places across the country without ever getting stopped for being suspicious? WRTV television station in Indiana dug into what happens to your mail after it goes into the system and found that most mail never goes through any type of security screening during its travel to you. In fact, the post office says many items never get screened at all.The United States Post Office handles more than 500 million pieces of mail every single day. They say they simply deal with too much mail to screen every package individually. So, how does the post office keep us safe with so much stuff traveling through the system? The USPS Postal Inspectors say it has a specific program called the Dangerous Mail Investigations Program, which takes over when suspicious packages come through a facility.Recognizing suspicious mail starts with post office employees, according to USPS’ Domestic Mail Manual. Each post office employee is specifically trained to notice packages that are out of place or look odd. They also have specialized technology in some facilities that sniffs out explosives or chemicals that are inside mail. The employees and technology don't catch everything, but the post office says they do catch suspicious items. INDIANAPOLIS — Parents of two girls who attend Horizon Christian School on Indianapolis’ northeast side say their daughters are being bullied and threatened because of the color of their skin.Alexander Wortham realized something was happening when his daughter, Imani, started acting strange, asking to stay home from school more often than a typical teen girl.He and Dominique Duncan soon found out that their two high school daughters were being bullied.“Silence is killing our young people," Wortham said. "People not dealing with the issue. Not dealing with the problem and I think for us, as parents, enough is enough."Duncan agreed.“Very let down as a parent. Very let down,” Duncan said.Imani and her friend, LaShanti, say a male student started bullying them at school saying things like “If the school ever gets shot up, you’ll be the first one to get shot.”“He pointed to me personally, he looked me in the eye,” Imani said.“He said he would sell me into slavery if I didn’t do what he said and then he started making little jingles about slavery,” LaShanti said.According to an email the parents received from a school administrator, the school suspended the student last week after the girls’ parents brought the issue to the administration’s attention. But that student was allowed to return to class on Monday.The girls felt so uncomfortable, they both decided to stay home this week.“We should be able to go to school and not feel threatened, scared or having to be on edge the whole time,” Imani said.Both parents say they want the school to create more concrete policy changes on bullying. They both suggested an all-school assembly or bringing experts in to discuss race relations and bullying.The Horizon Christian School principal denied to comment on the situation, saying it’s against school policy to discuss students without permission from all parents involved. 1900
In the town of Schuyler, Nebraska, located about 65 miles west of Omaha, immigration reform is a huge issue.A Cargill beef processing plant is the largest employer there, with a predominately Hispanic workforce.People who live in Schuyler, a town of about 6,000 people, are worried what the economic impact would be on the immigrant workforce there if DACA recipients and their families are forced to leave."In this town, there's a lot of commerce, Hispanic business. And the majority of our clients are Hispanics," said Rosa Lopez, Schuyler restaurant owner.Business owners in Schuyler — with a population that’s nearly 70 percent Hispanic and a business district dominated by Hispanic-owned shops and restaurants — is worried about the repercussions its economy would face if there's no DACA resolution by March."We depend on our youngsters for the future,” resident Irma Cuevas said. “So if that were eliminated, it would completely devastate not only Schuyler, but several other communities.""They're our clients,” Lopez said. “And if they get rid of the program, we would lose them as clients. And they wouldn't be able to contribute to the local economy."Long-time residents, like Luis Lucar, say DACA helps keep — and bring in — more people to the workforce there in Schuyler, which he says used to be a ghost town."If that happened, Schuyler would definitely go back to those years where businesses were closing,” Lucar said. “I don't think we want to see that again. And not only in Schuyler, but other Nebraskan cities that basically survive because of the immigrant workforce."Burrito House owner Chuy Salinas said at the end of the day, DACA recipients should get to stay — not only because it's good for business, but because it's the right thing to do.“Business is business,” he said. “But it's heartbreaking to see the moms and their kids, even if they're older like 22 or 25 — they'd have to be sent back and not even have a place to live.” 1964
