SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sitting in the heart of San Diego, Mission Trails Regional Park has 65 miles of trails, as well as boating and picnic areas. You might call it a hikers and bikers paradise, as it provides eight thousand acres of pure outdoor enjoyment for more than two million visitors each year. "Mission Trails Regional Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country," says Jennifer Morrissey, the Executive Director of the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation.Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in mid-March, the park has seen a big increase in visitors, which is great. But it has also created a few problems. "Because we have so many more people," says Morrissey, "we are seeing that there is more wear and tear on the trails."Prior to the pandemic, some of the park's hundreds of volunteers would help maintain the trails. But for the time being, that program has been suspended. "Unfortunately, we don't have volunteers at the park right now. They do everything, from helping on the trails, to staffing the visitors center, to beautification projects. So right now, within the park, there is a lot of work that needs to be done."That work takes money. And that is why Morrissey says 'Giving Tuesday' is the most important fundraiser of the year. "There is a matching progam in place, so that every dollar people give will be matched dollar for dollar by a group of our donors. .Funds that we raise through 'Giving Tuesday' can go towards trail maintenance, restoration, and educational programs we are doing online right now.'While donations are always important, they are even more critical during this pandemic. "We just want to make sure the park continues to be maintained, protected, and available to the entire San Diego community." 1766

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State's coronavirus cases among students continued to rise over the weekend, spiking more than 100 cases in two days.On Sunday, the college reported 286 confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases among on- and off-campus students. SDSU had reported 184 cases among the student population on Friday. The lastest jump in cases comes one day after school officials issued a stay-at-home order for all on-campus students through Tuesday, September 8 at 6 a.m.RELATED: SDSU reports 120 more COVID-19 cases since fall startSan Diego State moves all classes online for 4 weeks as student cases riseSDSU students told to stay at home over Labor Day Weekend as coronavirus cases increase“At that time, this order will be revisited and updated as necessary,” the university said of the order’s expected expiration.SDSU added that, "violations of this order may result in disciplinary consequences."The school moved all classes online less than a week ago out of an abundance of caution after cases spiked. SDSU started the fall semester with about 200 classes in-person, many of which were lab classes that were determined to only be possible in person. The campus is urging students to avoid any gatherings throughout the weekend, isolate and quarantine if they feel ill, and wear a face covering and practice good hygiene. 1344

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Stephanie Eppig didn't sleep much last night. She was busy transforming her business model - under a very tight deadline.“I had to redo the entire schedule, try to line up a food partnership, change our hours,” she said.Eppig co-owns Eppig Brewing, with locations in vista and Point Loma.It was getting back up to speed just in time for July, its busiest month .Then, the devastating news Monday - the county - placing strict new limits on bars, breweries and wineries, to stop the increased spread of the coronavirus. The Vista location - back to Curbside pickup only. As for Point Loma, all guests coming will be required to order food, prepared by a food truck on site.“It's really a punch in the gut right now for us and our employees,” Eppig said. “It’s awful because this is our livelihood and this is our employees’ livelihood and we have zero control over our ability to run our business.”To make matters worse, Eppig already exhausted all the money from her federal Paycheck Protection Program loan - which got the brewery through the first shut down. There's no new agreement on a second round of stimulus.Attorney Kelly DuFord Williams, managing partner at Slate Law Group, says businesses can talk to their banks about lending opportunities - but that involves risk.“Either the government in California or if the Federal Government is going to make that decision, they need to fund another round of P.P.P., so that people can keep their jobs, and people's mental health and family life can have some sort of stability,” said DuFord Williams, who represents small businesses and restaurants.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Tuesday that he is hopeful federal officials will continue to provide economic support for impacted businesses and workers. The employees who went back to work and need unemployment once again will have to rectify for the benefits, the state Employment Development Department said. They can reopen their existing claims for a year, assuming they haven’t exhausted the money. The best ways to do so is online. 2072
