President Donald Trump will announce his decision on who to nominate to the Supreme Court on Saturday, and CNN and the New York Times reported Friday per their sources that Trump intends to nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the court.Trump's formal announcement comes at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday.Barrett’s likely nomination will come just eight days following the death of liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who laid in state in the US Capitol on Friday.Barrett, 48, was previously confirmed by the US Senate to the federal Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in 2017. Her vote garnered the support of three Democrats, Joe Donnelly, Tim Kaine, and Joe Manchin. She is a disciple of Justice Antonin Scalia, serving as his clerk in 1998 and 1999. Given her conservative bona fides, she is expected to give the Supreme Court a clear conservative advantage, fueling hopes from the evangelical right to overturn Roe versus Wade, which has set the precedent for abortion cases for nearly five decades. Liberals say Barrett’s legal views are too heavily influenced by her religious beliefs and fear her ascent to the nation’s highest court could lead to a scaling back of hard-fought abortion rights. She also would replace the justice who is best-known for fighting for women’s rights and equality.Sen. Dianne Feinstein told Barrett her views suggested religious tenets could guide her thinking on the law, the California Democrat telling Barrett: “The conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you.”Barrett responded that her views had evolved and that she agreed judges shouldn’t “follow their personal convictions in the decision of a case, rather than what the law requires.”While two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, have said that a confirmation should not come so close to an election, enough Republican senators have said they would be supportive of Trump’s nominee to ensure a confirmation.Trump will likely become the first president to fill three Supreme Court vacancies in a single term since President Richard Nixon’s first term from 1969 through 1973.At just 48, Barrett would be the youngest justice and her tenure could last for decades. She’s made her mark in law primarily as an academic at the University of Notre Dame, where she began teaching at age 30. She first donned judges’ robes in 2017 after Trump nominated her to the 7th Circuit. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 2464

Reba McEntire's former home in Lebanon, Tennessee has been transformed into an event space, allowing people to host events where one of country music's biggest stars lived for more than a decade. The home, now called The Estate at Cherokee Docks, has seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Each bedroom is themed after a Country Music, including Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, and of course, Reba herself. “We really wanted to be intentional about paying homage to Reba. There are lots of details throughout the house, lots of horses — she loved her horses obviously. Then, we paid tribute to Country Music icons in each of the bedrooms upstairs to really speak to that," Andrea Williams with The Estate at Cherokee Docks, said."This is Country Music history here, and so we wanted to keep that tradition alive.” Throughout the rest of the home, there are touches that Reba herself put in place, such as a movie theater and wine cellar in the basement.Where the property really shines is the event space that is available. Renters have many options inside the home and the rest of property, including the pool, the nearby Cumberland River, the tennis court, and an area under the trees planted throughout the property. “Reba is such a huge icon. To be in her space, to see all of the wonderful things, to see all the personal touches that she added to the property, and now to have it open to the public so that they can experience that too," Williams said. "They can walk in her three-floor closet and work out in her gym with the same equipment that was here when she was here. It’s phenomenal and there’s nothing else like it anywhere else in the city."The space is ideal for company retreats, special events, and weddings, giving people the opportunity to rent the property for the day, overnight, or for an extended period of time. To kick off their first year, The Estate at Cherokee Dock is providing 30 percent off new bookings. Rescuers are searching for crew members aboard two US Marine planes that collided mid-air off the coast of Japan in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to Japan's Ministry of Defense and the US Marine Corps. At least one Marine was killed in the crash and the body has been recovered, the Marine Corps said in a statement. A second Marine was rescued and is described to be in fair condition. Five other Marines remain missing. The KC-130 and F/A-18 collided at 1:42 a.m. local time, according to a Japanese Defense Ministry statement.According to a statement from the US Marine Corps, the crash happened during an aerial refueling that was part of a routine training. The primary mission of a KC-130 is airborne refueling. It is believed five crew were on board the KC-130 and two on the F/A-18 at the time of the crash, two US defense officials told CNN.First Lt. Josh Hayes, a public affairs officer with the 3rd Marines Expeditionary Forces based out of Okinawa, told CNN the rescued Marine was in "fair condition."The killed Marine was found by a Japanese military ship at 12:13 p.m. local time and was being transferred to a mainland medical facility, according to Japanese defense spokesperson Norio Harada.Japan has dispatched 10 aircraft and three ships from its Self Defense Force and Coast Guard to help with the search for five people still believed to be missing. The US 7th Fleet said in a statement that it was supporting ongoing search and rescue efforts with a Navy P-8A Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft flying out of Kadena Air Force Base.Rescue teams are battling bad weather which has passed through the area in the last 24 hours or so, bringing showers, storms and sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph."The weather is definitely going to play a factor," said Hayes. "It's a full team effort between us and the Japanese defense force. And we're hoping to get our Marines back."The crash happened approximately 200 miles (321 kilometers) off the coast of Iwakuni, Japan, a US Marine Corps official told CNN.The planes "had launched from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni and were conducting regularly scheduled training when the mishap occurred," according to a statement from the US Marine Corps.Wednesday's incident comes on the same day that the Marines released a report on a crash in July 2017, also involving a KC-130 variant that killed 15 Marines and one sailor. That KC-130T crash took place in Leflore County, Mississippi, and the "investigation determined that the aircraft's propeller did not receive proper depot-level maintenance during its last overhaul ... in September 2011, which missed corrosion that may have contributed to the propeller blade" coming loose during the flight and going into the aircraft's fuselage, according to a Marine Corps statement on the investigation.The-CNN-Wire 2845

President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at changing policing practices as weeks-long protests against police brutality continue to take place across the country.Trump signed the order Tuesday afternoon at an event at the White House Rose Garden.WHAT IS IN IT?Trump's encouraged police departments to update their training and enact higher standards. He is also encouraging departments to implement accreditation policies for officers.According to senior White House officials, who briefed reporters Monday by phone, the President will also recommend departments call upon social workers to team up with officers when they respond to a non-violent 911 call.Trump is also expected to encourage the formation of a nationwide database to track officers who may be fired from one department in an effort to prevent another department from hiring them.Advisers to the President said Monday the administration would enforce the order by prioritizing departments who adopt the President's recommendations when they apply for federal grants.WHAT IS NOT IN IT?Trump said Tuesday that his order would ban police chokeholds — but stopped short of banning them completely. He said chokeholds would still be permitted if an officer's life is in danger. The order also does not address no-knock warrants or the legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" which currently prohibits officers from being sued in civil court.CONGRESS TAKES ACTION NEXTCongress is expected to debate more consequential pieces of legislation in the coming weeks. While Trump has denounced the officers involved in the arrest and death of George Floyd, he's consistently backed efforts supportive of law enforcement, often declaring himself the president of "law and order." 1751
