A Middle Tennessee woman visiting Gatlinburg with her family got quite a surprise when she found a bear outside their hotel.  Kim Vastola, of Watertown was in Gatlinburg for her son’s baseball tournament and was staying on the first floor of a Quality Inn.Vastola was startled when she heard people yelling about a bear. She went outside and captured video of the bear on a tree behind the hotel before he made his way around the building.  Vastola said the person at the front desk told her the "town bear" – named Robert – was lurking around but there was no need to be alarmed.Apparently, “Robert” lives in the area and roams when he comes out of hibernation. A police officer who claimed she killed a Dallas man in his own apartment in the mistaken belief that he was in her home has been indicted on a charge of manslaughterThe indictment of Amber Guyger comes more than two months after she was arrested in the shooting death of Botham Shem Jean at the Dallas apartment complex where both lived -- a killing that sparked days of protests.Guyger, who was arrested and fired from her job as a Dallas police officer after the September shooting, initially faced a charge of manslaughter. But Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson had said a grand jury could issue a stiffer charge.A charge of manslaughter carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.Botham Jean's family had wanted Guyger to be indicted for murder, their attorney Daryl Washington told CNN.Guyger, who is white, was off-duty when she encountered Jean, an 26-year-old unarmed black man, in his apartment on September 6, police said. Still in her uniform, Guyger parked her car in the complex and walked to what she believed was her apartment, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.The door was slightly ajar as she tried to use her key, which has an electronic chip. When she opened the door, she saw the interior was almost completely dark, according to the affidavit. She described seeing a large silhouette and, believing there was an intruder in her apartment, drew her firearm.She issued verbal commands, but Jean, being in his own home, did not heed them, and Guyger fired two shots, hitting him once in the torso, the affidavit said.Guyger, a four-year veteran, then entered the apartment, called 911 and started administering first aid to Jean. She turned on the lights while on the phone with 911, and only when asked for her address did she realize she was in the wrong apartment, she told police.Jean died at a hospital. Guyger was arrested September 9 on suspicion on manslaughter, and was released from the Kaufman County Jail after posting a 0,000 bond.The Dallas Police Department fired Guyger during a hearing September 24, the police chief said.The shooting sparked days of protest. Police deployed pepper balls on demonstrators a week after the shooting. Protesters angry with the lack of public information in the case interrupted a City Council meeting to demand accountability and more police oversight in general.Jean's parents filed a lawsuit in federal court against Guyger and the city last month, alleging Guyger used excessive force. 2516

A recent string of extremist attacks highlights an alarming trend: a growing number of hate crimes across the country.In fact, it’s up for the fourth year in a row in most major cities, according to Brian Levin, who studies hate crimes. Levin says one possible reason for the most recent spike of attacks is the midterm elections.“We're a very polarized society,” says Levin, who works at the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. “We're not only divided, but we're entrenched in that division.”Experts say hotly contested political races can cause a jump in hate crimes. It happened around the 2016 presidential election.“November of that year was the worst month of 14 years, going back to the first anniversary of 9/11,” Levin says.Just this week, attorneys for three men accused of planning to bomb a mosque the day after Donald Trump became president say his rhetoric during the campaign inspired the men.Now that he's president, others worry his words could motivate others.At a recent rally, President Trump stated, “You know what? A suspect wanted in the fatal shooting of a prominent Houston cardiologist is the subject of an arrest warrant, Houston police said at a news conference on Wednesday.Joseph James Pappas, 65, is the suspect, Chief Art Acevedo said. He has not been seen for the past two days, the chief said.Acevedo told reporters a tip came in Tuesday after surveillance video released a day before showed the suspect, whom someone said they recognized.The suspect's mother was a patient of the doctor and died during surgery 20 years ago, Acevedo said.Dr. Mark Hausknecht, who treated former President George H.W. A statue depicting President Donald Trump in the nude will be displayed at The Haunted Museum in Las Vegas after being purchased by a paranormal investigator and TV show personality.Zak Bagans paid ,000 for the statue, called "The Emperor Has No Balls," at an auction in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Bagans is the host of "Ghost Adventures" on the Travel Channel.He owns The Haunted Museum, which features winding hallways and secret passages, and is said to be haunted by spirits.
