BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will offer residents 20,000 rental bikes this year to ease the city's notorious traffic jams, according to authorities with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform.Five hundred rental kiosks will be set up around the city to offer residents over 20,000 rental bikes, the commission said.Beijing has also proposed creating new bike lanes in some areas, including main streets, historical and cultural conservation areas and some major business districts, from 2011 to 2015, according to the commission.The capital city currently has about 5 million vehicles on its roads, leading to serious traffic congestion that frustrates the city's residents on a daily basis."A lack of bike lanes is the reason why I refuse to ride a bike. Bikes and vehicles are using the same lanes, and that frightens me and makes me feel unsafe," said Beijing resident Song Tao.People often park cars on the city's existing bike lanes, pushing cyclists onto the vehicles' lanes, said Song.To ease traffic congestion, Beijing has made various efforts to encourage people to opt for modes of public transportation.On Dec. 31, Beijing opened three new subway lines, bringing the number of subway lines in Beijing to 15, with a total length of 372 kilometers, said Beijing Metro Spokesman Jia Peng.Beijing will open four more subway lines in 2012, according to information released at a rail transit construction mobilization conference.Amid other measures to ease traffic in 2011, city authorities decided to allow only 240,000 vehicles to be registered annually, slashing the new car registrations by two-thirds from the 2010 level.Meanwhile, vehicles are banned from roads one day each week according to license plate numbers.

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Hewlett-Packard (HP) on Friday announced that it is keeping the webOS software alive by contributing it to the open source community.The company said it will make the underlying code of webOS available under an open source license and will engage the open source community to help define the charter of the open source project."WebOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable," Meg Whitman, HP's chief executive officer, said in a statement."By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices," she added.HP said it will remain active in the development and support of webOS, while the source code will be available for use and improvement by anyone choosing to download it, which means other hardware manufacturers can also use the software.With the help of the open source community, HP can save development and other costs and the new announcement is expected to result in more layoffs from its webOS team, some analysts noted.The webOS is a mobile operating system initially developed by Palm which was acquired by HP last April for 1.2 billion U.S. dollars.In February this year, HP released TouchPad, its first tablet computer which runs the webOS operating system. The device didn't sell well, and HP in August decided to completely shut down webOS hardware business, including TouchPad and webOS phones.HP then said that it will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.By keeping the software open source, users of webOS devices will continue to receive software improvements and updates in the future, HP noted."As webOS gains traction as an open source alternative in the marketplace, you could see webOS on several different types of devices by any number of vendors. BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China plans to decrease leprosy rates by 50 percent over the next 10 years, according to a joint plan to fight the infectious disease issued by the Ministry of Health and ten other ministerial-level institutions.The prevalence rate is targeted to be brought down to one case per 10,000 people by 2015. The rate will further shrink to one in every 100,000 people by 2020 in at least 98 percent of the country's counties, according to the plan.A total of 500,000 cases of leprosy have been reported and treated for free throughout the country since the founding of the People's Republic of China on Oct. 1, 1949.The number of leprosy cases has plummeted over the past 62 years, but the country still faces challenges in fighting the disease, the plan said.Leprosy, an infectious disease that has affected humanity for over 4,000 years, is primarily characterized by skin lesions and progressive physical debility, and can cause permanent nerve damage.Despite sustained efforts -- and considerable success -- in bringing the disease under control, leprosy is still a serious disease in some parts of China and people who have been cured of the disease continue to face discrimination.More than 1,700 new cases have been reported annually in the past five years. The provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Hunan and the Tibet Autonomous Region are most affected by the disease, according to the plan.

BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Study found that women who took multivitamins may actually be at risk, media reports on Wednsday.Women who took the dietary supplements vitamin B6, folic acid, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron and multivitamins had a higher risk of death than women who did not.The new study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, examined more than 38,000 women aged 55 and older who took part in the Iowa Women's Health Study, which started in the mid 1980s. Researchers found the vitamins did nothing to reduce the risk of death and that most supplements have no positive effect on women's health.The study did not distinguish if the women in the study took the vitamins to fight diseases or to maintain health.Vitamin experts say the best way to make sure you are getting all necessary vitamins is to eat a well-balanced diet. The vitamins people take do not  depend on personal preference.
