CHICAGO, Ill. – The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) celebrated its 110th anniversary this month. Just days later, they filed for bankruptcy protection. The move came as the organization was hit with dozens of child sexual abuse lawsuits dating back decades. “The boy scouts have had the problem of pedophiles targeting their troops since the very earliest days,” said attorney Chris Hurley with the Chicago based law firm Hurley McKenna & Mertz. The firm has represented more than a dozen former boy scouts who claim they were the victims of sexual abuse. “The Boy Scouts approach over all those many years was to keep it secret, to suppress the information, not share it with the community and not really addressed the problem,” said Hurley. The problem, however, has been known for decades. Court records revealed that since the 1920s, the BSA compiled “red” lists of adult volunteers identified as potential child molesters. They were known as the “ineligible files” or “perversion files.” One serial pedophile, who was twice convicted in Indiana before preying on hundreds of boy scouts in Illinois, was Thomas Hacker. He was convicted in 1989 and sentenced to 100 years in prison, where he died. Hurley settled 18 cases brought by Hacker’s victims. “I interviewed Thomas Hacker in prison and asked him why he chose the Boy Scouts. And what he told me was. ‘It was just so easy. They really didn't do anything to stop me.’” Two weeks ago, the Boy Scouts of America announced a five-year-partnership with an organization that provides services to male survivors of sexual abuse. The BSA isn’t talking but issued a statement in which president & CEO Roger Mosby wrote: “We sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed in Scouting. In addition to implementing strong policies to prevent abuse, we are dedicated to supporting victims when and how they need it.” Sweeping new legal changes extending or eliminating the statute of limitations for victims to sue their abusers have been passed in more than a dozen states like California, New York and New Jersey. That’s led to more survivors coming forward and filing suit, but with last week’s bankruptcy filing by the BSA, everything’s been put on hold. In its filing, the organization estimates its assets at between billion and billion. “The bankruptcy is really an attempt by the Boy Scout organization to control the damages and control hopefully how much money they have to pay out and to get a cut off for any more claims,” said Hurley. A portion of those assets will likely go to compensate victims. But anyone who has not filed a claim by a looming deadline could be barred from future settlements. “The bill has come due. And these abuse victims, they've got to pay these people. It's not fair to continue to deny them justice.” 2831

As we get closer to the end of this election cycle, voters will find many different fliers and postcards in their mailboxes.All sorts of groups and campaigns are trying to reach voters before November 3, so the mailers are not unusual. However, one voter in Kentucky got a postcard that didn't sit well with him. The handwritten postcard started with a simple greeting: "Allan, thank you for being a previous voter!"But the next few lines left the recipient, Allan Carr, feeling intimidated."Who you vote is secret, but who you vote for is public information," said the postcard. "After the election on Tuesday, November 3, local organizations may follow up with you on your voting record.""It didn't scare me, but I saw it as threatening," explained Carr. "So, I can see somebody else being threatened by it."Carr said he received the postcard about two days after he voted early."I didn't understand it a bit," said Carr. "I don't even know what side - which campaign - it came from."The postcard didn't come from a political campaign. According to the fine print on the front of the card, it was paid for by Indivisible Chicago Alliance. According to the group's website, Indivisible Chicago Alliance describes itself as "a group of Chicago-area residents alarmed by the 2016 election and committed to resisting the Trump agenda." According to its mission statement, the group "engages with public servants to create a just society by promoting progressive values and grassroots engagement."One of the group's projects is "Postcards to Swing States." They're using volunteers to handwrite more than 15 million postcards to voters in 14 swing states. Kentucky is on their list, and the group confirms 865,000 postcards were sent out to Kentucky voters."The messaging on our postcards is designed to encourage people to vote and uses language that has been tested and proven to do so," said Marj Halperin with Indivisible Chicago Alliance. "This is a nonpartisan message that does not ask or encourage anyone to vote for specific candidates."According to the frequently asked questions section on the group's website, volunteers can choose between two approved messages."Message A" is listed as a "social pressure" message. It is written to say: "Thank you for being a [previous/first time] voter! Who you vote for is secret, but whether you vote is public information. After the election on Tuesday, November 3, local organizations may follow up with you on your voting record."The message is very similar to what Carr received. However, unlike the approved message that should say "whether you vote is public information," Carr's said, "who you vote for is public information."Halperin said the group did not authorize the message Carr received."Unfortunately, this volunteer did not write our approved message, which is solely designed to encourage people to vote," said Halperin. "With many volunteers writing multiple cards, this would seem to be an error, resulting in a message that not only is contrary to our approved language but also doesn't quite make sense."The message on Carr's postcard is also untrue. Kentucky has a secret ballot system, so the Secretary of State is certain no one will know who a voter votes for unless that voter tells someone."Whether you're voting in-person or voting absentee, there's no way anybody knows who you voted for," said Secretary of State Michael Adams. "I don't know. The poll workers don't know, and certainly, some shady out-of-state interest group doesn't know who you voted for."While Indivisible Chicago Alliance says their postcard to Carr was a mistake, there are confirmed situations in other states where voters have gotten intimidating messages by other groups. In Kentucky, intimidating voters is illegal."A person cannot intimidate, coerce, or attempt to interfere with someone's right to vote," said Assistant Attorney General Alex Garcia.Garcia says the Attorney General's Office has received a complaint involving an intimidating message, and they're looking into it currently."That complaint received - the language that was used was really vague. It was from an out-of-state organization," said Garcia. FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Bailey Anne Vincent dances with all of her senses but one. She says she’s profoundly deaf from all usable hearing. "I am a choreographer, a professional dancer, a homeschooling mother, a writer, an advocate, and a director of my own professional dance company which is a body-positive dance company outside of D.C.,” Vincent said. In life, she relies on reading lips and sign language, but when dancing, she’s able to feel the music and innately understand the rhythm. “So I can be a bit of a control freak because I like to hit play on the music myself, because when I hit play, it’s like I start my internal metronome, and I start the clock in my head,” Vincent said. She started losing her hearing as a child and realized why when she was diagnosed with a chronic illness. “I have cystic fibrosis transmembrane related disorder which is a variant of cystic fibrosis, and for me it impacts all of my major organs so my sinuses are impacted, my lungs, I’ve had a copious amounts of surgeries on my stomach, and I have a whole bunch of robot parts so I call myself a bionic ballerina,” Vincent said. From inhaling antibiotics to taking daily medications, Vincent faces many challenges with her health. So, when something like the coronavirus becomes a global concern, it means Vincent's life could be in danger. “I am considered high risk amid the coronavirus outbreak,” Vincent said. Vincent’s husband, John LaBarbera, says they always have to be cautious of germs and sickness around her, so at first, it didn’t seem like that big of deal. However, it was inevitable that the emotion of it all would eventually catch up. “Bailey often says to me ‘your cold could be my pneumonia.' All the sudden today as we were driving to the studio, I just started feeling this tightness in my chest – which understandably is a concern so I was like ‘oh no’—but I could immediately tell that it was just that I had been suppressing the stress about it, the worry about her and about the illnesses,” LaBarbera said. Vincent says cystic fibrosis patients are familiar with staying six feet apart from one another, but when the whole world needs to practice social distancing it can be a bit daunting. “Because of my health, I’m used to having to wipe things down, and be aware of germs, and avoid other people who are sick, but this is just so scary because we don’t want to bring it to anyone else who is immune-compromised or to my parents or the elderly and so I think everyone feels so much more involved in keeping one another safe,” Vincent said. It should be noted, we stayed multiple feet apart while recording this story, and sanitized all camera equipment for the safety of Vincent. And a studio that would normally be filled with dancers was reduced to Vincent and her family. Vincent says she’s not sure how she’ll handle this new reality. “I’m honestly really disheartened and depressed because for me, dance is my outlet. It’s the thing that makes me not worry about the pain of my physicality, and not think about my health so much. So not being able to have that outlet, of course, is difficult when you’re someone with chronic pain and issues to not be able to be out in the world and distract yourself from your current circumstance,” Vincent said.
