WUHAN -- The rainstorm and floods have killed 68 people and 25 others were missing in central China's Hubei Province since the flood season began in June, according to local government. Another 402,200 people have been evacuated from affected areas, said Liu Hui, deputy head of the disaster relief office under the provincial civil affairs department at a press conference on Sunday afternoon. Hubei, which is also called "the province of thousands of lakes", has experienced six major rainstorms since June, which have triggered floods in more than 2,000 rivers, mountain torrents and landslides, causing an economic loss of more than 3,800 million yuan, said Liu. The central and local governments had allocated more than 90.5 million yuan of relief fund to the affected areas and all the evacuated people have been well accommodated, said Liu. "The evacuated residents have been arranged to live in tents, government buildings, schools or at their relatives and local governments have sent medical teams to treat the injured," said Liu. The official with the provincial flood control office warned local government of preparing for new floods as heavy rainstorms were said to hit Hubei from Tuesday to Friday. "Although the large rivers, like the Yangtze and the Hanjiang Rivers, remain calm so far, the water level of 2,000 rivers of smaller size have risen dramatically, posing a serious threat to the flood control in the counties where the dams are poorly maintained," said Guo Zhigao, deputy director of the provincial flood control office. In addition, most of the reservoirs in Hubei have used out its capacity and some were even reported with leakage and overflow, according to Guo. A pair of young giant pandas will soon call Adelaide Zoo in South Australia home.The couple will be the first pandas to settle down in the southern hemisphere - the last time the endangered species were seen was nearly two decades ago during a visit to the Australasian region .President Hu Jintao and Australian Prime Minister John Howard signed an agreement yesterday formalizing the 10-year loan in Sydney.Hu said the move is a friendly gesture and the pandas will become a symbol of friendship.Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said after the signing ceremony that he played a key role in working with the Chinese to borrow the pandas as part of a global survival program."I love animals and I think the giant panda is one of the truly great animals of the world," said Downer.A native of Adelaide, Downer was excited that China agreed to send the pandas to the zoo where his grandfather was once the chief.It is hoped that the two-year-old male "Wang Wang", or "Net" and one-year-old "Funi", or "Lucky Girl", will breed when they reach sexual maturity.The two pandas are from the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province and they were named by the public earlier this year, said Zhang Guiquan, a director at the reserve.Chris West, CEO of the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia, said that the pair's presence in Australia will signify international collaboration to secure a future for wildlife."We will send our staff to Wolong to receive training," West said. "Our staff will also visit the giant panda facilities at San Diego Zoo, where they have successfully bred and managed giant pandas, and the climate is similar to that in South Australia."The giant panda is unique to China and often serves as an unofficial national mascot. The animals were sent abroad as a sign of warm diplomatic relations or to mark breakthroughs in ties.In a related development, two giant pandas "Bing Xing", 7, and "Hua Zui Ba", 4, are scheduled to leave China today for a 10-year sojourn in Spain.Giant pandas are among the world's most endangered species. This is also the second-highest average temperature since 1951 and only 0.3 degrees lower than last August's average of 21.9 C, said Zhu Qiwen, deputy chief of the disaster forecasting and relief department of the CMA.Northwest China's Qinghai Province was hit by its worst heatwave since 1951, with high temperatures also roasting Beijing, Gansu, Tibet and Inner Mongolia.CMA head Zheng Guoguang said the country has been more frequently hit by extreme weather conditions this year.The conditions match predictions in a weather forecast report jointly published by the CMA, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.It says that China's average temperature rose by 0.5 to 0.8 degrees in the 20th century. And the extreme weather's frequency and intensity are all under dramatic change.The CMA's list of extreme weather events includes heavy rains and floods in East China's Shandong Province and Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region where rainfall increased 50 per cent. More than 588,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes in Central China's Hunan Province in the wake of Typhoon Sepat, which has left two people dead and seven missing in the province.

I identify China with tremendous capacity to grow, and great opportunities with these people."His last visit to China was in a totally different scenario compared to his first few trips when there was no diplomatic or trade link between Beijing and Washington. More than three decades after his ice-breaking visit, Kissinger remains proud of what he did to "open" China."I consider that the single most important thing I did in government and the one that had the best permanent effect."Rice on vital visitUS Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will arrive in Beijing today amid the heated presidential campaign in her country and some disturbing developments in the Taiwan Straits.Rice has a very busy schedule in Beijing, holding talks with Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi today. LAS VEGAS -- Three men enslaved more than 20 members of a Chinese acrobatic team, feeding them little, paying them next to nothing to perform and confiscating their passports and visas, US authorities said. A woman who worked as an interpreter for China Star Acrobats escaped late last month and contacted authorities, the FBI said. She told police she and 20 teammates -- including five teens ages 14 to 17 -- were being held against their will. Social workers interviewed 14 of them Friday, according to a criminal complaint. "They literally hugged the investigators when they arrived," said FBI spokesman David Staretz. You Zhi Li, 38, Yang Shen, 21, and Jun Hu, 43, were arrested this week on slavery charges. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 13. The acrobats said Li promised them 0 (euro220) to ,600 (euro1,174) a month to perform with the China Star Acrobats, a team that traveled and performed at schools across the United States. "It's a cultural program," said Anthony Wright, Li's court-appointed defense attorney. "Chinese folks get to come over here and learn about America." Prosecutors said the acrobats were forced to stay in Li's home, where up to six lived in each bedroom. Most had been brought to Las Vegas months ago. The acrobats told authorities they were fed minimal amounts of instant noodles, rice and vegetables twice a day. They said they sometimes had to perform twice a day, were awakened early and did not get to sleep until very late. According to the complaint, Li confiscated visas and passports and told them their phone calls home would be monitored. One girl who performed as a contortionist told authorities she was being paid (euro36) a month, while a boy who said he had been traveling with the troupe for two years said he received 0 (euro73) per month. The acrobats are now being provided shelter, food and medical attention, said Terri Miller, director of the Anti-Trafficking League Against Slavery, a task force formed last year in the Las Vegas Valley.
